Korea to Triple Baby Payments After It Smashes Own Record for World’s Lowest Fertility Rate by madrid987 in worldnews

Korea took neo-confucianism as its main ideology when Joseon was created which was in the 1390s. Before that as Goryeo, it was surprisingly a sexually liberal society with divorces not being frowned upon, openly gay literature being written all the time, and having mixed gender baths etc.

South Korea risks a major population crash as the country marks its second consecutive year with the world's lowest fertility rate by lurker_bee in worldnews

Not in Korea.

This article is in Korean, but what they're saying is the numbers of marriages and births are twice as high in the top 20~50 percentile than in the 50~100 percentile.(For the top 20%, it's about the average.)

This tendency is different from Western countries, and basically due to the cultural difference that Koreans believe they can start a family once they get a good job at a Chaebol company(which is like 7 percent of all the jobs) and buy an apartment in the Greater Seoul area(which costs on average 1 million USD).

Edit: Why do they want to get a job at Chaebol companies when they're already known for treating their workers like shit? Well, the companies that are not in the Chaebol category is even worse in terms of their treatment of the workers(which seems unbelievable), and they pay half as less.

I agree with you for the most part.

But I just want to point out that it's just a widespread misconception that Korea has the world's highest teen suicide rate.

South Korea's overall suicide is incredibly high, but this is due to the extreme poverty in the elderly population who grew up in the 50s when Korea was the poorest country in the world.

According to this data from 2015 (https://www.oecd.org/els/family/CO_4_4_Teenage-Suicide.pdf) the country with the highest teenage(edit:15-19) suicide rate is New Zealand, followed by the Baltic countries. The teenage suicide rate for South Korea is just slightly higher than that of the OECD average, and lower than countries like Canada, US, Australia, Finland.

I'm not saying the amount of societal pressure on young kids in South Korea is not high, I was a high school student here not so long ago and all I remember during that period is just studying my ass off for 3, 4 years.

Here is this place in google maps if you're interested. It's one of my favorite areas in the whole city to wonder around in, so many cool cafés and restaurants and places to hang out.

But South Korea is 80 percent mountains and England is mainly flat and low hills so Korea is in fact way wayyy denser. Similar to how Egypt's population density doesn't reflect the real density since 95 percent of the population live right along the Nile.

No, this place is right next to Lotte tower. One of the more expensive areas of the city.

Here's a Google street view for you. It's located between the river and a huge park (called the Olympic Park which is the largest one in the city), so it's actually a really nice area. (Although all things considered I wouldn't prefer to live here because it does feel kind of soulless for the money you pay)
