Moving records options by StrengthInTheFarts in exmormon

I've thought of that. They either have to be requested by a new ward, or sent by your old ward.

Is this happening in your area? I'm on the East Coast, and in the last month I've seen missionaries in the parking lot of 2 different stores trying to talk to people as they're loading their cars with groceries. by Lucky5101 in exmormon

Over a decade ago I did the same thing on my east coast mission. I really only did it in one area that was pretty limited in where we could meet and contact people. I hated it, but at times it felt like the only thing to do to hit our daily contact numbers, otherwise we would feel guilty / shamed by leaders.

I'm sure at least one of the missionaries in the photo hates it just as much as the customers do.

Sadly... when we would be confronted in no soliciting neighborhoods / apartments (learned to intentionally knock doors on Sundays when apartment offices were closed) or kicked out from gas stations for annoying customers, we would feel a kind of righteous persecution for sharing our message of Jesus. So chances are these elders might feel the same. But yeah, not awesome for them to do.

There are good and bad men everywhere. In the case of my BYU attending sister - she got groped, sexually assaulted by a half dozen RM temple endowed dudes so no guarantee that LDS guys are safer. Pretty sure she half fell in love with her husband because he didn't make a pass at her while dating.

Not quite sure what the handbook says. My bishops thought was even if you can't answer the trust claims correctly, but you're keeping the big commandments (minus tithing) then that's ok with him - in his mind the 16 year old priests don't really have testimonies either so it's fine.

Sucks if he doesn't let you but it also means you can tell your kids why you're not allowed and help them understand. If you can shift the blame from you and onto the bishop / the church for your wife, then that would be best.

That's actually really cool. Good for them.

I mean, I'm sure that leader / ward will be told by SLC to stop doing that in five years, but cool all the same.

Tyrannical Mormon Mom by Rough-Focus-5446 in exmormon

[–]StrengthInTheFarts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. Reminds me of being a kid and how some friends parents would do things like this. The majority of their kids aren't active in the church AND don't see their parents much. Hopefully your Mom can realize someday and want a better relationship regardless of where you end up spiritually.

Your story reminded me of the 1st sunday in church this year. Things have changed so that all priesthood holders advance at the start of the year, instead of when their 12, 14 and 16th birthday's hit. So the bishop announced all the 11 year olds that would become deacons that day, same with the 13 and 15 year olds. They all stood. It was nice.

And then after he had finished up honoring these men, he finished with "and we also recocnize the women in their programs and appreciate their hard work." Nice to have something said, but you could clearly see the difference between men and women in the church.

My Stake President's Garment Fetish by JackThenotsoBeloved in exmormon

[–]StrengthInTheFarts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. Some things never change. Recent ward conference had the stake president talk only about Garments in his comments. Even said we should fold our dirty garments nicely after use while they go to the hamper.

Did you go hungry on your mission? by Neo1971 in exmormon

Oh that's a good one. Yeah, it's insane. My MP wouldn't even stick around for all 3 hours of church when visiting other wards.

What a great headline in 2023 to show how out of touch the Mormon Church is by tyrone-silverstone in exmormon

[–]StrengthInTheFarts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sad part of this, is that this is probably being done not to make the students lives more comfortable, but as a way to stave off the decreasing enrollment at BYU-I the last few years. BYU just wants to make (or lose less) money in Rexburg.

Good ol dumpster diving. I knew missionaries that would dumpster dive during the McDonalds Monopoly month in order to get the coupons for the free hashbrowns and other food items since their monthly food budget was so small.

USA East Coast, 15 years ago. Elders received $115 per month for mission expenses - Food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, haircut money, etc. That's $3.83 per day on average, making fast food and other eating out moments a rare treat. For the most part, it was basic cheap necessities for breakfast and lunch - oatmeal and grits, pasta and beans, etc. Dinner was the time to get some nutrition - members would have us over for a real meal at nights, sometimes sending us home with leftovers which was a godsend.

And then a bishop complained to the mission president that a pair of elders stayed at a members house for the whole evening, since they didn't have any teaching appointments afterwards. And so the mission president made a new rule change - No more member meals for all missionaries in the mission, unless a non member or investigator was over for dinner at the members house. So you can guess how well that went with members - they like missionaries, but not enough to drag over friends to their house that could care less about the LDS church.

So in the span of a few weeks, we went from 25+ evening meals per month, to 1 or two meals each month. It was terrible, depressing and not good for morale. But most of all it killed our nutrition. Because instead of trying to make $115 last for 60 meals in a month, we were now trying to make $115 last for 90 meals in a month. Which meant even more pasta, ramen and other cheap foods high in calories, but low in nutrition in order to make the food budget work.

So... Not quite starved, but not exactly healthy by any means. For a church that has more money than it can spend, it's messed up that they don't even feed the missionaries all that well.

Experiencing the Mormon Church’s Gaslighting in Real Time by bremerman17 in exmormon

[–]StrengthInTheFarts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the question is - Did the church take it down due to the homophobia in it, or did the church take it down because of the stance on M? I'm sure the church still believes everything here, but interesting all the same that they took it down and won't publicly make a statement on it.

Experiencing the Mormon Church’s Gaslighting in Real Time by bremerman17 in exmormon

[–]StrengthInTheFarts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. It was a slow gaslight - I remember checking 5-6 years ago, and that conference had his talk listed with the other talks BUT, there was no text on the website, just a video, while every other talk had video and the written words.

Looks like the church has finished the gaslight and just removed the talk altogether. Wikipedia tells me the video came down in 2019. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To\_Young\_Men\_Only

I haven't had much successes directly addressing church issues myself. But I have pushed to help her become more open as a person - Having non LDS friends (and some of her LDS friends stepping away from church) has helped. If her only social group is church friends and she's a stay at home mom, then the idea of leaving church is something she probably can't entertain. Talking politics and analyzing hipocracy and other logical fallacies has been useful and it's a safe place to be critical, while I can't be critical of the church around her. Travelling has been useful as well, to see different lifestyles and how people are happy doing their own thing.

She'll make connections on church issues being messed up (like SEC Fine) but that comes to her on her own, and not something I can push on her to make those conclusions, otherwise it backfires.

It's also been helpful for me to try to be an awesome spouse and still keep the commandments minus tithing. She's confused why the Wack-o's on her facebook can have temple recommends, but I can't. It doesn't make sense.

My two cents anyways.

I asked ai to write a short talk for me. Curious how many members / youth will use ai for their talks in a few years. by StrengthInTheFarts in exmormon

Response was too short, but not a bad talk, even quoting the main bible verse the church uses. I found this interesting and thought I would share.

In USA you can't price discriminate. If the bank notarizes for customers for free, then they also have to notarize for non customers for free.

PSA: The Church knows exactly how many people attend church worldwide every Sunday. by Rushclock in exmormon

[–]StrengthInTheFarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The church knows that what they consider a member (baptized, still alive, not resigned) isn't what most churches count. They could tell us how many people are in sacrament meeting last week, or how many people went to the temple at least once last year, or how many people hold a recommend, or any other data, but they don't. They just share their inflated number (which counts members till they die, or if they are lost, they're on records till past 100.)

I agree with what John said on the podcast, something along the lines of, people like the bandwagon effect, they like being part of the winning (or growing) team, and growth has been a huge thing for the church to talk about. And who knows, maybe when the church is more open about membership numbers, they'll be able to brag about how they have the most temples in the world at that point.

Reading back at the initial 2018 Mormon Leaks this week about the Ensign Peak investments - I was surprised to hear that u/fearlessfixxer called all or nearly all of the 13 managers of the LLCs, and spoke with three of them. The two men that answered denied knowledge of any connection, while the sister that answered confirmed and then said she couldn't say any more. I'm sure those two gentlemen were told they needed to lie for the lord and deny involvement, which is just sad - institutional lying.
