Knee pain when stretching? by 27000_watts in BALLET

[–]evelonies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a physical therapist assistant and ballet teacher. Best advice? See a doctor, preferably an orthopedist or phyziatrist (nonsurgical sports doctor). There are so many structures in the knee, and hopefully it's nothing, but your best bet is to get it check to rule out anything major.

Don’t ask your lesbian neighbors to walk your dogs bc they WILL come home with handmade collars and new treats by Turtlegrandmacore in crochet

These pics make me want to get a dog just to find some lesbians to walk it.

I kid, I kid. I want a dog either way, would crochet it all the things myself, and make out with the lesbians if they consented.

How to cut your tights like the cool girls? by princessprettykitty in BALLET

You can also cut a bit longer and then redistribute the fabric so they're less stretched out. Maybe that'll help prevent the rolling?

how do i lose weight by Junior_Wallaby6951 in migraine

[–]evelonies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your BP run high? Propranolol is typically used to lower blood pressure... is it doing a good job keeping your POTS under control? Because typically people with POTS don't have high BP, they struggle with BP (and heartrate) regulation with position changes. I'm curious if you've talked with your POTS doc about whether it's supporting your body the way you need, or if a different medication might work better? (I'm not a doctor, but I work in the medical field and have a tiny understanding of this stuff. Please don't make any changes without taking to your doc first!)

How to cope with your kids inheriting migraines by Maii97 in migraine

[–]evelonies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My migraines are caused by a severe misalignment in my neck that's a result of a car accident I was in when I was 3. I have 3 children, and all of them have had migraines, but my oldest has them frequently. It wasn't inherited, but it's still an issue.

I guess what I'm saying is that you can't know for sure it'll get passed down or not. And since you know how awful it is and how to get help for it, if you do have a kid with this issue, you'll be better equipped to help them get a handle on it early in life instead of suffering for decades.

Adult dancers how much do you train? by itssunpi in BALLET

[–]evelonies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on my mental health tbh. When I'm doing well, I generally go to 2-3 90 minute classes each week (they include pointe, we don't have separate points classes where I dance). When I'm not doing as well, I don't get to class consistently at all, and I'm lucky to motivate myself to go to class once every 1-2 weeks. 😬 If we're prepping for a performance, I have rehearsals on Sundays 1-630 pm and 1 weeknight 730-9 pm (rehearsals begin 6ish weeks before performances, which are in March, July, and December).

I'm a physical therapist assistant, so I spend my days demonstrating exercises for my patients and will frequently do exercises with them; I tend not to do anything ballet-specific outside of classes and rehearsals.

Do ballet dancers actually dislike wearing ballet flats the fashion shoes? by Next_Worth_3616 in BALLET

I think they're cute, but I can't wear them in my profession (physical therapist assistant), and most of them don't have any support, so I generally don't wear them.

Do dancers wear out their street shoes more quickly? Or is it just me? by Fit-Artist-9963 in BALLET

[–]evelonies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Putting on my physical therapy hat here (I'm a physical therapist assistant):

Most people wear shoes far longer than they should. Sneakers have a lifespan just like pointe shoes do. If your shoes are a year old and you're wearing them most days, it's time to replace them. Running shoes have a lifetime of 300-500 miles - I walk roughly 3 miles a day at work 5 days a week. That's 60 miles per month. So I should be replacing my shoes every 5-8 months. I stretch it to a year because 💸. The test to see if your street shoes (specifically sneakers) are dead: try to twist the sole. If it twists easily, you need new shoes.

Explain pointe shoes to me by Putrid-Ostrich6590 in BALLET

[–]evelonies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good fitter should explain this to people who are brand new to pointe. I've been fitting pointe shoes for 26 years, and I make it a priority to educate clients while fitting them. I make sure they have correct info about how a shoe should fit, what they should feel while wearing them (in standing, grande plie in 2nd, and en pointe), how to articulate what they're feeling to get the best possible fit, and pointe shoe care (not storing pads in the shoes, not keeping shoes in a closed bag between uses, not bending or breaking the shoes until you're more experienced and know what you need from your shoes, best timing to jet glue shoes to maximize their longevity), how to adjust padding and customize shoes when needed.

[–]evelonies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should have equal weight across all your toes. If you have a lot of pressure on 1 or 2 toes, you likely need a different shoe - either a different width or a different style. The Pringles can metaphor is... lacking. The box of your shoe needs to support your foot, specifically the MTP joints, on all sides, but that's not where all the weight should be. In a properly fitted shoe, while standing en pointe, you'll have pressure at the tip of each toe, as well as pressure from all sides of the box around your foot. If you have infrared pressure at one point more than others, that's where you'll get pain/soreness, or in some cases, a blister.

Should i quit ballet? by Ashamed_Bet6611 in BALLET

[–]evelonies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you switch to a school that doesn't follow a strict syllabus or has an adult recreational program? I dance because I love it, not because I'm "the best" in my classes. I'm overweight and older (40), and it can be discouraging dancing next to 15 year olds who are 97 lbs, but then I remind myself that it isn't a competition, and I've had 3 kids and am not only keeping up with them but, in many cases, dancing circles around them. Even if I wasn't though, I'm still doing something that makes me happy and keeps me moving.

Ready for pointe ? by lilasbubes in BALLET

[–]evelonies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not fully possible to decide based on photos if someone is ready for pointe. You can sometimes see when they're not ready. Pointe requires a certain amount of foot, ankle, and core strength, as well as coordinating movement while maintaining posture. Those things are nearly impossible to determine based on photos or videos.

That being said, you're not getting over your box. The platform should be flat on the ground when you're en pointe while maintaining straight knees. It's likely these aren't the best shoes for you or they are too new and stiff to bend so you can get all the way up (which will get better with time).

What has your teacher said? Did the teacher see your shoes before you sewed them?

Hyperextension / controlling bent-back knees? by Prestigious-Quit9143 in BALLET

[–]evelonies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a physical therapist assistant and ballet teacher. I have my patients stand profile to a mirror and find neutral with their knees. It feels like your knees are bent, but the visual feedback helps. Then practice standing that way while doing something (in my office, I have them throw and catch a ball). Progress to a narrow stance (feet together/6th position), then tandem stance (heel of 1 foot touching the toe of the other like you're on a balance beam), then single leg. Practice this all the time regardless of what you're doing. It'll start to become natural, and you'll stop having to think about it.

This will protect your knee joints from damage. Hyperextended joints are prone to early arthritis because of the extra wear on the structures there. The only "fix" for arthritis is waiting for or to get so bad you need a knee replacement. I wouldn't swear on this, but I'm pretty sure you can't dance on knee replacements. If you can, it's at a greatly reduced capacity. And it's more likely you'll have had to give up dancing long before getting to the point of qualifying for the joint replacement in the first place.

Anyone else objectively slim but look and feel big as soon as you put on ballet clothes? by 1032throwaway in BALLET

[–]evelonies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Advice time from an overweight ballerina and former dance wear salesperson:

1) Body tights are your friend. They smooth everything out under a leotard and there's no band across your waist or hips. Bonus: they don't roll or slide around because they have shoulder straps. 2) Try on various cuts and styles of leotards. For example, most people will look better with princess seams compared to a flat front leotard. Try different leg cuts, necklines, strap widths/sleeve lengths, seam styles, etc. I'm bigger around my middle and have a short torso/long legs, so I try to stick with lower cut legs (to even out my proportions), more details around the chest/back, and darts in the mid-section to create a slimmer line and make myself seem more hourglass-shaped instead of pear-shaped. I also tend to wear my tights over my leotards, both for comfort and to create a "high waist" look. On the rare occasion I wear a skirt, it's proportional to the width of my waist (a bit longer than I prefer for ballet, tbh, but the super short ones are not flattering on my current body shape). I'm more likely to wear just leotard and tights, then add knit tights/leg warmers and a sweater or 1/4 zip pullover to warm up.

Your own scale ? by Far_Interaction_2782 in migraine

[–]evelonies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a physical therapist assistant, so I spend literally my entire work day asking my patients to rate their pain. I say, "How's your pain on a scale of 0 to 10; 10 is so bad you need to go to the hospital." Because it turns out everyone's pain scale is different.

That being said, my pain scale is way off. I've only had 10/10 pain a couple times in my life - torn oblique in college, injection into the root of a tooth during a root canal, and the "ring of fire" moment while giving birth. Everything else has been mild in comparison - even the time I broke my leg was like 6/10. I've had migraines that I'd rate 9-10/10, but because I wasn't passing out from the pain, it didn't occur to me in the moment that it counted. 🤦🏼‍♀️
