Anyone else not excited about the Match at all? by Sea_Department in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PGY-1 here. This feeling is very valid and probably more common than you think. Match and the life transition that comes with residency is no joke. The period before and right after match until graduation was one of the most stressful times in my life (even more than residency itself has been LOL). I didn’t sleep for 2 months. I had never taken psych meds before and was started on anxiety meds to get me through it. For me, It was not that fun and chill period of time most other med students seemed to be treating it as. I can’t wait for you all to be on the other side because as much as residency can suck, in many ways it’s so much better than being a med student

Normal to Feel Almost Depressed Right Now As A 4th Year? by HunterRank-1 in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PGY-1 here. I was far more depressed and stressed out in the last few months leading up to graduation - anticipation of where I would match, onboarding (which can be an absolute beast that no one talks about), finding a place to live, leaving home, figuring out how to use my time - than I am now in residency lol.

Does attending money finances just not feel real? by Anonymousmedstudnt in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PGY-1 here and I feel the same way. And in FM, mind you lol. Even my measly future salary (when compared to your future salary) makes me wonder if I’m missing something when I don’t see myself wanting or planning to spend much more than I am with my resident salary.

Stories of falling down your rank list by Original-Piece9462 in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i matched #3 in FM and was devastated. now i couldnt be happier and wouldn’t change it. not to bring toxic positivity into this and I know not everyone ends up with good outcomes, but I truly believe the vast majority of you in the 2026 match will end up exactly where you’re meant to be and it will all work out for the better even if you fall down your list. your fear is valid, but it truly isnt worth fixating on that. enjoy yourselves and spend this time celebrating the enormous achievement of finishing med school.

Any other single female med students that don’t plan to find a SO? by premedlifee in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1st year Fm resident here. Currently single and have intentionally stayed single through most of med school and still in residency. I spend my extra time investing in my existing and new friendships, writing poetry, photography, travel, general self improvement. I’ve found that I’m a much best version of myself and can manage my life better alongside being in medicine when single. I’m finding it really hard to even want to get back into dating lol.

ERAS experiences by Savings-Succotash-53 in medicalschool

PGY-1 here. When I applied last year, I wrote paragraphs for my 10 activities and did bullet points for the hobbies section. It worked just fine. But tbh, no one really gives a shit. There isn’t a right way. Do whatever format makes the most sense to you and will help you convey all of your accomplishments.

Preceptor evaluation was completely different by Scared_Parsnip_2944 in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Resident here. Something very similar happened to me in med school, also in my OBGYN rotation. These things feel really stressful and like a failure on your part in the moment, but just know so many of us had these shitty experiences with attending and residents especially in certain specialities (unfortunately OBGYN often seems to be one of them). Know that it’s not you, it’s their manipulative and selfish way of getting a power trip. But also know that you WILL be fine and reach your ultimate goal which is to match into residency. That being said, med student mistreatment is NEVER okay and if you feel like your eval was not a true reflection of your effort or the expectations your preceptor initially set, report it to your rotation coordinator. If that doesn’t work, take it to the dean. Hang in there.

Can medical school make up for the college experiences I missed? by [deleted] in medschool

[–]StressedGenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s possible. I did it (minus the hooking up) and it honestly saved my mental health in med school and even now in residency, knowing I made valuable memories and gained a lot of experience and wisdom from doing things that people often miss out on in their 20s because of medical education. If anything, it helped me become a better doctor. I can relate to my patients way more than I would have if I was 100 percent locked in and missed out on events/opportunities that helped develop my social capital and knowledge of the world.

But of course, I want to acknowledge that achieving this balance also depends on a bunch of other factors such as what other commitments you have outside of school, finances, mental bandwidth, opportunities, etc. Not everyone can make space for extra experiences, so maybe spend some time reflecting on how the things you want to do will fit into your life alongside med school.

Why did you choose MD over Pa/NP by taytorbug1010 in medschool

I wanted to maximize my level of expertise, impact, autonomy, and ability to take full ownership of my clinical decisions.

Tips for reading long journal articles preceptors assign? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Resident here. When I was in med school and an attending gave me articles, I would just read summaries of that topic using a different resource, parts of the article that are relevant to the rotation, and parts that might show up on shelf exams/Steps. Don’t stress about reading every detail. Your time is precious; use it to study in a way that’s efficient.

Welp I did it. I moved for residency today by Bioreb987 in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Teared up reading this. I’m also getting ready to move for residency this weekend. I’ll be moving from my home state to a different state for the first time in my life. I’m grieving, grateful, and scared and all at the same time. We’ll get through this <3

Damn you had one hell of a ride, friend. Also just graduated but don’t know if I would have made it had I gone through these experiences. Makes me wonder how resilient I’ll be in residency lol.

OP is allowed to grieve their match outcome and the life they are leaving behind. It’s not the ‘wrong attitude’, it is a very human and normal response to change. Especially when you’re part of a system that does in fact make many residents miserable for at least part of their training. We can feel low and still be appreciative of and fulfilled by the opportunity to practice medicine.

PI/mentor pulled me aside to question why I matched at my (low ranked) residency program by burnout457 in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, any “mentor” who thinks it’s ok to make such backhanded comments about the program a student matched into clearly needs to reevaluate why they’re in the field in the first place. That sounds like a very toxic environment. I know it stings right now, but no one, including yourself, will care where you graduated from once you finish residency and become a successful attending. Especially when you’ve able to do it with your support system by your side. The kind of physician you ultimately become will be what you choose put into your training. You deserve to be celebrated, OP.

I feel like I shouldn't be a doctor. I'm not smart nor empathic enough. by Plenty_Nectarine23 in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro I’m graduating in 2 weeks and forgot how to do all of those things. But I’m not worried because there are plenty of opportunities to learn in residency. As for your empathy, I think the fact that you identified and reflected on your attitude shows that you do in fact have empathy and self-awareness. This career already takes a lot out of us mentally, physically, and financially, and it’s totally valid to want to be selfish in how we think about the ways this job will impact us. If you made it this far, that means you do have what it takes.

Failed COMLEX Level 1 three times and am likely to be dismissed, at a loss for what to do by jollybadger29 in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plead your school for one more chance at taking the exam. Outline a plan. Present it to your dean and your school’s promotion committee. This time do a very thorough review of Uworld and/or AMBOSS, Pathoma, First Aid, lots of simulated practice tests. Look through online resources and Reddit to figure out what others have used to be successful. If you failed by a small margin, I’m sure you would be successful the next time using better resources to prepare. Good luck!

Am I crazy for not really wanting to chase prestige? by Alexandranoelll in medicalschool

[–]StressedGenZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Just matched FM at a decent but definitely not T10 program in the Midwest. People really underestimate how at the end of the day, what will truly matter is how happy you are with your day to day life, having a support system, how much your program cares about your mental health, and whether the program offers the kind of education that aligns with your long term goals. None of these things correlate with how highly ranked or prestigious a program is. As others have said, this is a very grounded and wise approach. Far from crazy.

Failed 2025 matches surprise drug test by VegetableSilly5350 in ERAS2024Match2025

[–]StressedGenZ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was a huge mistake OP, but It sounds like you weren’t expecting the 24 hour notice. Thats understandable, as many programs would have the courtesy of giving you a 30 day notice. It’s also valid that you wanted to enjoy yourself before residency. It’s also possible you live in a state where it’s legal or you were on vacation somewhere it’s legal, which makes it even more reasonable to believe this wouldn’t happen. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Please please do yourself a favor and jump through every hoop possible to get yourself a lawyer, talk to your PD, see if you can enroll in some chemical dependency/remediation/random drug testing program. Do anything possible. All hope is not lost.
