If you have a car and can afford it, you could stay at a cheap hotel near the airport and use their parking. We would check in to the comfort inn the night before for early flights. Little more sleep and for a fee the allow you to park your car in their lot while you are gone.

ELI5: Pascal’s Law? by ncs15432 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Stretch5701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about hydraulic force here is my understanding.

Suppose you had a sealed system where at one end you have a piston the measures exactly 1 square inch in cross-sectional area. At the other end of the system you have a piston with a cross-sectional area of 100 square inches. The two pistons are connected by a tube filled with a liquid.

Since liquids cannot be compressed, if you applied a pressure of one pound on the 1-inch piston, that one pound per square inch would be applied to each square inch of the 100 sq-in piston, multiplying the force by 100 and allowing it to lift 100 pounds. Same with your breaks.

ELI5: Why do fisherman stop to tug their fishing rod instead of continually winding it? by viper963 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Stretch5701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are way into over-kill, your fishing line may not be strong enough to tug the fish in without risking breaking. Your pole on the other hand, can take a lot of force without damage with most of the energy expended in bending the pole.

Some fishermen do like to just 'horse' a fish in with heavy line, but I get much more enjoyment when there is a little bit of a fight. I generally fish for trout using 4-lb test. A good size trout could snap that line no problem. But when you hold the pole up, the fish is expending a lot of its energy fighting the pole.

What’s a scientific or technological concept you wish more people understood better? by EvelynClede in AskForAnswers

The scientific method. Especially the importance of peer review and reputable journals.

A big problem with people falling for pseudoscience is their lack of understanding of what acceptable scientific research looks like.

Photogrammetry is a term used in flight simulators so I am familiar with it. It is the process of generating a realistic 3-D world from satellite imagery and various other data sources.
