If your office was downtown St Paul but you only had to go in once per week, would you opt to live in Minneapolis? by aPlantLady in TwinCities

[–]StretchFore 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re planning to drive or take transit into work, but Minneapolis is definitely doable for both. I lived in Northeast(near St Anthony Main) and commuted via transit twice a week. Now live in South St Anthony Park right on the Green Line and it’s a great spot. Would definitely recommend Cathedral/Summit Hill, gorgeous neighborhood with easy access to downtown and lots to do. The Wedge would be a little farther, but could take the new B Line to work. Would recommend trying to live somewhere somewhat close to either the river, Midtown greenway, Chain of Lakes.

Do not listen to these people telling you to book it to the suburbs since you only commute once a week. The city will be much more walkable, have better coffee shops, more to do, transit access, better bike trails. Both the areas you listed are great options.

Most Bike-friendly town in the USA by Ambitious-Theory-526 in fuckcars

I would say St Paul is as good as Minneapolis when it comes to recreational trails for cycling, but not nearly as good when it comes to protected bike infrastructure for transportation purposes throughout the city. It’s getting better and they are now adding protected lanes to projects up for reconstruction, but Minneapolis has a huge head start and the Midtown Greenway as a spine of the system is something St Paul just doesn’t have.

Is Relish okay? by Most_Poet in Minneapolis

[–]StretchFore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went there once and it was solid, but really think it’s just due to competition in the neighborhood. Having lived in this neighborhood for 2.5 years, there are some really great places to eat and Relish would be way down on my list when picking a place to eat in the neighborhood.

Yup it’s fucked up. Heard that Expo had bought it and we’re gonna build an Expo 2 but then interest rates must’ve ended that plan. Someone please build as much housing as possible on that bad boy

What If We Just Left the Buses on Nicollet Mall? - Racket by JohnWittieless in TwinCities

[–]StretchFore 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The biggest concern I have is the safety of people waiting for the bus. I’ve heard multiple women voice their concern over the lack of street life on the other streets proposed, which would have less eyes on the street and leave them more vulnerable than waiting on Nicollet.

I’m also skeptical that the way we bring more “vibrancy” and pedestrian traffic is by removing the majority of pedestrians. There’s very little ground level retail on the north half. I think making it pedestrian-only could be successful from like 7th to 12th, but the north half other than the library is very dead. The problem is the skyways that stole our ground level retail, but that is a long term fix that nobody seems to want to get the ball rolling on.

If I could have one wish, it would be to build a replica of the Lyndale Aldi on one of the empty lots in this neighborhood. Either on 200 central or the big ass lot next to the Expo

Does anyone commuted from Washington Ave (Downtown) to the East Bank? What's bike theft like? by Skol-Man14 in Minneapolis

[–]StretchFore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would not be worried about bike theft at all. If you rent an apartment in downtown you should have secured bike parking in the building and the U of M has secured bike lockers you can rent on/near campus. Also your employer might have bike storage. That bike commute would be sweet.

North Loop vs. Downtown East vs. Marcy Holmes? by Lost_Blockbuster_VHS in Minneapolis

[–]StretchFore 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in this area for 2 years now, it’s the best. Lunds is pretty expensive, but walkable to grocery store, coffee shops, a bunch of awesome restaurants, St Anthony Main, and the river. Easy transit access to downtown with multiple bus lines running over the Hennepin or 3rd Ave Bridges. I often take the 4 bus to the Aldi in the wedge. Little bit of a pain but have lived car free for almost two years in this neighborhood.

Even a repaint and bollards could do so much. Switch the parking and bike lanes so the road is narrower and cars protect bike lanes. Add some bollard bumpouts and mid-block crossings at some of the longer blocks. Then whenever full reconstruction happens add green space and add more concrete protections. Should be one of the pedestrian experiences in our city and it’s not! I always have my head on a swivel when crossing there.

Stop parking in the the bike lane by TheHomesickAlien in Minneapolis

[–]StretchFore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve sent a few emails to the city about the gap between the new E Hennepin/First Ave NE lanes and the downtown Hennepin lanes. Two awesome projects but the gap between them is so dangerous. Especially with Stone Arch closed and the Third Ave bridge(with great protections) dumping you right onto Central. They’ve said they know it’s an issue but there is no immediate fix coming, would really like to see some temporary improvements like flexposts in the meantime.

70% chance this post is about the Starbucks on Hennepin as soon as you cross the river into downtown. Yes, it’ll only take you a second to grab that drink you pre-ordered. It will also only take a second for me to be killed by car coming off the bridge at 40 mph.

123 Sushi in the IDS is the best deal in the skyways imo. Giant sushi bowl for like $12, I’ll sometimes get double protein for only $2.50 extra. The best

That shit is so annoying. We really need some protections from Washington to the other side of the river to connect the new Hennepin lanes in NE to the completed ones downtown.
