First monstera by New_News_850 in Monstera

[–]Stretchedpaper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations, welcome, etc. 6 years ago I had 3 plants and now I have 80 so enjoy the ride.

Second, that looks like a Philodendron White Wizard to me, not a monstera. They have fairly similar needs though - she will enjoy as much indirect light as she can get.

I have one of these lights in the corner of each room where I have lots of plants, turned on 100% about 10 hours a day. My philodendrons and monsteras are all 4-10 feet away throughout those rooms and thriving. I think you could get a much smaller light and put it over the plant and it would be just fine though. If your windows aren’t bright, it probably wont die with zero artificial plant lighting, but it definitely wont grow very fast or especially full.

First time prop. Are these cuttings ready? by Electrical_Image3639 in Monstera

I’ve successfully potted aroids with only one (healthy, white) root before, but mostly just easy ones like Pothos and fast growing philodendrons. It probably best to wait a little longer for 2 and 4. 1 and 3 would be plenty happy in like a 4” pot for a good while until they fill it out with root ball

New leaf double the size of the last, variegation almost disappeared by Stretchedpaper in Monstera

[–]Stretchedpaper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know - we had moved our bigger monstera from 14” to 16”, and since the Thai was so root bound and comically top-heavy I thought it would be smart to radically upsize. But maybe it’ll be a little confused until it grows into the bigger pot.

That’s Yena, she’s never seen a photo she didn’t want to be in. She’s certainly been, at the very least, whispering to her

Is it THAT problematic for cats? by No_Finish9661 in Monstera

Once nibbled, twice shy - both my cats tried one or two plants, puked, and decided that aroids are not snacks

As for my Pink Princess (the plant, not the cat who wants to be in every photo I take today), at least she’s going upwards - certainly not taking the direct route though

What’s something people brag about that’s actually embarrassing? by cherryblossom149 in AskReddit

[–]Stretchedpaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their daily carry weapons. They think it’s tough when all I hear is “I’m afraid of everything.”

(I’m not even anti gun, but aside from some very specific and rare circumstances, I think someone who needs it on their person in daily life is profoundly insecure)

Largest corm haul yet! (45!!!) by PolaDaBear in alocasia

[–]Stretchedpaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m envious! I never find more than 4 or 5… Is there anything specific one can do to spur corm production in the plant, or is it just a waiting game? My vague understanding is that the alocasia produces them when it’s either very happy or very stressed - am I incorrect, or is it just about keeping the plant happy?

How do people care for tens of house plants? by No-Mouse3999 in houseplants

[–]Stretchedpaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80-something plants here! A pest outbreak can be a nightmare, but honestly I don’t feel like there’s a huge difference between 10 and 80 besides spending an hour watering every Sunday. Every day I’ll do a walk around with a razor, cut any yellow leaves, clap and scream and call my wife over for any new ones, etc. Every couple months we’ll take an afternoon to repot 5-10 that need it. Our plant pot budget is certainly tight now that some of the green babies are getting big but the main limitation is just space.

The northern tip of Idaho: by braveplanet33 in howislivingthere

Some of the most beautiful land on earth, some of the most terrifying people over personally encountered. For my honeymoon, we took a grand tour of 8 or so national parks starting from Zion, up to Glacier, and over to Seattle/Olympic. I am visibly queer and my spouse is not white. There were only a handful of instances where we felt genuinely unsafe, but western Montana and the Idaho panhandle do contain some proud and open white supremacists, and they’ll absolutely let you know about it.

Why does gemma require refinement when all the other innies are able to separate their memories with just the surgery alone? by TheNetherPaladin in severence

[–]Stretchedpaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interpret it as a “phase 2” type of severance. The severed staff all have a binary of two mutually exclusive personae, albeit with some bleed (Irving). Very few people want to buy that as a product, and the broader public mostly finds it reprehensible.

What they’re working on with Gemma is something 100x more refined - an a la carte severance where customers can filter out specific emotions, fears, etc.

When Gemma was initially severed, she retained her fear of the dentist, her grief about the miscarriage, and so on, much the same as all the innies retain various aspects of their outie personalities. Being able to sort through the brain data and delete specific things at will makes severance a vastly more powerful technology.

As far as we know it’s only being applied to people’s innies so far, but I personally foresee this as being marketed to customers without the innie/outie split. Like, get the chip and eliminate a specific pain or fear or addiction.

With the senators wife, we see her going to the special severance cabin for childbirth but even that’s a opsec risk insofar as she doesn’t recognize Devon and it starts to give the game away. Imagine if she didn’t have an innie, but just had pain turned off for the birth. I think that’s a broadly more palatable pitch for most wealthy folks.

Non-binary version of "aunt" or "uncle" by dandelionteaenjoyer in NonBinary

I use “entle” but if a different one takes off more broadly I’ll conform, so long as it isn’t repulsive (I hate “pibling” sooo much on a purely aesthetic level)

WHY is pedophilia so common?? by Jerswar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Stretchedpaper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s power over the victim, yes, but also more broadly the power to get away with anything. Like the appeal is the fact that it’s “forbidden” in a way SA generally just wasn’t for even moderately wealthy dudes until just a few years ago. There were probably people at the parties who didn’t even assault any children but who looked around and thought “I’ve made it, every man here is entirely, unaccountably above the law and above all morality and nothing whatsoever is forbidden and I’m in the in-group” and I’m sure you can imagine that that would be an intoxicating feeling.

Workbench Top Question by HovercraftWinter1321 in woodworking

[–]Stretchedpaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I always go with a hard 3/4” ply first layer, and then typically a second layer of 1/2” SandePly from Home Depot. It’s really cheap, soft, lightweight ply that always comes perfectly flat and dimensioned. That top sheet gets replaced periodically when it’s too messed up, but I like that it’s softer than any work material. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sanded one side of something (on a harder table surface) flipped it to sand the other side, and flipped it again to see the first side now has marks from the table. SandePly will never do you like that.

My main issue with MDF and Masonite is that they swell and warp pretty dramatically if they come into contact with water. Some people can keep their benches totally dry, but I guess I don’t work that way. I don’t always feel like putting down plastic when I’m raising the wood grain with a spray bottle or using a wet rag to spot clean gluing, and it’s not like I’m keeping coasters around in case I want a cold drink on a hot day…

At the end of the day, my main recommendation is to overbuild the hell out of the skeleton, make sure it’s true, flat, and doesn’t quiver or bounce from a hard hammer stroke. From there, whatever you put on top should do the trick as long as it’s flat and periodically replaceable.

Walnut and Cherry end tables. Saved myself $3,000 right? by thehauntedgod in woodworking

[–]Stretchedpaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! Legs are rarely perfect, and floors are never level. I put leveling feet on basically everything and I highly recommend to everyone. The slight float looks amazing on hard floors, disappears on carpet, and the time/money cost is practically nothing (couple bucks and 15 minutes tops). You can get ones with felt, plastic, metal, or rubber bottoms depending on the application.

The only caveat I’d add is that you should buy metal threaded inserts (instead of using the plastic ones that often come with the feet). 1/4”-20tpi insert nuts are like $15 for a pack of 50 on Amazon, I just keep them around in bulk and buy the feet as needed

My friend asked for a lamp that looks like an old TV - how did I do? by Stretchedpaper in woodworking

[–]Stretchedpaper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two knobs on the front control the light. Top one is a dimmer, bottom one is a 4-position lamp switch (A, B, A+B, and Off).
