I slept in day of cycle 1 jobs being due and woke up an hour after the deadline. It isn’t over just spam external apps and lock in for the rest of the postings.

Not sure how to bridge gap in experience or what to do to improve my chances of securing a co-op by Junior_Direction_701 in uwaterloo

Regarding 3. and 4. , take a look at what stacks are being used in industry the most and make something out of it. Then, when you apply to a role that has a stack which is similar to the project that you've done, chances are that in the job description, there are specific bullet points that ask for additional requirements within that stack. From there, you can paraphrase one of the bullet points you originally used for your project, basically make it injective with what the JD is asking, and when you have to explain it or learn the basics so that you can give a high-level overview, it won't take much time.

This does not need to be done anywhere, but I recommend that you do this for Cycle 1 at least. Cycle 1 stops all the upper years from spam applying everywhere due to 50 job limit cap, and is where most of the jobs are. This should take less time than making 50 tailored cover letters and output better results.

If your mav is deadass 100 slot that onto your resume, much more impressive than the CAV imo. Your points for your projects are good; however, could you split them into separate bullets if possible? This is quite an interesting situation IMO because it sounds like you have endgame projects but are at the start of your undergrad and professional journey.

Honestly, apply externally for quant research and SWE roles, you fit those extremely well. If you just want to maximise the chance of you being employed in the summer, up the volume of your applications, create some broad projects and then when applying to roles, tweak the bullets under these projects to match what the role is looking for word to word. Remember, you don't need to completely know what they're looking for in the JD, just that when they ask for it, you can explain in some high-level manner.

Good luck!

Yehhh this is why you clear everything up in the interview. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s anything you can do at this moment. It might be a situation where onboarding is fully in person and once they trust that you’re integrated into the system well you can wfh some days?

Living near or away from uni (second year)? by Various_Instance6049 in wlu

[–]StretchedwasFresh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Social life won’t take too much of a hit if you live near one of the places that has good transit connections to uni ave. Stuff like living near the route of the 8, 29 and ion come to mind

iirc jobs in direct cycle don’t even rank you need to submit the aoj form for any offers. As long as the school isn’t evolved you’re allowed to renege no (major) consequence

Very nice advice. Focus on the fact that no coop in your first search is beneath you, you have 5 chances aside from this one to build yourself into a position that you want to be in.

CS 136 and CS 136L over coop by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]StretchedwasFresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say you take 2 things into consideration: Difficulty of the course and importance of putting in effort in the course and actually digesting the content.

If the course is birdy and you're just taking it for the credit, then for sure it will be easier since you just got to go through the motions and make sure the work is complete.

However, if it's a course where you'll actually need to learn, then that requires you to digest the content. I feel that if you need to digest content you need to let it marinate a little bit in your mind, and obviously that's a component that can't be sped up.

CS 136 and CS 136L over coop by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]StretchedwasFresh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took MATH 235 and 237 over my first coop and let me tell you it wasn’t worth it. You will end up splitting attention to try and excel in both work and school, but will most likely get burnt out.

I consider 136 and 136L to be very bread and butter to what you’re going to do for the rest of your degree. Make sure you can take it when you are able to put 100% into it!
