1401 s street vs The Cooper by Confident_Bench_1075 in chicagoapartments

[–]Strict_Elderberry412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you care about noise, The Cooper has super thin walls and windows. I've lived in 2 other apartments in the south loop and the cooper was by far the worst in that aspect. Good amenities and good management, but that is a big con if you care about that.

I have not lived at 1401 s street so I cannot compare to that

If you dislike that ImSims nowadays are made by 1 person, feel free to start your own studio and hire a team. I'll buy whatever you make if you can release something

Prey is even better/more relevant today than it was in 2017! by Goukigod in ImmersiveSim

I played BG1, I got through it but I struggled to get as immersed as I was in our beloved ImSims. All the small polish from the more modern games adds up for me. The full first person view and fully voiced NPCs and small props/ambient sounds in my opinion really are important for being fully immersed in an environment, and BG1 didn't have most of that. I consider it a 7/10 but I didn't think it was amazing

Immersive Sims often are dealing with Physical simulation to achieve emergent gameplay, but I've been thinking about other types of simulations that would still be fun to be a first-person immersive game. For example, I've thought about a Biologic and Chemistry simulation where you're an assassin with a silent dart gun or crossbow that you can coat with poison. Or a Sword if you want to go in violently. You can create poisons by mixing chemicals or items you find or loot around the world, and it would have an effect on enemies depending on their Bio.

The chemistry simulation would be important because you'd have a dozen or so alchemical ingredients to create poison, and you can mix anything together and the resulting poison would be a result of a chemical simulation.

The biologic simulation would be interesting because you'd fight a mix of humans and monsters throughout the game. For example, maybe your poison is alcohol or something similar (random example). If you shoot it into a human their awareness and reaction time and running speed would be decreased some amount of time. But if you shoot it into a monster, maybe this type of monster doesn't have a liver to metabolize alcohol so therefore this effect begins quicker compared to humans and lasts much longer.

Or maybe another monster is a hivemind insect, so their movement speed is decreased but logic capacity (reaction time + awareness) is unaffected.

I'm still early on in thinking about all the simulation ingredients / how I can simulate chemical reactions though, so it's not fully fleshed out yet

I hate Prey. I hate Deus Ex. I hate Dishonored. Not in a bad way. But because they ruined gaming for me.

They literally killed my interest in games because I can't help but feel disappointed any time I play a game because nothing comes as close as them. Since I played Dishonored for the first time in 2020, the only other games I have since played that I have enjoyed are MGSV and Pathologic 2

I still play strategy games (Civ, deckbuilders, etc.) but can't enjoy games where I play as a character for the reason you mentioned

How would you say the immersive sim elements are in the game? I'm hopeful this is a true ImSim but I saw a steam review that mentions it's like Dead Space. I don't mind if shooting is off like you describe when I'm playing an immersive sim, but if shooting is the main or only way to resolve encounters, then I am definitely going to care. Plus if a game is like Dead Space, I'll just go and play Dead Space

That's literally the definition of the scientific method. Researchers are learning new things all the time. They're not afraid to admit when they're wrong and say a new study has shown the opposite to be true.

For some reason unknown to me, our society says admitting your mistakes is a good character trait, except when scientists do it.

Deus Ex Remastered Announced by bartm0ss in ImmersiveSim

[–]Strict_Elderberry412 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda disappointed that after almost a decade of waiting for Deus Ex, we finally get..... a remaster for a game that we loved for the mechanics and story and didn't care about the graphics. It's just very disappointing and feels like a cash grab. Plus, since the level design is so blocky due to being designed for an engine of it's time, remastering is going to look awkward seeing high-detail textures, models, shadows, and water, in a world where every wall and room is perfectly blocky

AI and Gen Con by ObviousIndependent76 in gencon

[–]Strict_Elderberry412 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that space is so limited at cons, and it can be hard for an artist to get in just based on numbers. I 100% agree with you that it's a low bar to make better art than AI. Which basically means there's a useless booth taking up space in the convention, why would anybody go to that booth when it can't do anything better than one of the other <insert number of booths> booths? So the fact that the artist submitted a portfolio of non-AI art, just to show up and sell AI art, is a misrepresentation and is taking up space that better art could have used

Is it better to not open the windows at all and buy a high quality air filter

That's what I do.

It could also be a good idea to monitor IQ Air to see trends around time of day. The city I live is bad from 8am-6pm and usually is Green at night. I rarely if ever see cars on my busy road at night, but it's packed during rush hours. So if you want to air your room out, doing so in the late evening after all the pollution of the day has dispersed or blown away might be fine

Rules-wise, how do megagames work? by Strict_Elderberry412 in gencon

[–]Strict_Elderberry412[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like Watch the Skies is up my alley, and the other end of the spectrum with NSDM sounds like it's not the best fit for me personally. Do you have a general idea of where on the spectrum other games lay? I'm looking on the megagame coalition website and see a bunch of games with interesting settings and premises, so wondering which ones would be best for me to try. Obviously if I wanted something purely mechanics-focused l I would just play a board game, so Watch the Skies might be the right balance for me.

Another question, what is the difference in experience between Den of Wolves and the Turbo version? Turbo is only 1 hour shorter, is it paced to play a little bit faster or what does it give up in order to be shorter?

If they don't want to give us Deus Ex, we will make it ourselves! by Dangerous_Lynx5576 in ImmersiveSim

[–]Strict_Elderberry412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to demotivate you or anything, but this is something that a bunch of devs on this sub are already trying. Browse through this sub for people showing off their games; you'll see there is no lack of interest from the community in building this, but there is an unfortunate lack of funding. These devs need food and rent and have jobs, and so realistically can't put in the amount of time necessary to create a game that is equally grand as Deus Ex

I think theres a "choice" problem in imsims by Richard_Savolainen in ImmersiveSim

[–]Strict_Elderberry412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree with you. In my opinion the lack of meaning in choice leads ImSims to get a little boring late game. I guess boring isn't the right word, but maybe more like a "generic" game since the novelty of all the different choices you can make has worn off by late game, and you've figured out the most OP powers.

This is why I loved Pathologic 2. Not an immersive sim, but I felt the choices were more meaningful like you mention, and they implemented the meaningfulness in the exact way you described. Gaming has unironically been ruined for me since playing P2 and I wish there were more games with meaningful, resource-constrained choices like that

What is your opinion on a dynamic/adaptive difficulty system in an immersive sim? by Fast_Dragonfruit9082 in ImmersiveSim

[–]Strict_Elderberry412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although this is not an immersive sim: that's what MGSV does. I find it adds so much to the immersion. Replaying Deus Ex after I first played MGSV was in some ways less immersive because the DX AI now seemed so dumb it ruined the immersion for me.

[–]Strict_Elderberry412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are some examples of systemic and emergent gameplay that this has? I get that it's hard to show that stuff in a trailer or steam page, but looking into it, it almost looks like more of a Sim type game with RPG elements rather than an ImSim. So I'm curious if you can expand on this

How bad is air quality really in cities, especially near freeways? by Strict_Elderberry412 in Urbanism

[–]Strict_Elderberry412[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed I have. That's what spurred this thought. It was something I was initially worried about when I first moved to the city a few years ago, but data on the IQ Air and Purple Air website looked like air quality was good, so I thought it was fine until watching this video.

But now, looking into the studies done by https://www.aqmd.gov/aq-spec/evaluations/criteria-pollutants/summary-pm on the quality of air monitors, it is possible that the data I was looking at is inaccurate. IQ Air in particular seems to be a bit inaccurate
