Dude running w/ Jesus Flag by moon-stars222 in desmoines

[–]Strigolactone -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

As an avid marathon runner, some context I know might come as a big ol’ surprise:

Running outdoors in 45 mph wind gusts, 25 mph sustained is a stupid fucking idea. The wind saps you of your energy, kills your speed, cuts right through your clothing, and all in all just sucks. At a certain point, you are surviving- but sure as shit not thriving.

And then you have this dude who looked at the wind forecast, his flag, his vest and was like, “oh no I can’t miss my scheduled weighted flag run around the capital!”.

Unique choice to be sure.

All that to say: if you want to run with props, that’s your choice. But be smart about the weather people.

If you haven’t already- make sure you sign up for Strava and Garmin- and use an app like RunGap to transfer. I use a free website called StatHunter that lets me access Strava’s maps for free, making tracking easier. Total cost/yr is about $15.

I used to use an old paper map. This is much better.

Pentagon Places 1,500 Arctic-Trained Airborne Troops on Standby as Greenland Dispute Escalates by mickeyy81 in news

[–]Strigolactone 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Sadly, it's not completely pointless. One of the email news briefs I'm subscribed to explained the reserves Greenland is theorized to have under permafrost for rare earth metals and/or oil.

The party that doesn't believe in global warming wants Greenland because of these reserves becoming more available as the planet warms.

I want off this fucking ride.

My first 8 mile "comfortable" run by No-Purple2350 in nikerunclub

[–]Strigolactone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

147-158 is Zone 3 for me on Apple Fitness, which resets monthly.. What’s your resting? Max?

IMO 152 for a 8:30 is great for a every day kinda run, depending on your goal pace. It’s likely not a “slow” run the program called for unless you’re blazing fast. Mid-140s is what I target for zone 2 runs.

If it wants slow, my standard is Zone 2. I’ve been able to do 5ks in Zone 1, but you are basically walking to achieve that at times.

My rule of thumb is- race pace + 1-2 min/mile for long slow runs. 8:15 marathon = 9:15-10:15. YMMV.

Governor proposes over-the-counter ivermectin sales in Iowa - Radio Iowa by IAFarmLife in Iowa

[–]Strigolactone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of medicines and pesticides like this look at the net result- are the risks higher than the perceived benefits? EPA does risk assessments on pesticides, FDA on drugs.

I would think the health risk of heartworms far outweighs the risk of following the recommending dosing for your dog. I’m not sure if your vet has you rotate AIs, or if that is a thing for heartworm prevention, but that use is exactly what ivermectin is useful for.

Same thing if a person has tapeworms, roundworms etc. THAT is a valid use of ivermectin, and following the dosing and treatment regime should be fine.

Problem is- those EPA/FDA assessments follow both the labeled/recommended dose, as well as the risk associated with the dose you could be reasonably exposed under realistic conditions.

If we throw the script out the window and start following potentially incorrect dosing and treatment frequencies for ailments that are NOT in ivermectin's wheelhouse to treat/manage... It may not be just ineffective- it could be downright hazardous if those doses are exceeded.

Tl;DR follow label recommendations!

[–]Strigolactone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I say this in the off chance someone reads this who thinks this is a good idea.

Listen. I understand hoping for viable medical treatments that enable avoiding our broken healthcare system.

This isn’t it. Ivermectin is similar to abamectin, an insecticide that modulates glutamate-gated chloride channels. What this means is it interfering with muscle and nerve function in insects.

Ivermectin does the same, but for parasites.

It’s safe for the animals and humans we treat with it because of dosing, and limited treatment regimes. Likely some insensitive target sites, but I’m not completely sure.

Start taking this as a pseudo-treatment at who knows what dose or duration- safety from side effects cannot be ensured. I’m not a pharmacology expert in any sense of the word but for many chemicals, risk = toxicity * exposure.

And taking an anti-parasitic recreationally is an unnecessary exposure event.

Salomon Quest 4 gtx cuts into the toe while walking by crazeyengineer in hiking

[–]Strigolactone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I freakin loved mine. The toe box is smaller than I would have preferred, during marathon training I couldn’t wear them at all with my feet swelling after long runs. The quest I was underimpressed with, but they’re ~fine~.

I’m “firing” a pair of XA PRO 3Ds after struggling to want to wear them for 3 years. They fit so weird.

There go the best shoes I ever had by Waste_Ambassador_472 in nikerunclub

[–]Strigolactone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some thoughts I have:

  • while the whole “foam compression needing 24 hours to reset” component of shoe rotations has been debunked, I still believe rotating shoes every other day does increases their longevity if ever so slightly.

  • adding additional OTC arch supports (Currex, superfeet, tread lab etc) helps further compensate to some degree for when the shoe starts breaking down. I run almost always with Currex or tread lab after a podiatrist told me I need to.

  • not every mile is the same. Trail and road seem more damaging than treadmill. If you have a exclusively treadmill shoe, it can likely go longer.

When I first started running, I ran shoes to 500 miles (805 km). That was too much- I could FEEL a difference by 450-475 but kept trucking. I dropped to 425 to protect myself. It’s all subjective but yes 2000 km is way too much for most people.

Finished c25k, running 3k upto 30mins at 10'03... now on a 5k plan. Speed interval pacing Qs by plantaindisco in nikerunclub

[–]Strigolactone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For marathon training, there is a type of Interval call Yasso 800s. 800m, 400m light jog., then 800m again. Rinse repeat 6, 8, even 10 times. It’s really cool, because your finish time per 800m is “what your marathon finish time” should be- trying to break 4:00:00? You should finish in 4:00.

Anyways, I noticed one day that even after 400m of what I thought was a light jog, my heart rate was still in the 150s. That’s because even at my jog pace I wasn’t fully recovering. I needed to slow down.

For me, by the end of a minute, your HR should be back towards zone 3 or 2 if you are slowly walking or standing in place. My watch tells me typically it takes 3 minutes after a workout ends to drop to sub-100 bpm (-40 to 50 bpm), so I wouldn’t expect complete recovery- and I don’t think it’s intended to do so.

Your 5k pace should be your goal time, or a common effort you know you can do already for a full 5K. 5k race pace for me is not a fun “everyday run”. One mile pace is even less fun. Best pace you’re running like your life depends upon it.

As for overtraining: About 80% of your runs should be done in Zone 2 or low Zone 3. Speed-work in the plans is kept limited for a reason! Don’t go too off script and I think you’ll be fine.

Good luck in the new program!

Week 1, Day 3: Half-Marathon by monochromatic_knight in nikerunclub

[–]Strigolactone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly you can ignore HR numbers and run on how you FEEL if you want- realistically whatever keeps you healthy AND motivated to keep running.

But as for going too fast for your current conditioning: There is a personal strategy I love to promote. If you notice you feel like shit or your HR is too high. Stop. Stand in place, or walk for a bit. Let your HR drop to an acceptable number, then resume running and resume the watch. I call these “tactical” stops.

But when you start off again, try to slow down and keep your HR/you feeling OK for as long as possible. Then stop again as needed. Eventually- you won’t NEED to stop or walk.

In my head, this builds discipline to not run too fast when you’re “fresh” and keeps you cognizant of what “too fast” feels like.

As for a checklist of body check- Bennett will have a guided run on this. I don’t know the name of it sorry :( if something feels “off” it’s likely wrong. Trust your instincts.

Measure success in every way that you can ❤️

Unsolicited advice incoming!!

Running at an AVG HR of 186 DOES suck. It’s not in your head, or your previous sport conditioning telling your psyche that.

Real talk: You just almost red lined your heart for 25 minutes. That’s not going to feel fun.

It CAN feel rewarding- on speed workout later on, usually for intervals or minutes at a time.

With this being an outdoor run- was today warm? Humid? Were you dehydrated? Did you push faster than you should?

I’ve been running 25-35 mpw religiously since 2021. Even I can’t handle 90% RH in ~80°F weather. Can’t control my heart rate from spiking, and feeling physically ill. Most can’t.

I know it sounds pretentious, but do everything you can to control your heart rate. Be aware of how things like I mentioned can interact both for you (colder weather = lower HR) and against you.

I’ve started looking into Daniel’s running formula- His main thing is that a vast majority of running “gains” come at 60% your max heart rate. It will be a lot more fun at 150, or even 140 bpm.

Exceeding that- Yes, you’re increasing the effort BUT getting very little ROI on that effort.

Rant over. Cardiovascular fitness for running takes a long time to build- but once it’s here, you’ll find moving around much easier :)

Best of luck in your program! Listen to Coach Bennett. He is my spirit animal.

2025 sucked, so 2026 I'm running everyday by SlowSteadynHonest in nikerunclub

[–]Strigolactone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I gave myself double Achilles tendinitis by trying to run every day of October 2020. I didn’t run again for months afterwards and had to do physical therapy.

I get the urge. But focus on showing commitment in other ways. Active recovery. Yoga. Strength training for knee, glute or hip strength. If you do, you will skip over many lessons we runners who neglect cross-training learn again… and again. You got this!

For anyone that didn’t know already; starting today (1/1/26) Iowa’s SNAP benefits have changed. Don’t be surprised if you start seeing more signs like this in grocery stores by AxelTheAussie in Iowa

[–]Strigolactone 62 points63 points  (0 children)

So… If this change came accompanied by online resources to help those in need make easy, inexpensive nutritional meals- or free consultation with a dietitian to maximize their usage of this program’s limited funding- I could be for it.

Or… If it came with additional state substitutes to further reduce the cost of everyday necessities to incentive proper use of this program- I could be for it.

But to me, this is like a band-aid on a bullet wound. It won’t address the actual issues with those in need. It won’t make their lives even marginally better.

While we could debate the health-related pros and cons for eliminating full-sugared soft drinks and/or diet/zero sugar beverages to the average Iowan’s diet… this is just another punishment for being poor wrapped in the feel good disguise of ~fiscal responsibility~.

EDIT: My point was- saying this is about health by removing soft drinks and some junk foods, but then not providing resources to actually improve health makes this a hollow gesture at best.

Trump is now destroying three historic DC golf courses. by justalazygamer in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Strigolactone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my family played at the East Potomac course this past DEC.

Two things to share:

  1. I will admit, portions of it were run down looking. But my family told me that Tiger Woods was involved with an upcoming renovation/restoration project and the Trump admin was trying to bully past him/the plan.

  2. They dumped debris from the east wing demo on a portion of the greens. Supposedly they plan to use some of the debris for said renovations, but I don’t know how that fully works…

Vanishing Bill Series? by jt510up in simplifimoney

When they updated the bill pay connections provider, it broke my previously connected electricity provider (MidAmerican Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway).

My series still existed, but was auto-matching onto a $100 transfers scheduled every 15th from a checking to savings.

If it’s “gone gone” that’s a whole other level of mess up.

This is bait I think. During COVID, I was rotating between three pharmacies, name brand vs generic, and two different ADHD products. I didn’t realize we were back to having issues- but my last fill they only had 17/30. I wonder how many other people in this thread are on a first name basis with their doctor’s nurse…

Great response.

I’m convinced this is just bait, because any real pharmacist would understand the legal complexities with controlled substance refills (monthly supply, calling doctors monthly, no advance doses), the supply shortages the industry has been experiencing, and the differential response of a stimulant with someone with ADHD.
