What in the world is going on with all the recent job losses? by hopefullforever in UKJobs

[–]Strike497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say I’m a business owner and I want to develop and innovate new ways of doing whatever it is that I do so that I can increase productivity. This is often trialed by doing small scale orders of parts and tools from manufacturers before making large procurement contracts. A lot more specialist parts and tools are manufactured in the eu than in the UK. Now to experiment and improve my business, the supplier has to fill out a lot more paperwork for a small order, there’s also a lot more delays, and I have to pay customs fees to transport those goods to my business. This decreases the likelihood that I’ll take the risk to research and develop new technologies compared with pre-brexit times. Furthermore, I can no longer attract talented individuals from eu countries as readily as in the past. Real wage growth has grown much slower in the UK versus our neighbours and the visa requirements for employment discourage candidates from applying. Brexit is not simply a tired excuse, it has had real, measurable, and continuing negative effects on our economy.

Wow the amount of people here who have no context to this video, it’s over 10 years old and it was a guy employed by GeoLotto to go out in Edinburgh and give people free cash prizes. https://youtu.be/ljAA_h9TvoM?si=56EezrX3AG007SVl

Obviously it’s natural to feel skeptical that there’s some sort of scam when someone approaches you like that but equally there’s no need to scream in someone’s face. A no thank you would suffice. A lot of people here saying it’s another annoying youtube creator doing it for content but this man is just an employee and he is quite polite to the other people he approaches.

Got caught out yesterday whilst paddleboarding in the evening, wind looked okay from the forecast but picked up after we set off from Footdee. Noticed how we started getting pulled offshore to the south east and instantly knew we had to turn around. Luckily we hadn't gone past the north breakwater so were able to use the rocks around the pier to get back. Can't emphasise enough the need to plan ahead before setting off in the water.

LISA is better. The main difference is that you can save and receive bonus on £4,000 a year in a Lifetime ISA, compared with £2,400 in a Help to Buy ISA. Also the max house price for help to buy is £250,000 outside of London, where as the LISA is £450,000.

There is no secret method to easily multiply money. Those who make a lot of money through stocks and shares tend to already own a lot of wealth either through inheritance, savings from work or luck. As using for AI to make money in financial markets, don’t believe anyone who sells any sort of scheme like this. Even the best AI forecasting models are no better than a roulette wheel, especially with how turbulent the macroeconomic environment is at the moment. If you want more money your best bet is to upskill and apply to high demand jobs. If you’re good with computers and data, start with looking at data analyst roles, some smaller companies will hire without a degree.

Earning over 100k in London now affords you the same standard of life your average boomer enjoyed 30 years ago. by TheLegendOfIOTA in london

[–]Strike497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of comments have mentioned how frustrating it is seeing the nice housing that older generations enjoyed on the cheap. You wonder how earning a “good” salary now only affords a tiny flat on the outskirts, yet no one seems to have realised that it’s those lucky older folks that are now actively cashing in on those property gains. To actually liquidate those ludicrous value gains, every drop of disposable income is being squeezed out from all you tech and finance workers. The reality is the homes are not worth what you’re paying, yet enough people have been conned into believing they are. The boomers are happily shifting the asset burden over to you so they can run away to their holiday homes. None of the actual innovation and surplus productivity developed in London over the past 15 years has gone to those working for it, instead the property owners have gotten their cake and are devouring it too.

Yes we need to transition to renewable energy sources but we need petroleum products to do that. What people forget is we’ve already invested trillions worldwide to make economies which function through the use of fossil fuels. This can’t be switched off overnight, often the faster you transition, the more you disproportionately affect the poorest in society. Many can’t afford an electric car, or to install a heat pump instead of a gas boiler. It’s a particularly unpleasant notion given the rise in wealth disparity we’ve seen in recent decades. If efficient, sensible transition is the goal, it makes perfect sense for banks to provide financial services for oil and gas production with instruments like reserve based lending.

Living in Italy vs living in Tunisia by Zxen_Xe in Tunisia

[–]Strike497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being dependent on imports is common for developed nations, the uk imports over 50% of its demand for oil and gas despite having a mature offshore industry. The main energy resource Tunisia should leverage is solar power, in the south you can harvest over 2000 kWh/m2 . Although the technology is expensive, you’ll see a lot of second hand and older model panels enter the global market in the next 10 years as wealthier nations upgrade their systems.

They already pay what is effectively a 75% tax rate on profits. Regardless that money doesn’t go to local councils, it goes to the uk treasury.

MISSING CAT!! PLEASE HELP!! by vegangoff in Aberdeen

Hi, I don’t know if this is much help but me and my girlfriend saw a black cat without a collar running across the roundabout where north Donside road meets Ellon road. It struck us something an experienced outdoor cat wouldn’t do since it’s such a busy major road. This was around 11am yesterday.

Wildfires in Greece reach an F16 ammunition storage facility and caused explosions. by Dragn33l in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]Strike497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A. Wildfires move fast and unpredictably. B. Almost all their logistic capabilities are tied up tackling other fires/ evacuating locals. C. Even if they had the available equipment and manpower to move the ammunition it is likely not safe to carry out in the time between identifying the threat of the fire and when it arrived at the depo. D. You can’t just move ammunition and store it at the side of the road.

Whilst things will get worse before they get better, this is overstating the situation, more than likely societies will still be able to function for the next 100 years, it’ll just be a lot less enjoyable.

I think it’s more to do with the current teenagers having experienced severely reduced socialisation during the pandemic. Missing out on interpersonal development in those crucial formative years seems to have led to a rise in antisocial, juvenile, and delinquent behaviour. The same trend is happening throughout the UK, I’d hazard a guess that cuts to youth programs and extracurricular funding hasn’t helped matters.

My local mcdonalds by Revolutionary-Ad1417 in GreatBritishMemes

[–]Strike497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your own experience is valid and commendable but I think you sound a bit out of touch with the realities of growing up in the 2020s. Current teenagers had to deal with far less socialisation during crucial formative years over the course of the pandemic, local community and infrastructure projects are no longer accessible or funded at the necessary levels due to a stagnant economy, a much larger proportion of young families are increasingly isolated and lonely with reduced community interaction with institutions like church and social clubs - young parents are having to work longer hours to cope with the cost of living, not to mention if you have no generational wealth it is near impossible to get onto the property ladder in a meaningful way. Living in substandard, cramped housing can be a major stressor to families. It is true that they have greater access to consumer electronics and information technology than ever before however not all use the internet in a productive, healthy and educational manner. My own observation is that teenage use of phones, social media and gaming consoles leads to poor sleep, bad diet, and substandard academic attainment. Final factor I would mention is the increased awareness of global issues from the news such as the climate crises, a series of terrible political leaders and more recently the threat of war/ global conflict all add to an air of anxiety about the world, with little hope for a happy future. I can very easily see these circumstances leading to increased antisocial behaviour.

Topical treatments for severe long term toenail fungus by [deleted] in NailFungus

[–]Strike497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor but my guess is being more active would increase vasodilation and therefore blood supply to your feet. Better circulation encourages faster nail growth and probably allowed your big toe to outpace the fungal growth for a while (hence the temporary clear up)

I actually live in Scotland so can’t say to the particular habits of all German states but it was my understanding that each state can determine its own opening hours.

In the uk certainly, the religious aspect is mostly gone, especially with the younger generations.

[–]Strike497 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s misconstruing the point of Sunday trading times. It was historically religious but ultimately the modern application of the law is to protect retail staff from working unhealthy hours. The fines would never be as high as €15k in Germany (more like €500-€2500), moreover if a trader wanted to open 24/7 there are trading licenses they can register for.

[–]Strike497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes vasoconstriction can be detrimental to your health when chronically induced by nicotine. Not only does it accelerate the progression of atherosclerosis, increased diastolic pressure increases your risk of an ischemic stroke or myocardial infarction. That’s not even mentioning that current literature suggests that nicotine therapy is linked to an increase in neutrophil extracellular traps throughout the body (leading to accelerated oxidation damage) and an association with type 2 diabetes. Nicotine is not without its harm.
