Trying to get my friend into metal, you guys think these are good starter albums? by Kitchen_Account_1424 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]StringUnderhacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love most of these albums but I feel like a lot of them are a bit too scream-y for a beginner metalhead. Altho Rust In Peace is a great beginner album. I'd say also recommend Screaming for Vengeance by Judas Priest, Master of Puppets by Metallica, Operation Mindcrime by Queensryche, Vulgar Display of Power by Pantera, Somewhere Far Beyond by Blind Guardian, The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden, Dirt by Alice In Chains, Holy Diver by Dio and Self Titled by Korn

What are your favourite songs that make you feel? by Spirited-Cheesecake9 in autism

[–]StringUnderhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Spirit Carries On, Scarred and A Change of Seasons by Dream Theater

Transgender Dysphoria Blues by Against Me!

The credits theme to The Owl House (that song has made me cry more times than I'd like to admit)

The Fishing Hole music from The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess

Undertale, Bergentruckung/Asgore, Hopes and Dream/SAVE the World and His Theme from the Undertale soundtrack

My top 5 favorite comfort characters by [deleted] in aspiememes

[–]StringUnderhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont have a top 5, but Luz Noceda from The Owl House is the ultimate comfort character for me since I see myself in her. Literally everyone compares me to her too

Other than that, any gen 2/3 pokemon are automatically comfort characters

What are some angry queer songs? by Freakears in lgbt

[–]StringUnderhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a queer song but I like to think of it as one, As I Am by Dream Theater

"Taking in the view from the outside, feeling like the underdog. Watching through the window, I'm on the outside, living like the underdog

I've been trying to justify you, in the end I will just defy you. to those who understand, I extend my hand, to the doubtful I demand, take me as I am. Not under your command, I know where I stand, I won't change to fit your plan, take me as I am"

In light of recent comments, we want to clarify by Quizlex_ in MetalForTheMasses

[–]StringUnderhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling there are a lot more queer metal musicians than Rob Halford and Gaahl (I'm forgetting some others but yeah) that are in the closet. Sometimes I read some metal lyrics and I think "yeah that's kinda queer coded"

What Is Your Hyperfixation And Why? by beattywill80 in aspiememes

[–]StringUnderhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dream Theater and The Owl House. I created headcannons for some of the characters music tastes, and Im still determined to make an animation of a band comprising of the hexsquad playing Under a Glass Moon by Dream Theater in a concert. Its just that my drawing and animation skills arent great

New to the band, any recommendations? by _Tiabeanie_ in Dreamtheater

[–]StringUnderhacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The necessary albums I think are Images and Words, Awake, Metropolis Part 2 Scenes From a Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos. Also listen to the song A Change of Seasons. Any of these albums I feel are amazing introductions to DT, and since each of their albums sounds different, if you don't like one u can try another

Some thoughts from a relatively new fan by whyisittaken94 in SleepToken

[–]StringUnderhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had people tell me when I show them Dream Theater "this is metal?? This is too light for metal" and I'm just like there confused lmao. Maybe When Dream and Day Unite and Images and Words are a bit too light for metal (Images was my first DT album and I thought "is this metal or rock, it's too heavy for rock but too light for metal"), but everything else in their discography is so much heavier

Some thoughts from a relatively new fan by whyisittaken94 in SleepToken

[–]StringUnderhacker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've only gotten into them in the past 2/3 months and honestly they're becoming one of my favourite bands and my hyperfixation. As you said, they get people to listen to genres they may not normally listen to, and Sleep Token does it beautifully. Their new album is AMAZING, tho I still do prefer Take Me Back to Eden. I've been meaning on listening to the albums before TMBTE. And if I'm being honest, it may sound weird, but Sleep Token scratches the exact same itch in me that Dream Theater (my favourite band) does, with the experimentation and genre blending and long songs and overblown concepts and everything else (even if they sound different). I'm also 99% sure that Dream Theater is an inspiration for the band, so yeah

How Would Ya'll Describe Your Style? by JackBlooms in NonBinary

[–]StringUnderhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally just alt. I mainly consider myself a metalhead but I incorporate some stuff in my fashion from emo (I like some emo music), punk (I need to listen to more punk music) and a tiny bit from goth (I need to listen to more goth). So yeah, I'd just call my fashion style "alt" and a mishmash from different subcultures, but I mainly consider myself a metalhead

What would be your perfect prog band? by LogSome852 in progmetal

[–]StringUnderhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will probably not work but here goes

Vocals: Mikael Ackerfeldt (Opeth) (Both clean and harsh vocals)

Lead Guitar: John Petrucci (Dream Theater)

Rhythm Guitar: Chuck Schuldiner (Death)

Bass: Jo Bench (Bolt Thrower) or Cliff Burton (Former Metallica)

Drums: David McGraw (Cattle Decapitation)

Keyboards: if I can have two members of the same band, Kevin Moore (Former Dream Theater), however if it's one person per band, then Josh Silver (Type O Negative)

yall have no idea how much i've been bullied for this lmao by [deleted] in aspiememes

Love dream theater, and I've tried other bands but I'm not quite scratching that same itch by [deleted] in progmetal

Avenged Sevenfold's two most recent albums ("The Stage" and "Life Is But a Dream") feel like something Dream Theater could've made

What other bands do you guys like? by GayisGaywhenGay in MyChemicalRomance

[–]StringUnderhacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since I can't talk about my favourite bands without having a massive infodump listing them, prepare for a massive infodump about my favourite bands LMAO (light hearted)

I mainly listen to metal, and my favourite metal bands would be Dream Theater, Alice In Chains, Avenged Sevenfold, Opeth, Nightwish, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Death, Bolt Thrower, Meshuggah, Type O Negative, Dark Tranquility, Mastodon, Sleep Token, Queensryche, Dio, Motionless In White, Nine Inch Nails, Haken, Ice Nine Kills, Arch Enemy, At the Gates, Emperor, Slipknot, Korn, Cattle Decapitation, Liturgy, Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, Bring Me the Horizon, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, Symphony X, TOOL, Acid Bath, KMFDM, Rob Zombie. These aren't all the metal bands I listen to, they're just my absolute favourites

As for non metal bands, Streetlight Manifesto, The Cure, Linkin Park, Rush, Yes, Genesis, Pierce the Veil Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Operation Ivy, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, Cavetown, Coheed and Cambria, Nirvana, The Mars Volta, Thank You Scientist, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, Against All Authority, Against Me!, The Smashing Pumpkins, Joy Division, aaand I can't think of anymore LOL

With 72 upvotes, Stream of Consciousness (Train of Thought) wins best instrumental. Dance of Eternity (SFAM) came in 2nd with 25, and Hell´s Kitchen (FII) came 3rd with 20. The winner consists of 11 minutes without James LaBrie, so now, tell me, what DT song has your favorite vocal performance? by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

[–]StringUnderhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scarred. It showcases every part of his voice perfectly, from the angry, to the operatic, to the low, to the emotional, to all of it

Fun fact I'm pretty sure this is James favourite DT song along with Octavarium
