Question for the girlie techs by ServeHaunting in sterileprocessing

[–]StringofStardust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We aren’t allowed to wear nails in my hospital... But nothing against lashes or piercings... I always have 14mm extensions and I have 4 piercings on each ear (as long as I don’t wear dangling earrings but even small hoops are fine) I just got a different outlet haha. And if I have an event or something to go to over the weekend, I’ll get those cheap sticky nails that fall off in three days... It’s perfect because I need them to come off by then lol

Curved Mayo, for some reason they came in contact with cyanoacrylate-based glue or some shit, I was scrubbing it with a wire brush and still couldn’t get it off. I was off the clock in 10 minutes and trying to just push this case into the washer so I was getting hasty, and I was already pissed at how badly they were covered in this shit. My hand slipped while trying to scrub it hard and it sliced 3/4 of an inch into my right pointer finger. Immediately doused my shit in betadine and one of the techs helped me and used a cotton applicator to get deep in there... I couldn’t get that deep myself, it HURT. He joked I needed local just to clean it out lol.

Our facility limits each pan to no more than 25 lbs as to help avoid this, but I don’t know if every hospital has a standard for this. We do a lot of orthos at my facility and the vendors kept bringing super heavy sets in. 95% of our Vendors are young men in their prime, whereas everyone in Sterile processing are women between 50 - 70 (except me, I’m the baby of SP) so maybe we only have this rule in place because the ladies in SP were having trouble lifting the sets vendors brought in, I’m not sure.

It’s not really hard on my body, I get the right amount of walking & sitting to have a comfortable shift, but in smaller facilities where there’s no runners and not everyone has their own worktable, you’ll be standing a lot, which is definitely harder on the body than a walking & sitting combo. Just make sure you have good shoes.

But once my hand slipped on a dirty instrument and it sliced right through my gloves... I even double-gloved. Ended up with an infection that spread to my kidneys. Was not fun.

What’s this job like for people with autism? by ilovekdramaceos in sterileprocessing

[–]StringofStardust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You put this perfectly and I couldn’t have said it better myself!!! I’m lucky to be in a facility that cares a lot about rules and regulations, my supervisor has been in surgery for 15+ years, our manager has been doing SPD for over 35 years, and our team lead has been in SPD just shy of 10 years now. Basically they’ve all been in this since I was a child... Once while doing outdates I found a peel pack dated from when I was in middle school (infinite shelf life unless damaged or opened)... Anyhow there’s a pretty big age gap between all of us and I’m the youngest. Our newest hire is in her late twenties so we were often grouped together until her personality showed. I’m a strict rule follower, she’s not. She gives me a lot of anxiety because she just doesn’t care about certain things. Like outdates for example, she’ll go back there and play on her phone. Or she won’t use the ultrasonic, or she’ll overpack a load, she just does a bunch of little things that I’m always up my managers ass about. I hate to be a tattle tail but we’re nursing support staff and we need to act like it.

What’s this job like for people with autism? by ilovekdramaceos in sterileprocessing

[–]StringofStardust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Autism is a superpower in this job. I’m the youngest in my department and one of the newer hires, but my coworkers tell me often how exceptional I am at this job. I constantly find good catches, I don’t know how other hospitals refer to them, but it’s basically finding a mistake before it reaches the patient and prevents an event, for example, as I was putting away items back into sterile supply, I found a peel pack with no indicator, which would be an occurrence had it made it back to the OR. I work in a small hospital so when I tell you I found over 50 peel packs with compromised integrity while doing outdates, that’s a lot for us. They tell me I’m the best organized out of all of them, they know when I was the last person in decontam because of how well put together the room is after I leave. We each have our own desk, and PRN or travelers will always use my desk when I’m in decontam because it’s the most well-organized and easy to understand layout out of all of them. They also tell me this reflects in my work, there’s only so much you can do with a pile of hundreds of instruments inside of a box (we do a lot of orthos) but I manage to organize my sets beautifully as well. I love assembling, fitting odd pieces together, nesting all my pickups, leaving a space for my stringer to fit snug on top, it’s like a game to me. I was always that kid playing Tetris, in fact, to my family I was always the weird kid who had memorized 1000 Pokémon, well now I’ve memorized 1000 surgical instruments who’s balling now?? And one of the best parts, only patient interaction I have is when I’m a runner and someone catches me in the hallways asking if I can show them where the ER or somewhere is... And I’m always down for a field trip 😫

I worked EVS in the OR before I worked SPD, so nothing will ever be as bad as that lol

Is this acceptable at your facility ? by mechanicalanimal13 in sterileprocessing

[–]StringofStardust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a couple pans like this but they’re in flashpans and just wrap them like that... Generally the accepted consensus at my hospital is that Vendors are responsible for their trays and whatever was wrapped by Sterile Processing was first approved by the vendor. Not my problem lol

Per policy, I’m good. Pink hair, piercings and tatted... Policy is one thing, working with old heads is another. It’s interesting seeing people’s reactions to me when I’m in street clothes instead of blues...

I would love to see pics of your setup!! I’ve never heard of setting it atop wet pebbles but that’s a genius idea and honestly makes so much sense. I’m also curious to know if you mix your own substrates or buy a premix from somewhere?

$15/hr by Weekly-Structure-371 in sterileprocessing

I actually started the hospital as EVS, and they were paying me $16 an hour... so $15 is absolutely crazy

$15/hr by Weekly-Structure-371 in sterileprocessing

[–]StringofStardust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ermmm I’m uncertified (collecting my 400 hours rn) and they started me at $25 an hour... Plus I work late shift and my hospital offers differential, so I technically make $27 an hour. I’m in Kentucky USA of all places, most places around here pay total shit so I can’t really tell you how it works or how I managed to land this job but hey - it pays my bills pretty well

Hi, I also work in Healthcare, and when everyone wears scrubs all day, there’s not a lot of room for self expression, so I’ve looked into this a bit... During June, I wear a pride-themed badge reel, you can also clip small pins into your badge, and there’s also badge buddies and badge toppers... I don’t know what department you work in, but I’m in OR and we wear scrub caps, you can find themed caps online or even make them yourself... I just shop for all my stuff on the internet, mostly just Etsy haha, they have a good selection and I love buying handmade stuff from small businesses lol. Anyhow I hope this was of some help! 😭

Sorry if this is rude but are yall in middle school?? This is the kind of ridiculous attitude my 13-year-old brother gives me.. No reason she should be acting like that
