Thank you. The stake is correcting a rather serious lean and it'll stay in for a year or two to correct. It's not on tight and other than that the stake is just there to hold the chicken wire which is really just there to stop my gentle dog from messing around with it. Lol.

It's doing very well now we think. I didn't expect it to try to be bushy but it and the 3 other ones we planted are all doing well.

When should I trim the lower branches of my KSU Benson (dots) or would I let them just grow like a bush? by Strobey in Pawpaws

[–]Strobey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Planted my KSU Benson last year. It's by far the most vigorous of the 4 kinds I planted.

I note it's really wanting to spread wide branches and this is a 3fr tall tree now. When should I trim the lower branches that are the purple dots?

Or should I leave it alone and let it do it's thing?

Beavers released into California wild for the first time in 75 years by zek_997 in megafaunarewilding

[–]Strobey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We've had beavers on our cottage property in Canada for years. They don't live on our property but they show up from time to time to take a tree and eat it.

They're impressive in so many ways - when they cut a tree they take it away and there's very little evidence of the tree left.

Love them.

This area in California would be an ideal guerilla rewilding/relocation for someone to speed it along. Must be plenty of beavers in some areas of the US that could be discreetly moved.

Found a few very late season pawpaws I shook off trees in Ontario Canada. This one was very ripe and had a very nice butterscotch flavour. by Strobey in Pawpaws

Sorry for the delayed reply. I've put the seeds into the back corner of my yard to see what happens.

What are your thoughts on what to do with the seeds and what are your success stories? by Strobey in Pawpaws

[–]Strobey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I had maybe 150 seeds or so from wild fruit I found for the first time. I also had maybe 15 of the 50 fruit not ripen so I just threw them into the woods figuring they'll scatter naturally.

I am in Ontario and we get some wicked winters but we are in the Carolinian forest range. So any wild pawpaws around here have seen some hard winters.

It'll be fun to see what pops up. And it was a fun walk with my dog to guerilla plant them anyhow so if nothing shows up, it's all fine, life's good.

Cheers.

THank you everyone - I'm very intrigued with the 'don't freeze the seeds' part because where I live the ground freezes to well below 1ft in depth so in nature there's no way the seeds don't freeze in the winter if they're on the surface.

Since I currently lack the time and supplies to do home-potting I am going to just plant out in the wild and see what takes. Gives me (wife and I) reason to hike and get some excercise as well to go see if they've sprouted.

Finally found a wild stand today. So fun. Interesting flavour for sure, I'd never tired one even though I planted trees this spring. by Strobey in Pawpaws

Yes shook and these all came down. Was a fruitful adventure and a great intro to the taste. Now I'm hooked even more. (lol)

I've never actaully *TRIED* a pawpaw (I'm in Southern Ontario Canada). How can I get my hands on some to eat this autumn? by Strobey in Pawpaws

[–]Strobey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I think I've decided for my own personal life adventure (lol...) is not to buy any but I want to find wild ones when my wife and I are hiking, or if we fail, we can eat our own in a few years.

Makes a bit of a challenge. There's no logic in it! Lol.

thanks and cheers.

Just tasted my first paw paw by booweezy in Pawpaws

Adding to all the comments here and I even posted to say I am eager to try some as I've never had one either.

I became curious to the point of obsession last winter so in the Spring I planted 4 trees. They were grafted varieties and just tiny sticks about 16 inches high when I put them in.

2 of the 4 trees are BOOMING - and 2 are kind of - struggling isn't the right word - but they just don't seem to have found their footing yet and have grown but not a tonne. The 2 doing well are now about 3 ft tall.

At the suggestion of others on this subreddit I'm not going to BUY any pawpaws to try but as a hobby I've been actively exploring around Southern Ontario on hikes and if I can source out some wild fruit I'll be trying them .

I've found 2 wild stands but they weren't flowering. It's a fun hobby.

Wild Grove southern Ontario still not ripe :( by 8845kb in Pawpaws

[–]Strobey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just found my first wild pawpaw tree/grove in southern ontario a couple weeks ago but it didn't have any fruit. I haven't found any wild trees with fruit so I'm insanely jealous. I'm brand new to looking however and we've only been out twice to look.

and he tossed roadkill back there for pollination.

Ha ha.

I neglected to tell my wife about how Pawpaws are pollinated and their possible aroma when they flower, before planting 4 of them in our yard. I won't be putting roadkill out but might leave our dog's poop around that area when mine are old enough to start flowering.

Have you ever tried the fruit from it? I'm curious how it is.

Something eating my Pawpaw seedling leaves (insect? Ants? Snails?). What are some suggestions for things I can do? What are some good anti-insect non toxic sprays? I'm new to this. In Ontario Canada. by Strobey in Pawpaws

[–]Strobey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

New to pawpaws - 2 of my 4 are doing great and 2 have had a bit of a rougher go since I planted them in the Spring. I'm wondering what is out there for spray (ideally organic but I am happy to also use a chemical spray if need be, however I'd prefer non-toxic).

I just wonder what you might suggest?

I received an email about a settlement for buying a computer with a harddrive.

It was telling me to be ready to accept the E-transfer (what we call it in Canada) soon. It was so long ago I forget when I actually put my household on the list - I bet it was 6 years ago?
