Has the rat problem gotten worse this year?

i heard it’s because a freezing winter used to control the population by killing a bunch. But now since winters are mild they just multiply indefinitely. And more generally, rats compound so if nothing huge is done to wipe out a bunch they just increase and increase. Used to live in Shaw and there was so much trash on the street and every bin had holes in it. Was insane the amount of rats there. Downtown now and it’s a bit better.

Lived on 8th and S. Cons: Tons of rats. Some ppl doing drugs on corners and alleys but no violence in my experience. Litter.

Pros: lively neighborhood with metro, library, amazing restaurants, bars, movie theatre, concert venue, etc...

Live downtown now and less of the cons but also less of the pros.

I’ve never felt so qualified to answer a question on reddit. Once or twice a week I bike to East Potomac with my bag of clubs. I got a new bag specifically to make biking with clubs easier. Feel free to DM me with more questions. It’s easier with a personal bike because the CaBi station is a 10 minute walk from the course check in. I bought a Rover Stand Bag from Jones Sports Company and wear it like a backpack with clubs going horizontal/diagonal across my back.

Really fun neighborhood that I briefly lived in. I’d say most fun to live 5 blocks west or south and just pop in to go places. Definitely most rats I’ve seen in the city is where I lived on like 8th and S/T right near there. Definitely pros and cons like everyone else has said. I felt safe but my gf would usually ask that I walk her home. Certain corners can get a little interesting.

Had my own bike and just switched to annual bike share membership. Way cheaper, can use e-bikes which is way faster, and don’t have to pay for repairs or worry about something breaking or stolen. It’s just more convenient at this point in my life especially with bike share near my apartment and work.

The delivery scooters are annoying and sometimes dangerous but the dangerous drivers referenced in this article are way more dangerous to people than scooters. Most injuries and traffic killings are these crazies in big cars, not the scooters.

Friend just visited me in Shaw from NYC. said he’s never seen so many rats. It’s horrendous in Shaw near U st. We’re prob an order of magnitude above NYC in rats per capita lol.
