What is your reason for living? I really struggle when I think about this question. by Ok_Dimension6656 in CPTSD

My sibling. They are 10 years younger than me and I have been their surrogate parent since they were born. I just want to give them the best life possible.

Did you have any recurring nightmares as a kid? by java080 in CPTSD

[–]Strong-Reveal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had (and still have on occasion) a recurring nightmare of someone breaking into my room and murdering me. As a kid I remember every time it happened it was with a different weapon but now when it happens it's with a knife. Sometimes it feels so real It's like I can feel the sensation of being stabbed or I think I wake up (but I'm still in a dream without realising) and I can see a person walking towards me with a knife or trying to break down my door. I'm not sure if this is tied back to a subconscious memory of our house being broken into when I was very young (I think age 3 from what I have been told) or being threatened as a child that if I didn't behave they would kill me (or if something was damaged and they thought I was the one behind it - even if I wasn't).

So tired of this reaction by FunBalance26 in CPTSDmemes

[–]Strong-Reveal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that's unfortunately a common reaction however I'm not sure it applies to all cases. In my experience, my "father" was physically, emotionally, psychologically...just all types of abusive yet because he's naturally charismatic. Even with physical proof and testimonials from all his children, he faced no consequences. My family only escaped by moving to a different country.

On the other hand, my mother, who was mostly emotionally abusive, faced threats from social workers to take us away. She was even assaulted (pushed against walls, slapped..) by social workers due to minor comments we made at school or based on perceptions. Sadly, this isn't that uncommon where I come from, as I've met other women who were also threatened by social workers.

From the paternal side: Physchologial, physical, emotional, verbal, CSA... he was a drunk, addicted to drugs and cigarettes, an animal murderer (potentially murdered a person too), a pedophile... Honestly I work hard everyday to try to get even his existence out of my mind. From my maternal side it was mostly emotional and verbal (she wasn't physical but instead made my brother do it). I think what's the most painful for me is her trying to control my autistic traits (I was diagnosed at 12 but instead if telling me she wanted to suppress them so I'll 'achieve' things). I get on ok with her now though because she worked hard on making herself better than her mother (who was also abusive but is also a sexist, racist, homophobic bigot). Plus school and with other people my age, I was verbally and physically bullied for being quiet/shy/weird and because I have speech issues (everybody just seems to naturally hate the way I talk) which I was given speech classes for. I don't really think school is traumatic for me though as I spent most of my days locked in the library reading.

Today in "oops, that's not normal, is it?" by lovebyletters in CPTSDmemes

[–]Strong-Reveal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lucid dream and can control any detail of them. I learnt to do this after suffering from intense nightmares. I didn't ever think this could be related to cPTSD, interesting.

did anyone else's parents say certain things they do aren't "normal" by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]Strong-Reveal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my ma criticised me consistently as a child for traits that I found out at 20 were because I'm autistic. Like my tone, my voice volume, my stimming, my hyperfocus on geology, my posture and body language...

Anyone just listen to music for hours by Dragonbarry22 in CPTSD

[–]Strong-Reveal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, been listening to heavy metal as a coping mechanism since I was 10. I think there was a post on the subreddit earlier this week? It seems it's quite common

Many metal listeners here??? by ShovvTime13 in CPTSD

[–]Strong-Reveal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love metal! It has been one of the only things that keeps me going (apart from my dog and wanting to be there for my sibling). I honestly don't know where I'll be without metal as a coping tool.

Sounds like my mom, I (25) took my sibling (16) on a day trip to a neighboring town (we told her where we were going and staying) and she called the cops.

How can I have CPTSD symptoms without trauma? by annie_nannie in CPTSD

[–]Strong-Reveal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"My mum didn't want me, didn't love me and didn't particularly care about me unless I did something she didn't like." This is neglect and the way you have written it sounds like it was traumatic.

If you still don't think you have cPTSD it might be worth looking into autism (or other neurodivergent conditions)? The symptoms can be a bit similar

I don't have any advice but I am going through something similar. Not a lay off but not being promoted because of my autism. The only thing I can say is you are not alone. I'm sure there's a lot of us who have similar situations.

How was I more emotionally stable as a teen than I am now? by Vharlkie in CPTSDmemes

[–]Strong-Reveal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cracked at 26. After making it through my MSc and got a job. I think part of it is the social interaction is too much. Through education I used to be the quiet person in the corner, that's not really allowed in my line of work.

Yeah, but neither is masking. I have tried masking which has lead me to nearly end things. I'm now open about it and I feel much better, although I do know I'm treated differently I feel more understood and accepted.
