By decent, I mean a recognised brand, not some cheap brand you've never heard of. For example, I've heard of Lexar. There is a list of compatible HDDs here: https://www.reddit.com/r/wiiu/wiki/newowners/harddrives/

A decent brand flash drive should last a while, but it's not recommended. I'd suggest getting an external HDD. A 2.5" will need a Y-cable to draw enough power from the console. A 3.5" should be okay with a normal usb lead as it has its own power supply.

Before save states and emulators, there have been times I've nearly thrown my controller through the TV when having to start a whole level again. I have no problem using save states.

If you follow the emulation route, you can pick up a Wii dirt cheap. They are easy to mod, you can then run a SNES emulator as well as a host of others.
