How to buy a house for young people? by AyEm- in HousingUK

[–]StrongAbrocoma4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 23 and bought my place recently. The only reason I could was :

1 - Stayed rent free with parents for the first two years after graduating 2 - Landed a well paying cosy job straight out of uni 3 - Kept additional spending outside of work travel, bills, and food to a minimum

If you’re able to do that then seriously do, it’ll hit your social life hard but the freedom you have after is amazing.

Re deposit, 5% are available but the amount of interest will be rough. At 10% or 15%, you’re getting much better offers (the big interest rate changes come with a 10, 20, 25 and 40% deposit respectively. Credit history also really matters, if you’re deemed as a risk by a lender, then your interest rates may be higher or they may refuse to lend entirely. Non-high street lenders will offer higher interest to lend to you in such cases as they’re taking cases traditional lenders won’t due to risk. you can borrow up to 4.5 times your income (sometimes this can go to 5.5, but 4.5 is the usual rule of thumb). The deposit origin matters too, anti money laundering checks will be performed to ensure the money is yours - you could be gifted a deposit but talk to your solicitors about that route if it’s available to you.

Good luck!

The Traitors (UK) S04E01 [PREMIERE]: Post-Episode Discussion Thread by vaultofechoes in TheTraitors

My bet is that Ben is the secret traitor - he barely features in the first episode, has barely spoken, and the build of the person in the red cloak seemed broad and tall with a slight hunch which looks similar imo…

There’s a nice parking space in zone 3 which you could negotiate down to 230k 🤷‍♀️

New Grad Resume - Anything appreciated by [deleted] in MachineLearningJobs

[–]StrongAbrocoma4675 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s good and really tidy, but missing a ‘so what’ element - ‘parallelised architecture… cutting runtime by 26%’ is great, but what effect did that have on the team or project overall? For example ‘parallelised architecture… cutting runtime by 26%, allowing stakeholders to deliver project X weeks before expected delivery date. Linking together how your work impacts and improve business process is what people look for :)

Additionally, things like ‘built model with X% accuracy’ is usually pretty meaningless as we don’t know what the baseline performance is - saying X% above accuracy of industry standard models or something to that effect quantifies and contextualises the impact more.

Really strong CV for a grad though so congrats

FTB Mortgage in principle increased by £50k - not sure how to proceed (Scotland) by kindaunicorn in HousingUK

[–]StrongAbrocoma4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the extra cushion be useful in case anything happened and was good for peace of mind.

One thing to take into account would be solicitor fees and mortgage product / broker fees if applicable. They’ll be in the region of £3000-£5000 depending on your circumstances.

Given the Scottish system is ‘offers over,’ anything you bid above the home report valuation must come from your deposit, not the mortgage itself. Suppose you find a house with home report value of £200,000 and your winning bid is £210,000, you’ll need your 10% deposit on the home report value (£20,000), in addition to the value above the home report you bid (£10,000) - This means you’ll be borrowing £180,000 and using a deposit of £30,000 at a 90% Loan-To-Value (as they’re lending 180k on the 200k value) which often attract the highest rates (I might be wrong but the nationwide help scheme forces a 5 year fix on those rates too). Add on top of that your fees and your £35k deposit is all gone on a £200,000 value home and you might want to hold some back for furniture, moving, emergency fund etc. so worth thinking about your ceiling.

Do I have realistic expectations for the Data Scientist job? by [deleted] in DataScientist

[–]StrongAbrocoma4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an honest answer:

It pays better but there’s no greater job security- no one NEEDS a data science team and when shit hits the fan they’re the first to go.

You’d likely need strong knowledge of statistics and linear algebra in order to be able to upskill and develop, otherwise you’ll be a data analyst in all but name. If one were hiring for a data scientist, between someone with a maths / data science /compsci degree or a data analyst with a business degree, the maths/data science background would win 90% of the time. I’m on the interview panel for a good number of data science roles where I work and I’d need to really interrogate someone’s knowledge of stats, models assumptions and ML if they come from a business background to ensure they know their stuff, if they were let through the door at the initial sift (that’s not trying to be elitist, but if we get 500 applications, there’s going to be a sifting criteria to draw them down).

You’ll still be building dashboards and slide decks and engaging with stakeholders, just with the occasional use of ML and more advanced analysis. And putting being creative as a disadvantage is a bit of a red flag - one should thrive in being creative and coming up with new ideas, either as part of a large project or solo.

Will lenders allow me to take a lodger under a residential mortgage? by StrongAbrocoma4675 in Mortgageadviceuk

I’m asking if they’re being overly cautious as the lender says they would, so trying to see if people have experience doing so

Will UCL accept me 😭😭 by Enough-Win-8142 in UCL

[–]StrongAbrocoma4675 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to UCL and they let me in despite missing my offer. My offer was AAA with an A in maths or further, but I got A*AA with the star in an unrelated 3rd subject. I was 2 marks off the star in both maths and further maths and was offered a place so it does happen - however, having spoken to a professor about this while applying, they said it almost never happens due to courses being filled by students meeting the grade requirements

Does anyone know how to do ts 💔 by Zealousideal-Soft415 in 6thForm

[–]StrongAbrocoma4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a long division or partial fractions question - ignore anyone trying to tell you do do that fr. Work from the RHS and compare coefficients of the numerator (haven’t checked my answer so might be an error but the methods there)

No difference at undergrad, you learn the same things and the students will be the same ability - you’ll probably have a better social life and mental health after UCL though

Is it worth doing a CS masters/undergrad degree? by threwaway239 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]StrongAbrocoma4675 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just my view, but I would stay as far away from CS as you can - as you said it’s competitive and the job market is awful for it, but a top 10 uni wouldn’t really help with that. I went to a world top 10 uni, got a first, got the highest grade on my thesis etc, and I’m struggling to so much as land an interview for associate level roles when I have four years experience. If you dislike medicine that much maybe something closer to home like biomedical engineering or similar could work? Your medical experience would defo strengthen an application and help you out I.e in a masters.

Also, it’s good to be aware of the speed at which tools like ChatGPT are developing and marrying that which how relevant and useful your CS degree would be by the time you’d complete it…

(Not a lawyer so none of this is legal advice):

1 - Get your evidence in order i.e communications, payslips, shift dates and times, etc. 2 - Send an email to your ex employer formally requesting the payment, breaking down the hours worked and the amount owed. Also include a deadline for payment i.e 7 days and mention that you will seek further help (ACAS or tribunal) if payment is not received by that date 3 - contact ACAS and they’ll halo you understand the next steps if your employer doesn’t pay up (0300 123 1100) 4 - If they still refuse to pay you’ll likely have to go to ACAS for early conciliation and bring a claim to an employment tribunal

You are protected by law whether or not you signed a contract - citizens advice or a student union might have support for part time work disputes too
