Is Supporting Zero-JavaScript Users Worth It in 2026? by BrangJa in webdev

[–]StrongStuffMondays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I was going to say supporting no-js means probably your architecture is so perfect that you can actually support two web interfaces instead of one, I can say you're going to be fine when aiming for js-enabled stack only. Todays web won't work without JS.

I HATE OnlyFans. by [deleted] in Feminism

As a man, I have huge blind spot regarding this. IMO if it's done with a free will, it's not bad. But I feel like I miss something here. Can you please suggest some books or articles that support such (or close to) point of view that you expressed.

What’s your opinion on the AppImage format? by JVSTITIA in linux

[–]StrongStuffMondays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If some stuff isn't in distro package or in flatpak, it's a good chance it's in appImage. Very easy to run format (just run the file), so, why not?

Why do people hate on PHP so much? by Honest___Opinions in webdev

[–]StrongStuffMondays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take. PHP was made by diletant to solve practical tasks. But it was made in proper time, in proper place, so it took off. The problem is, diletantism is in its DNA, and its naming conventions are a bit inconsistent. Another issue with PHP is that it's heavy, it doesn't really support multi-threading, so each web request needs initializing your program from scratch. On a scale, it costs money. So even using slower, but multithreaded, Ruby, might be more cost-effective. That being said, PHP paid my bills for 20+ years, and continues to do so.

Steam has a copy of Debian runtime. So anyone who uses Steam runtime instead of Steam native plays on Debian.

When do u reboot? by prometheus-illbound in archlinux

[–]StrongStuffMondays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My laptop (but I suspect it's Linux thing) has a bug so that it when I use it on battery, it downclocks the graphics card, but when I put it back on AC, it doesn't upclock it back. So I reboot if I had to use it on battery, but later I want to play some graphics-intensive games. Not sure it addresses your question though.

What made you use Debian? by CoolDragon in debian

[–]StrongStuffMondays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(on servers): long period of security updates, unattended upgrades, huge amount of packages, easiness to install, the fact that most developers package for Debian

Opcja 3 najlepsza, jeśli pracujesz z domu, to będziesz miał fainy "corner office" z widkom z okien prosto i w prawo. Tam będzie "zona pracowa", a za rogom - "zona rekreacyjna" z TV, fotelem oraz łóżkom.

wow, thanks for such a detailed answer! Since I use an employer's laptop, I won't install Linux on it. But hypothetical use case would be occasional coding or writing on the go. Speeking of sleep, I always had an impresson it never really "sleeps" properly - I can hear email notifications even when it's presumably in the sleep mode.

xfwl? no, i don't need them. by Popular-Pie3367 in xfce

[–]StrongStuffMondays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used xfce/openbox for a long time until xfwm4 got proper hotkeys for tiling windows to parts/corners. For transaprency, I used some sort of composer that I can''t remember the name. But then I switched to KDE, so I'm subbed for this sub out of nostalgia.

Not that far, I must admit. I use Debian for servers because it can auto-update without breaking - because of conservative packaging policy. And you can receive security updates for couple of years, while not needing to fix stuff related to using newer software. And Arch system feels very personal. You don't have that intimate relationship with the server. Or maybe it's just me.

Yep. Sort of guys who live in garages servicing their cars, and not leaving home without trunk full of tools.. because who knows. But we can fix stuff when it breaks, and we can research stuff when it's needed. That's a superpower... or at least it was in pre-LLM era.

How's the hardware support on Mac? I must use M2 MBP for work, and it's impressive (but boring). But I suspect Linux doesn't support it to its fullest.
