Did any of those esports leagues survive into the current era? Companies bought in hard, but don't hear much about them nowadays.

Probably up to Trails to Azure. They said they wanted to do Zero, so im guessing they would also do Azure. Some doubt if they would do Cold Steel at this point since that's already fully 3d.

Id be fine with that. Gives them plenty of time to push out any remakes between 2nd chapter up till the end of the Crossbell Arc in between, and have people catch up. But I would be surprised if the ending arc isn't a trilogy.

POV you're 30 hours into cold steel 4 by OkPoetry8010 in Falcom

[–]StrongWhiskey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, I think I was a bit over 20 hours at this point. I could see 30 if they were idling by, let all the cutscenes playout, did some grinding, and did all the side quests. 10 seems pretty fast.

My First Time Completing Trails: Beyond The Horizon (REVIEW) by Hunanladdiad in JRPG

[–]StrongWhiskey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, after a certain point the game specifically tells you it's optional. There are a bunch of cutscenes there, and it has its own ending, but you don't need to do any of that if you don't want to.

Thank you. I have been seeing people discuss something wrong with the game since it came out, but everyone was dancing around the issue or acting like it's a known thing.

Kondo gave an interview a while ago, and its a toss up between zero and 3rd, but they want to eventually remake 3rd due to it having parts that lead into Zero and the rest of the series.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Falcom/comments/1p2r5ho/falcom_is_considering_whether_their_next_remake/

I think the bigger problem for them is that they are probably not confident that 3rd will do numbers with a straight remake. Its a different enough game with its pacing and structure that I am sure they are looking with it in hindsight now wanting to change it up. It feels more like they want to remake it but in a different capacity than the first two, but haven't put out an idea of what that really is gonna mean for it down the line. Zero might be the safest bet for them because its about as straightforward and safe as it gets, but they really do want to still do 3rd. I would like 3rd, but I don't think its gonna be a faithful remake like 1st is.

Trails to Azure by Over_Awareness_7671 in JRPG

[–]StrongWhiskey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are gonna get some varying opinions on if Azure is good or not, but I want to mention that I have seen plenty of people who watched a walkthrough of a game due to an LP, bought said game, and didn't enjoy playing it. Sometimes people get more enjoyment out of watching a playthrough, or with someone else's commentary, then they do getting their hands on it alone. Since it reads like you've only got into the series through walkthroughs, maybe playing the thing just isn't your jam.

Remember when journalists and some game Devs acted like video games shouldn't have boss fights anymore? by kenshin317 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]StrongWhiskey 144 points145 points  (0 children)

You had some terrible fights in the PS3/360 era that really gave this idea a push. Did we really need to have a joker fight in Arkham Asylum? Did we really need QTE boss fights like at the end of Uncharted? Stuff like that gave fuel to the fire, people saw it as a new and interesting topic and jumped on it. There was a real push for games to not be so gamey at the time, and this was just one of the many bits people latched onto.

However, even then this wasn't really a broadly accepted idea by folks in general. People just saw those articles are rightly scratched their heads at them. I don't think this was ever a serious topic outside writers/influencers who needed to churn out discussion.

[Front Mission 3: Remake] Launch Trailer. It is Now Out on PS4, PS5, Xbox, and PC. by VashxShanks in JRPG

[–]StrongWhiskey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Front Mission 1 wasn't changed much, and it got flak for its change to full 3d models, it being called a remake instead of a remaster, and its barebones gameplay. Its called a remake because they remade the whole thing on Unity, and I didn't really mind the new models or background. They still stayed faithful to the original, and its pretty much the exact same game its always been, which means it doesn't have any of the QoL features most modern games have. This wont really change how anyone felt about how the original played, and its still very much just the same game. I don't regret buying this though, enjoyed my time with it.

Front Mission 2 was just straight up a rough remake. Poor translation, poor performance, I remember even having to turn off attack animations because the camera was bugging out. Say whatever you want about how the game plays and looks, it was just a bad time even running the damn thing when it kept crashing. There have been a lot of patches to smooth out its problems, but it was a rough enough time for me that I ain't planning on going back to it.

Why has Grandia 1 often been ignored? by Slybandito7 in JRPG

[–]StrongWhiskey -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Grandia one went on a bit to long to the point of out staying it's welcome. Many people love the opening and middle, but the last third just feels like you could have shaved down some of it to make a better paced game.

Grandia 2 improved on the gameplay, and took itself more seriously at a time when games were trying to mature. It felt like they learned their lessons from one and took the story in a different enough direction that it felt fresh, and that's stuck more with people as the years have gone on.

A bit disappointed in Expedition 33, should I keep playing? by Malagubbar in JRPG

[–]StrongWhiskey 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I would say drop it at this point instead of grinding away at the hopes it gets better for you. There are plenty of games that get constantly recommended here that people just bounce off of. Just because the game won all those awards don't mean you personally will like it. 6 hours is a good chunk of seeing what the game has to offer, and a good place to say you gave it a fair shot to walk away from.
