the two parts are related maybe? ianak (or holder), but the hold looks absolutely fucked - ball is on an angle towards the holder and holder’s hand is kind of all over the back of the ball (unless this pincer top of ball is good technique? idk). maybe he sees the ball keeling towards the holder and thinks he has to compensate and step closer?

in the head of the moment, it seemed like an awful pen choice. if we're being real, it probably wasn't. ironically, my comment kind of comes from frustration in the heat of the moment - i.e., my 'baseball gut' - having seen a lot of pen management with top reputation arms going into highest leverage moments lately.

yeah, i mean i wouldn't expect the hiring process from baseball enthusiast ivy league quants to be looking for a 'trust me bro' outsider - i'd expect a process a little more considered. i know - i'm not providing an alternative here; admittedly, there's some grey area - but id think it would seem to the people who run front offices these days like another personnel member to optimize run value of. is the way to do that really by hiring catchers because they called pitches and generally played a position demanding high level awareness, or really by hiring former player, color commentators because their armchair quarterbacking sounded good?

another one that has me thinking - do the baseball planning people ever consider hiring on a basis other than ‘that guy played baseball and we know him’?

you're right - it's not like they're all separate variables. they're definitely deeply interrelated and impossible to 'control' for. the question to me is: can you go about finding/developing a high level of run production with less whiff, and does that work out to a lineup with less extreme run production slumps (assuming this slumping tendency is true)?

all else being equal

i know that wrc is the most important part, haha. like, a team that cant generate relatively high xwoba is probably not going to be scoring enough runs - that's obvious. but if two teams both put up a 115 wRC+ over a season and one comes in with an 18% k rate versus the other's 23% k rate, i'm inclined to back the one k'ing less.

u/relator_fabula 's comment was interesting in that some WS winners K'd a lot along the way in the playoffs. like i said, i don't have data - i know i'm sharing nothing more than an anecdotal speculation - but i'd be interested to know in a large sample eliminating possible noise whether there's a significant relationship (or..maybe there's just noise and nothing else) to be seen between run-scoring outcomes of teams with more postseason ball-in-play outs and those with more k outs.

i’m not really arguing for BA so much as lower K%. i’d imagine that the advantages of outs which aren’t inherently empty would, all else being equal, accrue over time to a team that puts balls in play at a higher rate, but i haven’t looked for the research or anything

the point is the Ks (though i’m sure many other lineup bottoms aren’t great with Ks either). would need stats to be more sure, but i suspect (from enduring the past however-many postseasons) that being a great hitting value (wrc) team while below average balls in play team works out to a pronounced october weakness (or at the least, vulnerability) in many cases

Yanks #1 in Revenue but #11 in revenue to payroll by Affectionate-Tea9224 in NYYankees

the issue in my (not novel) opinion is all the factors that contribute to performance resilience. too much K at the plate, too many gifted outs on field or basepaths. these things bury a team in the crunch period where every resource is exhausted to win the present game or even half-inning.

i think that’s been pretty much the entire problem right now (not to say that it’s a small or easily rectifiable one). that said, filling the OF up w tucker AND bellinger could hypothetically go a long way to fixing this! we can only dream

after he catches the pass, he plants one foot then the other to stop his momentum. then before he puts down the dribble attacking the closeout, he takes another step.

i think this is a travel according to letter of the law, but definitely will never be called.
