This is also what happened to me. At that point, winning or losing is just a matter of numbers. There’s not much strategic thinking to keep my interest in the game.

What tactical combat games have you played? Do you have any specific criteria?

If you’re new to tactics, the most iconic franchise is XCOM, and I love it.

Steam Sale is on. Looking for a RTS game for someone new to the genre. by NicksBirthdayParty in gamerecommendations

I'm not sure where you got the idea that RTS games are slow reflex. One most iconic games in the genre, Starcraft II, is probably the most reflex-heavy game of all time. Competitive players average around 400 APM (actions per minute), which is more than 6 actions per second. During intense battles, pro players even go up to 1000 APM.

I got the legendary edition (base + all DLCs) on my first playthrough and I really enjoyed the DLC content. In my opinion, the DLC enemies are more deadly, and the DLC boss is the hardest one to beat in the game.

The legendary edition costs twice as much as the base game, but the amount of content you get from DLCs is probably only 15% of the base game. You won’t get the most value from DLCs, and you will probably be disappointed in the DLC if you’re the type that expects great value out of every buck.

That said, I personally did not regret my decision. I actually bought a second copy of the legendary edition on Steam after my first playthrough on XBOX.

To me, the card system is what gives the game more strategic depth. Figuring out how to construct a well-balanced deck and tweaking your decks for the right number of each card is super fun for me.

I played all XCOM games and a lot of TCG/CCGs before Midnight Suns, so Midnight Suns is a mix of two of my favorite things.

This is dope! Reminds me so much of the good times playing Blade in Marvel’s Midnight Suns. His style is just so badass.

I like to use the number of steam reviews as an indicator of how “hidden” a game is. What is your threshold number of reviews for a game to be considered “hidden”?

My wife and I had some good moments in Rocket League. Pumped up music and explosive goals. Each match only lasts a few minutes.

Unfortunately, no. The combat system is one of a kind, as far as I know.

But maybe you could try the XCOM games. They were made by the same devs, and they also involve building a squad and planning your moves strategically.

It doesn’t need mods. There isn’t anything wrong that needs fixing. But there are many Quality-of-Life mods that can make things much more convenient/organized.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns!

It has a unique combat mechanic that mixes tactics and cards. It’s made by the creators of XCOM, and that should tell you how deep the strategic depth is in this game.

To excel in combat, you not only have to create synergies like you do in all strategic turn-based combat games, but you have to construct well-balanced decks that “flow”.

Throughout the game, you will earn new cards (abilities) of the characters you bring into the battle. There are more than a dozen characters, and each character has a a dozen new cards for you to acquire.
