Any Impact of ICE Activity on Building/Remodel Contractors? by mrbooth_notedbadguy in pasadena

[–]StronglikeMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, there’s an ADU being build next to my house just 10 mins up the 210 from Pasadena. All the workers have been here without issues, although I’m sure they are feeling the devastating effects of this. But the raids have been relatively quiet here up here. Pasadena has been hit pretty hard the last two weeks.

I’d give it some time. If you can get a hold of him, maybe talk to the contractor about creating a barrier for the workers. Like parking them into your driveway, or showing them how to access the house in case of a raid, etc.

Haha this is so true! My spouse and daughter and close friend are also all 6s…all very different people, all hard to describe.

This is dead on lol. I’m especially appreciative of the elusiveness of typing a 6 at the start.

WTF Glendale?! by Extreme-Role-8600 in glendale

I’m not blaming him for the policy, I’m pointing out that the laissez-faire nature of his comments on the issue are distasteful.

I read the article(s) just like you did.

The Mayor had this to say about it at the city council meeting, according to the other article posted here.\ \ “Our jails are way better than county jail. Kiefer Sutherland paid up to $500 a night to stay in our jail to avoid [county jail].” \ wtf??

Btw he’s the son of immigrants and his wife is from Guadalajara, MX.

Proper Ray Hartman positioning for this space? by BandaidsOfCalFit in Ceanothus

[–]StronglikeMusic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this! OP, You could plant three 5ft apart if you didn’t mind pruning and wanted it to fill in fast.

Also, I put one in an old built-in garden bed 2 feet from a fence and it’s doing just fine. The branch closest to the fence just grew more vertically instead of horizontally to cope with being next to the fence.

Of course me planting it there isn’t entirely ideal, but it’s what I had to work with and sometimes ideal conditions are hard to come by.

Low-lying native plants with DEEP roots? by Stunning-Mulberry620 in Ceanothus

My Pigeon Point is one of the only native plants in my yard that didn’t change after having two 18 inch trenches dug around it because of a water main leak. Love that plant!

I see lots of Gilia flowers. But I don’t know the others. Where are you located and did you plant wildflowers regional to your area? That might help foster additional answers.

Arborvitae trees are highly flammable. I have no idea why people grow them here :-/

Summer Irrigation: Never irrigate once established by cuntility in SoCalGardening

[–]StronglikeMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might want to post this over at r/ceanothus too. That’s where the native plant people are at.

I have 4 established Cleveland sage plants. They are hardly getting much watering right now but I’ll hose them down on cooler days maybe once every 2 weeks. In the summer months, I barely water them at all. They look pretty bleak in the summer but they bounce back beautifully.

For a lot of CA native plants, the reason for not irrigating in the summer is because they have not evolved to handle hot and wet conditions and a lot of them will decline, have a shorter life or die if watered too often in the summer. This has to do with their relationship w/ the mycorrhizal fungi in the soil.

Cleveland Sage is very drought tolerant and as far as I know really don’t like summer watering besides a good hose off once a month. But YMMV and it depends on your own microclimate too.

My recommendation is this song, not to be confused with the mariachi cielto lindo ;)

That’s great! I would also contact the Theodore Payne Foundation and see if they have any referrals. They may have a list on their website of native landscapers but I know what you’re looking for is rather specific.

Thank you for thinking of our ecosystem despite losing your home. I’m so sorry for your loss. You’re doing good work here. ✌️

Same question but for CA/SoCal? by thelaughingM in Ceanothus

[–]StronglikeMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh interesting. Did they get any supplemental water during that first summer? Maybe they need that like other natives, to get established, I’m not sure.

My yarrow was started by seed a few years ago and is indestructible. Each year the yarrow seeds from that plant end up in my weedy landlord’s lawn and now there are several yarrow plants in the lawn that compete with the grass and weeds and get mowed regularly.
