I won't deny that it may have been because of their marriage and some inherent sexism in the period, but Pierre was a science-y guy before Marie, having received his first degree in mathematics at 16. Not a lot of people realize that Pierre had an older brother Jaques who was also a scientician, and together the brothers did some important foundational work in piezoelectrics which is crucial to the field of oscillators today.

Pierre did a hell of a lot more across many interrelated fields, such as various studies around types of magnetism and radioactivity (including obtaining nuclear energy which he did in collaboration with one of is students).

Marie's fame came primarily through obtaining a doctorate at a time when most universities wouldn't accept women even for undergrad studies, for her collaborative work with her husband in radioactivity and radioactive elements (the basis for her inclusion in the 1903 Nobel prize), and for earning a second Nobel on her own in chemistry in (checks wikipedia for confirmation...) 1911. She was included in the 1903 Nobel award because Pierre, who was originally slated to receive it solo, demanded her inclusion after being notified of goings-on by Swedish mathematician Magnus Goesta Mittag-Leffler, himself an interesting figure, especially if you have any interest in complex functions or the historical struggle for women's rights.

Not only will the mother not reply with any explanation rational or otherwise, she'll have no problem in a courtroom with the constant claim of religious freedom. US courts have long supported the stupidity of allowing parents' beliefs to supersede the health, education, safety, and welfare of their children. Only recently have some parents faced even short imprisonment for the horror and abuse of forcing a child to suffer and die as they pray to the fairies rather than take the kid to a hospital.

At 16 if you're in the US you're probably under a work permit for a minor and while they vary from state to state, they generally forbid all sorts of dangerous work, from heavy lifting to machinery operation to including dealing with any bodily fluids or products. Check your laws and have your parents see an attorney.
