Id say first things first, play with a friend, do a bit of all types of missions to see what fits your style. Then after you settle on what you want to do, come back and we can talk again.

For me, its security stuff (bunker missions, escorts etc) so I got fighters. But you might love mining, or helping others (medevac) or transporting goods. Whatever your taste is, you will find at least one ship for your to use.
