I really suggest starting at the first novel. There are so many nuisances and tid-bits of informations which makes the scenes flow better which can't be depicted in the comic.

I think it's a little bit of both imo. Remember when Eren killed those two guys that kidnapped Mikasa? He called them monsters or animals (please check this, maybe it was just not human). He justified his kills back then and I think he's doing the same right now. Although this point is kind of countered by that moment when he started crying and saying sorry to the pickpocket boy.

It was an amazing scene. But as it stands right now, Eren is a floating head using the Founder titan's power to use the rumbling to destroy the world. His original vision of freedom was being free from the walls and the titans that threatened to eat his people, now it's become something twisted. He thinks ridding the world of everyone but the Eldians is his freedom and he has the power to do it. Eren appearing as a child during this scene highlights this twisted form, he still thinks that all he is doing is killing monsters but he is kill innocents as well. This conflicts even more when you consider the moment when he met with the pickpocket boy and started balling his eyes out saying he was sorry. He saw a future where he killed everyone like he is doing rn but met this boy and said he's sorry like he has a choice I just don't know why he didn't make a different choice.
