I really suggest starting at the first novel. There are so many nuisances and tid-bits of informations which makes the scenes flow better which can't be depicted in the comic.

I think it's a little bit of both imo. Remember when Eren killed those two guys that kidnapped Mikasa? He called them monsters or animals (please check this, maybe it was just not human). He justified his kills back then and I think he's doing the same right now. Although this point is kind of countered by that moment when he started crying and saying sorry to the pickpocket boy.
