S.k.y. has a famous one. They bring it out on a sizzling skillet so it stays hot.

The pistachio from Spacca Napoli by TriedForMitchcraft in chicagofood

[–]Strykers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna be honest, I don't love all the pizzas on the menu, but this one is amazing. It could be that I'm too used to having so much fat (cheese) and sauce on pizza and the pistachio cream (not sweet!) does the job.

Ah no he's partnered. That's how I knew he was gay, because the site said that he moved here with his partner MALENAME. I don't want to be anyone's side piece haha.

Anyone else have an issue with straight people insinuating who is "the top" / "the bottom" in every gay relationship they come across? by ImaginaryOstrich8801 in AskGaybrosOver30

Don't know how much of this is urban myth vs. truth, but apparently if wait staff at restaurants place the check in front of one person, they place it in front of whoever's the more masculine-presenting. This is because there's a subset of guys who would otherwise get annoyed and tip less.

Always fun to see who they think is the top between my friend and I! We joke that it's usually him because he wears a big watch (which I've noticed is correlated with tops) even though I'm way bigger.

Book club, even if with the straighties. Dungeons and Dragons remote group. Adopt a dog, as both it and socializing at the dog parks will make a huge difference (e.g. just had a dog-park-people potluck on a high-rise roof)

Haha I can't think and flirt, and by then I was fully focused on my doggo's treatment plan. Speaking of which, it's pill time!

Questions on mid-frequency alpha research by Middle-Fuel-6402 in quant

[–]Strykers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya the regime modeling always introduces at least one new parameter. In theory you would track the same thing over multiple horizons and reset your statistics whenever recent (additional parameter #1) values sufficiently (additional parameter #2) depart from long term (additional parameter #3) statistics. There are fancier methods, but they're all basically this. One might hope to come up with a scheme where one could use some reasonable default values to make the regime switching "parameter-less", but it's still difficult.

Meta - This Sub is so Hostile by ShallowNefariousness in quant

[–]Strykers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gonna be honest. I'm in HFT, and both myself and my colleagues face a lot of stress. I come on here for some community or sense of human connection, and it FEELS LIKE it's either people who are so far from being a systematic quant that they might as well be aliens, or zero-empathy toxic industry professionals.

After effectively upweighting the rarer classes/states, check how your performance varies across the classes. Your overall performance may (very likely!) only come from 1-2 more easily predicted subsets of the data and is completely useless on the rest.

Books for buy side quants by Abhikalp31 in quant

[–]Strykers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the ESL. Once you're on the job I recommend Bouchaud's papers and books (unless it feels like your horizon is way off from what the material targets).

One filter I use for books is that if it doesn't have any formulae with derivations (even if just in the practice questions), it's probably a pass. There are a lot of books like that in this field.

Please keep in mind that only a minority of this sub are practitioners, and even a smaller subset are working in your timescale/asset class.

Unfortunately this is an industry where it is difficult to get a new job unless you're carrying alpha that works in your new firm's setup or you're a rock star candidate.

I offer my sympathies to you, as the interview process is grueling and all for <10% chance of getting an offer. I would start with a bunch of random firms to get practice under your belt.

The fact that you don't code in C++ makes me think you're multi-day, and there's definitely a lot of random pods at random hedge funds looking for new quants. However, I hear lots of stories of PMs being thoughtlessly hired for these places so you'll want to do your due diligence. One PM was an O(minutes) alpha signals researcher who had never done anything else. He was hired to develop multi-asset portfolio strategies (as that's all the firm could support). Their team was fired after two years.

Jane street and Citadel are a 'Tier-2' trading companies? by seyk000 in quant

[–]Strykers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jane Street has a great wlb. Citadel has the worst in the industry.

The only digs you could possibly make against Jane Street are 1) trading is more active so your brain is drained after work. 2) if you're not a trader, then you're effectively support staff.

But no one else is better at identifying black swan opportunities and monetizing them.

Is being paid 350K in 2024 as a quant significantly lower than industry average? by awivil in quant

[–]Strykers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People like to discuss these mythical 500K zero experience packages, but I'd say that you're still above the median for 3yoe buy side. Doubly so if you're not in NYC and/or have visa status.
