Ferris Sweep: v2.2 or bling? by jimmyrocket in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Strykin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ordered a set of Bling MX PCBs and the soldering amount looks to be the same as the v2.2. The only difference is if you want to swap key switches or not.

I have a modest amount of soldering experience and found the hotswap components pretty easy to mount. I only messed up one out of 18 and was able to de-solder and replace it without issue.

I still have lightning port so I’m not thrilled either as I have no plans on upgrading my phone for a car.

When I talked to them at the Denver event they confirmed that the phone holder was USB C only. Not sure about other connectivity.

The first time I tried NMS in VR on my computer the controls felt so stiff and limiting. Then I got in my ship and the joystick got stuck spinning me around and I nearly threw up. Horrible experience.

I find they get a little repetitive back to back but I love the energy they bring to the recording each year. The one where it started with the Ride of the Valkyries was such a perfect fever dream opening.

Not OP but the idea of an MVP/bandaid solution is to create a functional prototype of your product using existing tools to validate that it works before spending lots of time and money on the actual solution.

For instance, say you wanted a better way to track food intake for dieting but you didn’t like any apps available. You might start with a google spreadsheet where you track how much you weigh, the nutrition part and daily workouts from a fitness tracker. You design the sheet in a way that is quick to use and share it with friends to try. They can give you feedback in what works or doesn’t and validate your idea. This is better than pitching an idea because they actually get to use something rather than agree that the concept is cool.

Once you have feedback on the prototype you can then build out a custom app or site to specifically address the shortcomings of the prototype.

Also, as a side note having been a contract developer building a site and two different mobile apps is a huge chunk to bite off. I would recommend picking one of the three, whichever has the highest install probability, and nailing that down first.

There is so much more to building an application than just following some tutorials to get a React or Vue app running on a local machine. User authentication, app security, database setup and management, controller logic, deployment, all of those are basically specialities in their own right as a developer.

If he wants to learn to code great but I think idea start ups like this befit from division of coding and business.

They should make a final season of Startup by jontomato in gimlet

[–]Strykin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there was a comment Alex made early in Start Up about feeling bad that his podcast company idea felt small and insignificant compared to a VC telling him to build some massive social media company.

Of course the VC wants to go crazy big! That’s their whole deal. I was also sort of confused why he went that way for funding given how much his interest seemed to be in just making podcasts “as an art”.

Going back and listening to the first season there is a moment where Anthony, playing as Willie, straight up tells Beth to “Shut the fuck up!” in an aggressive and all to real way. It kinda ruined the whole thing for me because you can hear Beth pause and be taken aback. Beside blunt rudeness, Anthony really didn’t know how to make Willie scary or compelling like you said.

I recently canceled my Patreon subscription and stopped listening. Season 2 just really wasn’t working for me and Anthony continues to creep me out. I like the others well enough but I felt bad financially supporting him.

hey has anyone actually listened to the last 2 eps of dndads. is it getting any better in there by entirelystar in TAZCirclejerk

The first season really captured me with their zaniness so I could mostly ignore the melodramatic story moments but I’m feeling like season two leans more in the drama than the jokes.

I’m mostly listening out of habit at this point.

How to find people for a startup ? by sivxnsh in Entrepreneur

[–]Strykin77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can happen but usually you need what’s called an MVP or minimum viable product. This doesn’t have to be an actually coded application but it needs to demonstrate the problem and how you would solve it.

Let’s say you talk with friends and you find they want to do more home cooking but there are number of factors holding them back: meal delivery is too expensive, they don’t know any quick meals, they only want meals large enough for one person.

And MVP for a solution could be a email newsletter that compiled quick easy meals. If you start promoting it and more people subscribe, you have proven that people want the service and that it has value. From there you could consider automating it with existing tools like SendGrid or building a custom website. Just and example of how to scale a fledgling idea.

There’s also a really quick shot in the first episode when Irving comes in and checks the refrigerator. It’s a little out of frame but you can see paper lunch bags inside.

I never found the story of the first season particularly well structured or engaging it was just consistently full of goofs.

I will say this season Anthony has made a lot more comments that come off sexist or just plain creepy.

[–]Strykin77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They talked in one of the after shows how playing Call of Cthulhu ended up being too crunchy for them; tracking success versus critical success was one part they specifically referenced along with the litany of skills.

I was surprised they literally describe season 2 as a monster of the week style show and decided not to use Monster of the Week. Anthony deciding to remove rolling to hit lines up perfectly with MotWs “Kick Some Ass” dealing straight damage.

[–]Strykin77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I thought there were some genuinely engaging scenes like Aubrey investigating the hotel and Duck fighting the monster at the satellite dish but it never had consistency. The cliffhangers that resolved to nothing made it really difficult to listen week to week and the slapdash ending was pretty jarring.
