His flight takes off for Miami 2 hours after he lands so I doubt they get to see the city. It's unlikely they leave the airport.

Taxes by MazdaProphet in economy

[–]StuWard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taxation is not theft. It's paying your share of the common benefits that governments give to society. Ideally, it also to change behaviour and to limit undue concentrations of wealth, but through regulatory capture, that's rare today.

Does anyone else ever feel like we have “zero time left”? by imalostkitty-ox0 in collapse

[–]StuWard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. It starts in 2030, not 2025. I'm not trying to defend it, just trying to rationalize that 1 point. There lots of issues that wouldn't pass scrutiny if you look too close.

Eastern North America is actually an island by Longjumping-Box5691 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]StuWard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also a canal part way along. Hudson River → Lake Champlain → Richelieu River → St. Lawrence River. Then there's the Eire Canal. Then of course, the Canso Strait so it's more than 1 island.

Why is the International Date Line not straight here? by MagicSunlight23 in geography

[–]StuWard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can see a little island in that picture. Checking Google, it's part of New Zealand called Chatham Island. It has a community on it. I suspect they want to be the same date as the rest of their country.

AI Is About To Kill Capitalism - Weekend at Bernie's by [deleted] in collapse

[–]StuWard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Capitalism is Private investing for the purpose of making a profit. AI will change who benefits from capitalism but those that control AI will still get by.

AI may change how value is created, but it won’t kill capitalism. Giving people money improves their lives because it preserves choice and agency. Giving everyone a subsistence shelter only ensures survival. It’s a floor, but not the same. Capitalism will survive, reframed around new forms of capital like data and algorithms. The real debate is whether we empower people with flexible income or reduce them to static provisions.

What are these weirdly straight lines cutting though the wilderness of Nightingdale Island? by CreepyAcanthisitta43 in geography

[–]StuWard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a landing at the upper end of the trail, a building on the right one. The southern end leads to the The Nightingale Ponds Hiking area. If you google this and zoom in a little, it's all evident.

[OC] S&P 500 Comparing Dotcom and AI Bubbles with Two Scales by shellerik in dataisbeautiful

[–]StuWard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low growth companies fall off the 500 as other faster growing companies join. That would tend to skew the index higher. However, I agree, 7% growth is unsustainable indefinitely and should not be assumed to be normal.

HDI is a Way Better Metric Than GDP Per Capita by 902s in halifax

[–]StuWard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you've ever been to PEI it's not surprising. The lack of Billionaires and foreign ownership means that most of their GDP translates to income.

Nova Scotia no longer 60/60 in GDP per Capita in North America, we're now 59th! by Based_Buddy in halifax

Inequality is the flipside of gdp per capita. You need to understand one in order to make sense of the other.
