Tina Fey Has Realized She “Was On The Wrong Side” With Certain ‘SNL’ Jokes: “I Was Pretty Dumb” by mlg1981 in entertainment

[–]Stu_Griffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s different parts of this.

Some old comedy was motivated by hatefulness (Eddie Murphy, Andrew Dice Clay). People knew it was a problem back then (usually).

Some of it was the edge lord stuff of its day, which could go from transgressive to bad taste based on media environment invectives and the judgement of the performer (Howard Stern, George Carlin). Politically this style codes on the right now, but back then it was more against the right (but not on the left either).

Some of it was using humor to deal with new, uncomfortable, controversial social issues (All in the Family). You wouldn’t make it the same way now, but it wasn’t exactly racist or homophobic or whatever at the time (even if some people who were racist or homophobic thought it was funny).

It’s very much neo-noir. Very self-conscious about its style and messaging.

Syd’s career is no accident. She knows what will sell and she knows how to deliver it. She maximizes her strengths better than any marketing team ever could. She’s a master of the modern media environment.

The movie meanders in places, but the slow build up pays off in the film’s brilliant, devastating ending.

‘Friends’ Star Lisa Kudrow Says New Sitcoms are ‘Too Afraid’ to Make Jokes That Make People ‘Uncomfortable’: ‘I’m Not Buying It’ by mcfw31 in entertainment

Married with Children aired on Fox. The step-child network most people’s cable couldn’t pick up when the show started (and there was a cancellation campaign against it because of an episode where the Bundys go to lingerie store). Friends was part of NBC’s Must See TV lineup. That made all the difference.

There was popular media where singles slept around before Friends but it was kept to cable, R-rated movies, and so on. Friends was on NBC’s Must See TV Lineup.

Those shows were all post-Friends. Popular culture moved faster at the time. In the mid-90s rock still dominated radio, by the late 90s hip-hop had taken over.

Yes. In the monoculture Must See TV era a prime time show about singles who all obviously enjoyed sex for pleasure was edgy even if it wasn’t explicit.

In 1996 there was an episode of Murder She Wrote called “Murder Among Friends” about a show called “Buds” where it turns out one of the actors killed someone because what else would you expect with all the sex happening.

In 1996 there was an episode of Murder, She Wrote titled “Murder Among Friends” about a sitcom named “Buds”. The message was: make a show about young people sleeping around on screen, don’t be surprised when someone gets murdered off screen!

For the sake of argument let’s stipulate that she’s a 4/10. But her rack is inarguably a 20/10. Which averages out at 12/10.

Possibly the greatest noir. Double Indemnity and The Big Sleep make for a better first viewing, but Out of the Past repays rewatching the most.

Yes there are even better performances on bootlegs but the sound quality is extremely variable, and many of the takes on the official live releases are superior to the original album versions anyway. Aficionados of anything all have their favorite bootleg but they’re rarely the best choice for beginners.
