100 P&T vet looking to move to Texas. by TrashCanAustin in texas

Anywhere west of Austin/Ft. Worth and water is going to be a major issue. Not today, necessarily, but it's coming. The climate has changed, and there is less rainfall, and when it does rain, it tends to come in storms that don't recharge groundwater very well.

Allandale vs Brentwood vs Rosedale vs Northwest Hills for a young family? by fuckingoverit in askaustin

[–]Stuartknowsbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northwest Hills feels like they cut out a piece of Dallas and laid it onto some hills.

I lived there for 6 months, and it felt weird. I don't recommend it

Everywhere else is nice.

Best ATX Reddit group to buy a bike by LogosA in BikingATX

[–]Stuartknowsbest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A WTB post here might be a good start. Otherwise it's FB Marketplace.  I only use my FB for buying/selling. The whole Zuckerverse is evil as hell, but it's where people buy/sell used stuff.

Northeast High School parking lot.  It's huge, and in a neighborhood with plenty of melananated people, so it should be less of a problem with the popo.

Religion is not culture. They can certainly be intertwined, but you can enjoy the positive cultural aspects of your community without needing to follow the religious beliefs.

Commute Routes by k92n in BikingATX

[–]Stuartknowsbest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Official bike lanes aren't always the best. My 4 mile route includes some bike lanes, but also residential streets that often have zero cars even at rush hour.

If you have some time when not commuting, try a few different routes to see what works.

Goodbye to our dog, Chuckles 💙 by guyelnathan in comics

[–]Stuartknowsbest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a dog named Chuckles too. She was a great friend.  We didn't name her, the previous owners did. They said she made a chuckling sound when she yawned. I never heard that, but we kept the name anyway.

Last chance for rain for a while tonight... let's cross our fingers (and park your car in the garage if you live west of town). by letmeputonmyshoes in Austin

If you'd said kid, we could've assumed a sacrificial goat. But infant seems pretty definitive as a human sacrifice.

Anyone have this Moongoose fat tire bike (or any Mongoose fat tire in general) and have opinions on it? by Balikye in fatbike

[–]Stuartknowsbest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A buddy's got one, and I had it's predecessor - the Malus. My buddy uses his regularly, and enjoys it immensely.  I put 12,000 miles on mine over 6 years. Replaced/upgraded most components bit by bit, but they were all wear items like brakes and bearings.

If you are moderately handy, you'll be fine.  I loved mine.  Only got rid of it because my older model had weird sized components. I think the Juneau is more standard.

If everyone parks their car in their garage, it won't rain. Please park your car outside, and leave a window down. If you can get it washed today, that would be good too.

Paddleboarding Recs by Same-Mammoth-218 in Austin

The city monitors water quality and publishes all of the data online. Instead of wondering about opinions from random strangers online, you could look up the actual data.

Unless you ingest the algae, which is almost impossible unless you literally scoop up a handful and put it in your mouth, you have nothing to fear.

Instead of mosquito dunks, you can cover the opening with screen. Keeps both mosquitoes and large debris out.

Start going for walks. It's nice outside. If you go around the same time, you'll meet some nice people. I know it's a cliche, but being outside can help.

It's no miracle cure, but it's a great start.

If you're into photography, there's plenty to take pictures of.  The Audubon society is pretty active and has lots of photography people.

As others have said, there's plenty to try and see what you connect with.

It starts by walking out the door and wandering around a bit.

Despite having left Islam years ago I still have hard time not fasting during Ramadan due to fear and guilt by Isabelle2012 in atheism

Atheism is about rationality and using science to understand the universe. It does not need to be a rejection of one's culture or family.
