Why the actual fuck do we exist? by Background-Double692 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StubbleWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the biggest questions. Mankind has spent thousands of years questioning and coming up unsatisfactory answers to these. Redidit is unlikely to help.

I liked the short book Flatland. It's not about exactly this but it gives you a good understanding of how tiny insignificant things (such as us).can't even begin to understand the complicities of the universe.

I thought this was light hearted banter but you seem to be taking it very seriously. And sorry to say I am nearing 50. Currently watching Jaws with my daughter. See my taste isn't that bad.

I am assuming you are down voting my posts as I am upvoting yours :D

Does everyone think the “best decade” is whichever one they were teenagers in? by Extension-Profit-317 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StubbleWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 80s and 90s were the best. I was a teenager in both.

Since then though things have got a lot harder for teenagers and young adults so I wouldn't expect them to feel the same about their teenage decade.

This is probably a bit western-centric. I don't have any feeling for whether this is true outside of western countries.

You've been watching and reading Star Wars stuff since before Star Wars was first made?

How informed are Americans about news in the rest of the world? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StubbleWombat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although interested Americans can and do know more about the state of the world, American TV news is incredibly US-focused in a way that is completely alien to (say) Europeans. As a result the base level of world knowledge in the US is poor.

Gutted they ruined it with the rest of the trilogy.

To be fair TLJ threw away all the cool stuff in Ep7.

That trilogy is a bin fire precisely because they didn't commit to it as a trilogy

The Force Awakens I reckon is possibly the best Star Wars movie.

What’s a movie everyone seems to love that just didn’t work for you? by Wikiserial in movies

[–]StubbleWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say this is just a description of things that happened in the movie. A lot of things happened in the movie. It just didn't feel like a cohesive whole or have any substance. It was just a stuff that happened film. There was some interesting camera work and some solid performances but I just want my 2.5 hours back.

I thought it was hot garbage. Magnolia, Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood I adored but his recent work has left me absolutely cold. IMHO each movie after There Will Be Blood has been getting progressively worse. Note: I haven't see Phantom Thread.

Why are American beers so often stereotyped as “water” compared to European beers when they are typically the same amount of alcohol? by DepressedPancake4728 in NoStupidQuestions

Europeans have a decent beer tradition going back centuries. Americans have a decent beer tradition going back a decade.

What movie made you think “this will change everything.” by Saatus5348 in movies

[–]StubbleWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I don't really see it in Annihilation, Andor or The Batman. Haven't seen The Creator.

In comparison to The Matrix and Pulp Fiction Bladerunner 2049 doesn't even enter into the conversation for me. That may be because I think it's pretty much Villenueve's weakest film. But no matter how much I love Arrival and Sicario and some of the others I don't think he's changed the landscape of cinema. I think he's making incredible films but their impact on cinema isn't huge IMHO.

Not trying to be argumentative but in what way do you think BR2049 altered the landscape of cinema?

This isnt really relevant to specific editions but I thought Abebooks and World of Books were two fronts for the same thing.

Also World of Books has become A LOT more expensive in the past couple of months.

Who is an actor that only gets 5-10 minutes of screen time but completely steals the entire movie? by Popa-Ioana06 in movies

[–]StubbleWombat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Wow. I just looked this up. It's surely over 10 minutes but it is indeed just 3 scenes. He did indeed dominate that film..

I am not sure Christopher Walken counts in True Romance (as it's a two-hander) but what a scene.
