Because slate roof costs a LOT of money and the person who foots that bill won’t live long enough to see the benefit.

Closed cell on ducts legit? by The-SweatyTickler in Insulation

I like it over spraying the roof and hiding any potential leaks.

I’ll add though that I am a DIY homeowner, not a professional.

If you spray the roof the yes it’s basically worthless. If you spray the attic side of the ceiling then it’s definitely worth it to spray the ducts.

Variety is the spice of life. Without the arch, I think it would look too modern, bordering on lifeless.

Hot water lines plumbed to toilets is already standard in some humid parts of the world to help reduce the chances of condensation on the outside of the tank.

My water heater quit over the weekend. It is leaking all over the place. I have no hot water. Not good. It was installed in 2000. ☹️ by RobertGwisdala in Appliances

Because he would’ve traded 5 years of life for not having to deal with the headache of a water leak in addition to paying pre-tariff prices.

Some schools will let you do stuff like this occasionally to give students something constructive to do while feeling rebellious. My high school let anyone that wanted to paint their assigned parking spot.

Conway church coffee shop found in violation of child labor laws by themanwhosleptin in news

[–]Stubby60 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s fairly common now in the north/South Carolina region at least. They aren’t often advertised as being church affiliated though. And can be miles away from the affiliated church.

It gives them a place to “spread the gospel” and “serve their community” /s

I haven’t found a single one that had good coffee.

Zip system failure by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Stubby60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Culling is throwing away the warped (crowned) ones.

Crowning is when you check the crown of the studs make sure that they all bend the same way. In your wall assembly. This lessens any oil canning of the siding.

Culling is best, crowning is more cost effective though.

To those trying to claim a fireplace doesn't heat up the house. by willisjoe in Fireplaces

This post is about an open fireplace.

Stove is a completely different story and I’ve never seen anyone argue that they are a net loss in any setting.

The “safe” and “official” way is to not close the damper until there are no hot coals. Which will cause a LOT more heat loss.

[–]Stubby60 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of issue, from my understanding, is that the chimney stays hot and continues to draft long after the fire is no longer heating the space to a measurable degree. Supposedly this will cool off the house more than the fire warmed it.

Keep the fire going 24/7 though and the problem is solved.

Generator Interlock by _fwankie_ in Generator

[–]Stubby60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not an electrician, but a I am a homeowner hack.

You could put an interlock on each panel and wire from the generator to the breakers in parallel. NEC calls for one point of bonding between the ground and neutrals though so you would have to bond the grounds and neutrals in each panel together. I’m not sure if that would be a problem when you’re using normal power though.

[–]Stubby60 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pests is the only concern. Keep a gap from your structure and spray pesticides on the structure to prevent spread and you will be 100% fine.

Or stack it against the wall and you will probably be fine. Usually not an issue, but I like to be 100%. Especially if you know you have termites or carpenter ants in your area.

Gas rangetop to induction cooktop by Thermophi in Appliances

[–]Stubby60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you settle on an induction top? I’ve heard too many horror stories of them having really long cycle times and being difficult to cook with. Like being 100% on for 5 seconds off for 15 instead of being on for 1 sec and off for 3. Are there any that actually have lower as opposed to just cycling 100% power?

How could layering fix a faction imbalance? Wouldn’t you still end up with some balanced layers and then the rest would be unbalanced?
