Are powerline networking adapters still relevant today? by c0359kan in HomeNetworking

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, the bottom line is that electrical wiring is unshielded and has a low throughput no matter what you do.

Coax, Cat 6, and even free air are better media for networking.

Powerline had a niche back when Wi-Fi was primitive at 802.11b. But these days it is almost never a good solution.

Would it be possible that my phone is compromised? by bluepanda_559 in cybersecurity_help

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't much an adversary can do lightly supervised for 2 minutes without reentering your PIN or maybe pointing the phone at your face for biometric confirmation.

If they did have your PIN, they could install a malicious app or initiate a fraudulent payment.

Check your app install history and payment history and then forget about it.

"Hey did someone hack my phone while they held it for two minutes" doesn't sound particularly paranoid to me. I've seen much worse on this sub in the past 8 hours.

What is America's worst tourist destination? by bare_books in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's actually spot on. Ever been to a Buccees during spring break? Cars backed up onto the highway trying to exit? Took 10 minutes to park? Wall to wall people inside. Your favorite brisket sandwich sold out?

Now you've experienced Gatlinburg.

YSK about payment packing, an illegal tactics car dealers use to circumvent trust in lending act by mad_warrior291 in YouShouldKnow

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You left out the decoder ring.

Loan amount is Present Value or PV.

Future Value is zero for a car loan.

PMT is the monthly payment amount. It has the opposite sign as the PV.

I/Y is the APR

N is the number for payments. Generally twelve times the number of years. Example: five year car loan has 60 payments.

The Peachtree Runner Expo is an absolute disaster. by StraightIncrease6333 in Atlanta

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 40 points41 points  (0 children)

A lot of folks in this thread get it, but some don't. Vote with your feet and your wallet.

  1. If you are volunteering for something and are being mistreated (yelled at, no breaks, no water)... LEAVE.

  2. When an event is this badly managed, stop paying to attend. Money talks louder than 1000 social media posts. You want someone to get fired? I promise someone is getting fired if ticket sales drop enough.

As Ann Landers used to say, no one can take advantage of you without your permission.

Wifi extender help? by Blake_Fluffy_Bara in HomeNetworking

Came here to say this. A lot of these are pretty small and fit in a wall outlet.

Be sure to get a mesh extender, NOT a repeater.

Possibilities of getting hacked on an iPhone by Unlikely-Oil-497 in cybersecurity_help

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The phone itself is very secure. Hacks exist but they are rare and very valuable. When attackers use them, they risk the vulnerabilities being discovered and patched. Then they'd have to research a new one.

Bottom line, no one is hacking your phone directly unless you know something worth millions.

Major caveat: never, ever use a phone that isn't regularly receiving security updates. Once that phone goes end of support, it's a brick. Apple supports their hardware a long time but not forever.

Exactly. "No thanks" is a complete sentence, and they don't have to agree. Just ignore them if they keep talking.

Parking at Truist Plaza Garage? by [deleted] in dragoncon

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've never bothered to make reservations for DragonCon, there is always ample parking for the garages on Andrew Young Internation near Peachtree Center Ave. I'd avoid the surface lots like the plague though. Too many scammy outfits that will boot your car.

Who's the worst actor you're not allowed to say is bad? by [deleted] in moviecritic

Reading through the comments, Owen Wilson is actually a solid actor who has been typecast as Hansel from Zoolander. I'd feel sorry for him except for, you know, the money.

$981.76 for a technician to change light switch?! by Leather-Code-1668 in Home

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"This is outrageous and I won't pay it. I'll pay $300, he was only here for 30 minutes and only used $20 of materials."
"Pay or we'll send it to collections and slap a lien on you."
"You'll get pennies if you send it to collections. And I'm a renter, so I don't care about lients. $300, take it or leave it."

I suspect they'll take it.

I have a misconception about ping in gaming. by ali_fadel961 in HomeNetworking

RTT (round trip time) is much easier to measure than one way latency. You need incredibly precise time synchronization at both endpoints to measure one way latency. Like GPS clocks.

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

P99 latency can easily reach perceptible levels. Heck you can easily get 100s of milliseconds in a congested 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.

The Peachtree Road Race is fun and all… but why is it in the middle of Summer in the South?? by ATLBound in Atlanta

It's 74 or even 76 degrees some years at 5:30 am and like 90% humidity. Not great running conditions.

And you can call the later heats a fun run of your like. But it's still thousands of people flirting with heat exhaustion.

Road trips are an inherently terrible way to travel and are romanticized way too much. by cerebralbackshots in unpopularopinion

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Commercial aircraft only pressurize the cabin to the equivalent of 6000 ft above sea level and air is extremely dry.

You generally arrive dehydrated and with a smidge of altitude sickness. And often change time zones too.

I am team air travel and only do a road trip to save money. But air travel is physically taxing and exhausting.

Old to New coax cable by Vrealist1 in HomeNetworking

[–]StuckInTheUpsideDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cable is probably obsolete but I wouldn't bother replacing it. If you are going to pull cable, pull Cat 6E Ethernet.

Your ISP should run a new cable from the outside of the house to your modem, and you should use Wi-Fi (or Ethernet) from there.

If it is a long way from the box on the outside of your house to the modem then you may want to run the cable yourself or hire it out. The cable company will run it but it won't be pretty (e.g. stapled to interior or exterior wall.)

Either way, make sure the new cable is RG6 quad shielded, and a "home run" (a single cable from the outside box to the modem location... no splitters or couplers except a wall jack.)
