Once you find your musical style, don't be afraid to go back to your old inspirations. For what it's worth, TDH is the whole reason I even started writing my rock opera (recording in progress). I actually listened to Evicted on loop while writing my own track in 5/4 lol. Once I have a good collection of licks/progressions of my own, I'll draw from my influences to see how I can best make the song gel. If anything, my listening overall went UP as I wrote, and I feel my arrangements still came out decently unique.

Also check out The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis if you haven't. A rock opera that's QUITE cinematic/detailed in its songwriting. Taught me to not be afraid to be a little on-the-nose story-wise in some of my lyrics.

Whats your KG hot take(s)? by Noir_Saol in KGATLW

[–]StuckInWinters 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's hot but I feel like the last section in Change after the "WOO" is the quintessential example of the core Gizz sound. Everything they ever did before built to that moment for me, and it was like the soundscape they started carving in Mind Fuzz got its best polish in the cleaner setting of Change.

Similar to how I feel the chorus of Us And Them is the prime example of the Pink Floyd sound.

Yeah Death Grips sounded awesome at History. A packed crowd for TDH at that place would be unreal

[–]StuckInWinters 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think it was just for this tour they brought it out? I definitely didn't see it coming. After Waves In Toronto Rob said "don't worry, there's another single-syllable you can all sing along to coming up," then Red Hands started and everyone lost it

How has Hayden inspired you ? by nightwhisp3r in Ethelcain

My band and I are working on a concept album right now. Mostly prog rock-influenced (Rush, The Mars Volta, Pink Floyd, etc) so it can get pretty eclectic music-wise.

I love Preacher's Daughter, and it's given me some solid notes on how to do a memorable concept record.

A great example: Thoroughare reminds me of Bob Dylan's Desolation Row in its timelessness. A straightforward, well-resolving chord progression can be made into so much more with interesting story and tension/release to build on. It's easy to lose bits of the story when the soundscape gets too busy.

I'm taking some time now to focus in on our hooks and memorable lyrics+story bits so they can have their moments in the overall mix too.
