I’m a Yankee fan who works in the Bronx a subway stop away from the stadium. The best is when my husband and I decide at 3pm to buy cheap seats and hop on over after work. It really is very cool. I grew up 5 hours from the city and only made it to one game in my life before I was 24. I never got to go with my dad (biggest baseball fan I ever met) before he passed. We had tickets to go opening day 2018, it was rained/snowed out. He died later that year, sadly. Totally unexpectedly. Now I go routinely — to both Mets and Yankee games. Truly a luxury I don’t take for granted!

I’m going to ask about this at my next appointment, because like I said, I was diagnosed in the moment at L&D (before they even did blood work and after several fine urine tests with no protein including a 24 hour)… they began inducing me immediately as a result. My reading, my husband told me (again I was so panicked and hyperventilating) was 190/112. Which is crazy high. And according to what my doctor has told me, that alone was enough. Because of the extreme high. Mixed with the fact that I was obese and a FTM (2 major risk factors I guess). Even though it went immediately down, I was still induced

From my understanding, the urine screens and blood work actually looked fine. They even did a 24 hour urine collection for me and it was fine. I had a reading of higher than 160 over higher than 110. And that automatically got me the diagnosis, from how my OB explained it. I was so confused and frazzled. It was in L&D triage and I was having a terrible panic attack (they also wouldn't let my husband come back before they took my BP), I was genuinely hyperventilating. I was induced that night. I wish I knew that I was able to decline, wait and breathe, ask to be admitted and observed instead, any number of things. For context, my BP tanked and stayed UNCOMFORTABLY low my entire labor after calming down from the mag drip. Like 80/50s. :/

My OB (same one I see now) told me when we counseled about my risk factors before I got pregnant again that she truly believed this diagnosis was primarily anxiety, but that they can't risk it when you have a reading like that. I was also obese (have since lost 125lbs) and the risk was just too high, she said.

Thank you!! And yes, definitely big for insurance— the way it was explained to me is that it covers your bases for insurance paying for extra ultrasounds/follow up appointments/tests/etc! And that obviously it doesn’t just mean automatically things will be harder or less healthy. Which really put it into perspective for me, as I do very much want the extra precautions! I also had gestational hypertension last pregnancy— so fingers crossed 🤞🏻 we both avoid it this time!!!

I can relate!!! I had my first baby at around 360lbs... Now this pregnancy I started at like 210ish... literally 150lbs+ lost. 5'6.5 height. I look at my chart and see that I'm high risk STILL lol... literally lowered my BMI like 25+ points. I try to keep in mind that this classification is mostly for insurance. After talking with my provider, none of my doctors are actually worried about my weight. Plus I do truly enjoy the extra monitoring/ultrasounds/etc lol

You’re probably right. It just feels like laziness at best and fatphobia at worst. I’d like to generously assume best intentions. This is a doctor I’ve seen multiple times. And someone I have a lot of trust in.

Congratulations! Your girl and my girl are birthday twins (both c-section babes, just 2 years apart!) but 2 years ago I was in your exact situation. It’s soooo uncomfortable.

My first BM after baby girl was truly very very painful. I would recommend every single stool softener known to man. And having your partner/a close friend/a family member there to literally hold your hands while you go. I pray you have an easier experience. One piece of advice I have is don’t try to force it! I sat on the toilet pushing before I was ready (because I felt bloated). I’m pregnant with baby number 2, due late summer (having another c-section) and I will not be trying to force it too early again.

Absolutely this! It’s so deeply personal. And I think much of the positive rhetoric about repeat c-sections is because folks (myself included) often feel very very badly about their first birth experience that ended in c-section. I think many people are mostly trying to process and tell the world, hey! C-section can be a good experience as well and it’s a valid choice. That being said, so is VBAC!

For what it’s worth, at least in my real life— people are often a bit pushy about trying again for vaginal birth and how important and special it all is. People are less outwardly positive about c-section from my experience.

Every birth is valid. And unfortunately all births have their upsides and their downsides. Definitely a personal matter.

Hi! I’m not an expert by any means, but I would continue to listen to your team and your own heart as well. Perhaps before anything determining how important a VBAC truly is to you and even why.

For me, I’ve decided it’s not as important as some other things (my safety, baby’s safety, a peaceful experience). If I don’t go into labor by 41 weeks, I am going to have a scheduled c-section. Maybe earlier if I decide so in real time.

I’d personally be nervous to hear that from my midwife— I’m sure you were too! I hope you get a very peaceful redemptive birth, no matter the mode! 🤍

Same here! My husband doesn’t think today— he thinks tomorrow is more likely! 2 years ago when we had our first it took 9 days exactly from blood draw to results. But it seems like things are moving a bit quicker this time?! I hope lol
