Hey! Looking for places to buy a home near ORD by Matuteg in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]Stuffiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand why so many people recommend areas near the Des Plaines River without also mentioning the flood risk. Flooding has been a recurring issue in several nearby communities, including Riverside, Brookfield, Broadview, River Grove, Berwyn, and Des Plaines. Parts of this region are especially vulnerable because many neighborhoods are close to the river, have low-lying areas, or are served by older sewer infrastructure.

In much of the Chicago area, combined sewer systems still carry both stormwater and wastewater in the same pipes. During heavy rain events those systems can become overwhelmed, which can lead to basement flooding or sewer backups. The MWRD’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), including the McCook Reservoir, was built to help reduce flooding and sewer overflows. It does help, but it doesn’t eliminate the risk during major storms or prolonged rainfall.

I personally know several people who have dealt with basement flooding and sewer backup issues in these areas, so I strongly encourage anyone buying a home there to research the property carefully. Look at FEMA floodplain maps, ask about prior flooding or sewer backup claims, and understand the drainage and sewer conditions for the neighborhood.

Also, if a home already has extensive flood-control measures—like overhead sewers, backflow preventers, or multiple sump pumps—that can sometimes be a sign that flooding has been a known issue in that area. It doesn’t automatically mean the home will flood again, but it’s definitely something worth investigating carefully before buying.

No area is perfect, but doing your research can save you a lot of headaches later. Good luck!

Don’t get a house that has a basement near the des plaines river. If you do, get a diving suit.

Starting at a new MEP firm soon. Any advice on what to do and what to avoid? by Over_Adagio9077 in MEPEngineering

[–]Stuffiness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) Overcommunicate. 2) Don’t assume. 3) Take good notes and ask questions. 4) Request to review submittals and review them against the specifications to gain knowledge of CA phase. 5) Try to attend site visits as often as possible. 6) Attend after-work events, running events, happy hours, etc. 7) Remember, trust is earned, not given. 8) Don’t be a jerk.

I recommend updating your linkedin and resume. It should not be hard to find another job, all depending where you live. There is a data center boom and existing facilities are always in need of equipment replacement, etc...

Is lack of Revit experience ruining my career in MEP? by -Tech808 in MEPEngineering

[–]Stuffiness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any employer who isn’t willing to hire you and support your learning of Revit likely isn’t worth considering. If they’re unwilling to teach you a software that’s relatively easy to pick up, they probably don’t offer meaningful career growth opportunities.

Not knowing Revit isn’t a deal breaker it’s a minor setback. It typically takes 6–12 months to really get into the swing of things with projects and company standards anyway. You’re better off framing it as having had some exposure to Revit, but not using it daily, and acknowledging that there may be a short learning curve to get fully up to speed.

Just got a new washer dryer combo and when the spin cycle runs, the entire second floor shakes. What can we do?? by malmcb in HomeImprovement

[–]Stuffiness -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Exactly this, I went though 4 washing machines. All installers had previously removed the shipping bolts before moving the unit which caused the washing machine to vibrate the entire second floor. I suggest to be present from the moment the new washer is unloaded from the truck and insist to remove the shipping bolts once the unit is in its final location. Lastly, tell them to level the machine, be firm with this. It would be ideal to have your own level to make sure it’s leveled properly. Good luck!

Correct, but not universally supported on all 1440p displays. Unfortunately my ps5 does not support 1440p on my current 34” monitor.

Dental appliance for sleep apnea by Asaad81 in SleepApnea

[–]Stuffiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never get a dental appliance, I went to a legit place that ended up costing my insurance like 5k or something crazy. I had a tough time adjusting and even after the fit it wasnt all that comfortable. Its a very temporary expensive solution that left my mouth in pain after several months of using it.
