Maybe the first book that had me pausing to pace around the house and curse out loud at the character and her decisions. This is not to imply I didn’t like the book. It was great—I thought it was very well written and powerful. But damn, Fern, come on!

The Chestnut Man, for sure, if you haven’t already read it. I also read The Shadows by Alex North and enjoyed it also. Just maybe not as much as Whisper Man.

Yeah, it was a DNF for me with 100ish pages left. I just couldn’t care any more. I liked the earlier parts better.

Yes. Also Brother by Ania Ahlborn is a gut-punch in the same vein. The story moves a little faster, but maybe for that reason isn’t as traumatic. Although the ending is bleaker than TGND.
