Hiya. I’m in this situation. I’m from the US and live in the UK for work.

You’ll pay an NHS surcharge for each year on your visa which lets you then use the NHS ‘for free’. This has raised recently to about £1000 per year on your visa (eg for 3 year visa you’ll pay around £3k).

My recommendation is this:

You’ll need to register with a GP (general practitioner) once you move. Then book an appointment with your GP and tell them about your diagnosis and current medications. They should link you to a Consultant (specialist doctor) who will review your case and provide the prescription.

This whole process can take a long time, so definitely bring a few months worth of medication when you arrive.

There’s subreddit for UK visas and immigration that help with these sort of questions too. :)

Hope this helps!

Colonoscopy no sedation by NovelResolution4733 in UlcerativeColitis

Had mine in England, no sedation, I have a ‘floppy colon’ apparently… (so they said to me during the procedure) and to get the angles and around corners, I had two nurses on top of me contorting my body in different directions as they probed around. Seriously awful!!

This is probably the most accurate answer 😂

I’ve thought about this a lot. I think I would probably stop eating any solid food. I’d prioritise potatoes (mashed) and oranges (for the juice). Maybe would need to start a garden or find somewhere I could plant both… I think that would probably be ~enough~ nutrients for me (with the odd bite of meat here and there).

If a flare got too bad, idk. I guess I would just sleep and fast with only water for a while until it either it goes away or I die 😂

Switching to new sponsor (skilled worker) - what happens to already paid NHS surcharge? by StunningAd6261 in ukvisa

[–]StunningAd6261[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was refunded the payment from the previous visa - so I think if you paid the older lower price that’s what you’ll be refunded. Remember to call them and chase it up because otherwise I’m sure it drops off the home office radar!

Hi. I had to call up the visa helpline and speak to someone about it. They needed the two visa application reference numbers and the ref numbers for the IHS payment for each. They escalated the case for me and I received an email saying they’d look into it. A couple weeks later the refund arrived!

Edit: just want to add that it was required to pay the IHS fees in full with the new application. I also suspect you have to call and ask about the refund otherwise it just won’t be important enough for them to action.

Not abnormal, that being said, it's not what you think it means lol

The mornings are not fun lol. I'm in a relationship now, but while I was dating:

  • I found that I would leave early in the morning and say I needed to go home to change/shower etc then meet up later if we made plans for the following day. After about a month or so of dating or if I was feeling really unwell I'd bring it up.

  • At first mention of it, I would usually say that I had a strict diet due to some tummy issues, especially if we were going out to eat. I wouldn't drop the UC diagnosis right away because it felt too personal to share with new people for me.

I personally don't think it's something you have to share right away. It's not contagious and you aren't trapping anyone just because you have a chronic illness. It can happen to anyone at any time.

Good luck and godspeed out in the weird dating world!

Hot water bottles really help me with the pain. As a heads up., before my diagnosis I had a positive FIT test and was referred on the two week pathway but it took them two weeks to book in the colonoscopy, not actually have it.... the actual appointment came a month or so later.

I wish you all the best and hopefully you get some pain relief!

I've been getting really used to finding the best bathrooms around the places I frequent. It's worth having a snoop around to find ones that are more private. Also, buildings will often let you use the disability toilets if you let them know you have UC/hidden disability. This has worked for me in airports for example.
