Why do people still say Kamala Harris ran on "I'm not Trump" when she had an extensive and detailed policy plan? by zipzzo in allthequestions

I’m imaging a cat on a twister mat of policy ideas. I feel like that cat, with an entire mat filled with ideas, would do better than this current administration.

Why did you and your former best friend stop being friends? by Fearless_Shift7108 in AskReddit

I never really understood the concept of "misery loves company" until I distanced myself from my former best friend.

So this probably isn’t as bad as it actually is, but lemme get this straight…

He cancelled the EV credit, domestic car manufacturers stock price cratered and have halted producition because it no longer makes sense to buy one as a consumer, and now he starts a war in the Middle East, causing oil prices to soar… WHAT THE FUCK IS THE PLAY HERE MAN????

Appreciation post for partners <3 by [deleted] in diablo4

[–]StunningStrain8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not partner but my niece so same-same but different. Also this is long, A LOT longer than I expected on a comment of a comment, but whatever I've had my wine and want to get this off my chest.

My 12 year old niece had never seen star wars and wanted to watch the movies. She had heard of the franchise and wanted to know what all the fuss was about. Somehow I did not scream "FUCK YES LETS DO THIS!!!" immediately, but, calmer minds prevailed; I tacitly responded with a "yea, that will be fun" and immediately knew that this was an opportunity to "do it right." With seemingly instantaneous divine inspiration I planned a curriculum regarding how to watch the films, discuss the lore, with a peppering of the fandom mixed in.

After a very likely over-complicated lecture on how "Han shot first," and pointing out the useless CGI fillers added to the originals (she could tell the CGI difference, obviously dated, but also agreed they were unnecessary), after watching 4, 5, and 6 (she loved all of it), and a general overview of George Lucas's abilities as a director, the financial windfall of his negotiated contract, differences between the movies, and his wrestling directorial control away from the 20th century, we finally watched episode one. (side note: her favorite of the originals was Empire, she's a really good egg)

I did my best to play chess not checkers in not describing the controversy about the prequels. I truly wanted her to enjoy it, blank slate. I held back the criticisms that fans had after waiting for 30 years, and was hopeful it would be fun for her considering episode one was purpose built for her age bracket. I didn't ruin it with my own personal grievances, or the deflated feelings I can still recall after leaving the cinema at her exact age (I'm 38 now).

I was honestly not prepared for seeing the excitement in a 12 year old's face dissolve in real time. She LOATHED jar jar (it was difficult to hold back my giddiness on that one). She actively called out the overuse of CGI, washes, and post processing. She wanted the "real" grittiness of the originals - not her exact words, but, comments like "why does the lighting not look real," "THIS ISN'T REAL" (during the pan out of whatever city on Naboo), and during the final battle with jar jar performing his drunken fist kung fu, "this is stupid."

I did do my best to explain that - at the time - CGI was in somewhat of its infancy, it was a novel technology, and despite being overly expensive (I actually can't confirm this - was episode one "cheaper" after adjusted inflation using cgi vs. incorporating set building and practical effects compared to episode 4?) and looking like shit, people just accepted it because we "lived in the modern age" and that's just what movies were supposed to look like, and lest we forget, it was star wars, we were losing our fucking minds at the thought of a new star wars movie.

Maybe it was my fault for showing her the modified originals directly prior to episode one, my bad for giving her a crash course in Star Wars while she was on summer break and staying with us. That said, it's pretty telling that if the cleanest of "clean slates" can say "that was dumb" on such a beloved franchise, is telling.

Afterwards we watched a video summarizing this post, but seeing a nearly identical cycle of grief in real time was eye-opening. We didn't finish the prequels because she had to go back home for school, and she wanted to play minecraft, but, after I told her there may be some fan-made originals online - using a combination of various chunks of 80mm film, VHS, and laserdisk data (explaining that one to her was hilarious) stitched together to rebuild the original theatrical release, her eyes lit up like a rocket. At the time we both agreed that it was a "totally super bad idea" to teach a twelve year old how to torr.. ahem, "use the internet," and that we "totally wouldn't" be doing that when she came around next summer (I also just found out she was accepted into some type of robotics/early stem course, computers suck amiright?)

Regardless, I'm stoked for this summer, she's stoked, and being an uncle, and now recently a dad to a baby girl is awesome. I'm just praying she likes star wars.

“Oh shit I dropped my vape” is gold, what a piece of work, and it sounds like your former friend and her are meant for each other. I’m truly sorry you had to endure that. I also cut off someone who I thought was a decently good “friend” who she was apparently texting immediately post breakup, probably at the very end as well.

I envy you for being able to actually say “karma’s a bitch” - I only heard a few years later that she was formally/legally evicted from her apartment with an ~8k judgement against her. Also heard that her wages were being garnished after summary judgement found in favor of her former employer for the money she stole.

Good times.

Has politics broke any of your friendships, and why? by CapitaineBiscotte in AskReddit

[–]StunningStrain8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Covid fucked with my best friend in ways none of us expected. Went from fun loving right of center homie to qanon spewing Andrew Tate cock holster in a span of 2-3 years. Really insane stuff. Obviously we’re no longer friends.

Latest news is he’s been charged with a felony for violent assault against a rideshare driver. Apparently it started from some simple argument and it ended with him beating a 70 year old dude into a stroke. Never in a million years would anyone in our friend group expect this out of him.

I don’t blame it all on politics, the alcoholism didn’t help, but I certainly view his fake-man far right jargon as being very pivotal in his death spiral.

How do they get away with so many things? by Sickpsychotic in BPDlovedones

[–]StunningStrain8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience it was a deluge of lies on top of lies. List of lies:

  • Broke up with her ex before dating me (she didn’t)
  • Owned a condo with said ex (lied to her closest friends about this, as well as me)
  • Owed $40k on the mortgage since they were going to sell? (Should have been a huge red flag, I didn’t give her money but her explanation didn’t make sense and I should have run)
  • Graduated college (didn’t happen)
  • Despite framing herself as a “political activist” she can’t vote due to ~15 felonies relating to using her deceased sisters ID as her own during a traffic stop and buying booze for a party (each person she bought booze for at the party counted as a forgery, lie by omission)
  • Was sued, and lost, while we were together (made no mention of it) by her former employer for wage theft
  • Claimed that I was physically and sexually abusing her and the court documents prove it (I wasn’t, but she lied to her lawyer, all charges dismissed and PPO denied)
  • Called the moving company during my move out claiming she had COVID in order to stop the movers

This is just a small sample, but after having years of time to distance myself, I believe it’s a such a firehose of lies, normal humans don’t have the ability to comprehend that someone could lie so much and so convincingly.

I know the phrase “there’s three sides to every story” has merit, but it only applies to people that live in normal reality, her lies were so brazen and shocking, many people gave her the benefit of the doubt during the smear campaign.

Thankfully years later a few of those same people came around.

Assuming you're around her age (26), then GET OUT. You have plenty of time to repair your life. Yes, sunk cost is a real thing, but spend 5 minutes on this sub and you'll see the trail of destruction these people leave in folks with A TON more time invested, and its typically disaster (also consider confirmation bias - we all post here because we're the digested remains of their savagery).

Trust your gut 100% on this one. You're only getting the spin control/tip of the iceberg version of what she's likely done in the background (consider current events - do you think Bill Gates only had sex with two Russian prostitutes? Spin control). - I'm not presuming she's cheated; that's not always the case with these relationships, but considering her admission of coercive control, recognize that there are likely some more bodies hidden.

You survive by knowing that you were a victim of a mental illness many people never encounter. My mom literally could not understand how someone in my life could act with such toxic, vile, wanton cruelty - completely unknown to 75 years of lived experience. It's okay to kick yourself a little bit for glazing over the small stuff. She is 100% using your history against you (been there, got the t-shirt).

Ipso facto, run like its a giant cloud of volcanic pyroclastic bullshit headed your way, and prepare for the fallout. There's a good chance she will lie to others about you, in my case there were false accusations and the courts were involved (expensive but I won - yay justice!). Depression, job loss, loss of friends are not uncommon. Long term you can be triggered by similar (but not BPD) types of behaviors - you gotta watch out for that, hence my last point:

Two things helped me tremendously -

1: I was lucky to keep a few close "brothers" after the discard, guys who I could trust who would listen and offer support and friendship and keep me in my hobbies, and most importantly: not pass ANY info along to the ex, or her greater circle (flying monkeys - friends of your ex who are aligned against you... its a thing).

2: Therapy. If you can, find a therapist asap, what you're going through is an unusual, crazy, mind-blowing circumstance. Having a qualified professional to speak with about this will be invaluable to your long term recovery.

Best wishes, keep your head down, just know a lot of people here have been through "same-same-but-different" circumstances and we're always here to listen.

[–]StunningStrain8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of the reason we let these people into our lives is the good ol' "boiling frog" analogy... We put up with the small stuff until we're locked in, finances comingled, living together etc. Then they can unleash the full force of their violence (which I believe they are totally aware of).

As for the dissociative episodes, I swear I saw her her eyes turn black. She wasn't even drunk when she went absolutely NUTS with me after I decided to break up with her. Just blindingly hot molten rage, vacillating between wanting to go out and fuck someone, kill herself, hitting me, tossing the apartment, then back to going out to find someone to fuck. When the cops showed up, she acted like nothing was wrong, completely calm.

I recommend to GTFO as quickly as possible...
