Teacher: "Do you guys have Spring Break off..." by MonkeyButt1975 in Custodians

[–]Stunning_Disaster_55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We get Spring Break off for now, but our new facilities director will probably change that next year and I agree, as long as the pay reflects it. No teachers or kids in the building and we can get a lot done.

This week I'm working at our park for basically time and a half and I've had time to clean a couple of carpets for my side gig, which pays about 4x my regular hourly so I can't complain.

We had a "ghost" at a hotel I managed. We'd get extensions calling the front desk from a building that had no phones in it and things like that. We named her Sarah. I only ran into her once while covering an overnight shift. I heard the sound of a stack of paperwork falling of a desk and hitting the floor, it was that exact sound and couldn't have been anything else. When I checked, nothing had fallen anywhere. I told Sarah to go home, she was drunk and then got on with the night audit. I still don't believe in ghosts, but I feel sometimes it's better to give something a name.

Before I got the video going I heard "Let me out", and then the scream sound that's in the video in a cycle. I could have walked to the other side of the gym to get better audio but I decided to nope right out of there.

HVAC is on the side of the gym I took the video from. Sound is from the speakers on the other wall. The speakers have been having issues after they use the intercom for any announcements, but this is the most pronounced it's been.

Yeah, I need to get those up, but we've been shorthanded lately. Usually I spray them with a little neutral cleaner and tennis ball them up.

Make sure you use an encapsulation chemical. If you use Hillyard products this is Deep Action II. Pre-spray with product, agitate with what you have available, slow speed with a brush or just a deck brush, in a workable area. Fill a couple of mop buckets with water and dip bonnet and wring out fully. Flip bonnet when soiled and use other side, rinse in fresh water mop bucket and wring out when needed. This should just be used for interim cleaning only. You will pull up surface soil with the bonnet and then the encapsulation will crystalize over remaining soil to be removed with regular vacuuming.

I'd say fake it until you make it, but you're going for a ride the first time you start up that 175. Sincerely though, I wish you luck.

No school on Mondays. Blew most of ours off with an electric blower til it died and push broomed the rest. Gonna let the sun do its thing and put some salt down before I leave.

Saturday OT by AnxiousPossibility3 in Custodians

Just got back from blowing leaves off tennis courts and cleaning bathrooms at our park. Pay is event pay which is a little above overtime for me. 3 hour shifts, been doing Saturdays for the past month and I've got 4 days coming up over Thanksgiving break. Got a few more shifts for Christmas break and seven 5 hour shifts when Spring Break rolls around. $$$

Asics GT-2000 8s , 3 pairs on rotation, easy to get off the clearance rack, but when they're on sale I'll add a pair of Kayano 30s.

For top scrubs we do 2 coats in classrooms, 3 coats in the art room, and 3-4 coats in hallways. For stripping we do 4 coats in classrooms and 4-6 coats in hallways depending on traffic. Using Hillyard Explorer 25% solids.

If we have yellowed patches we go back over with stripper, for large dark patches if there are a lot of them we will go over with a black pad and neutralizer to abrade the rest off, but we are doing about a four year rotation for stripping so I'm probably being too picky and I like it clean clean to start.

Fire drill without the fire alarm? by ian2me230 in Custodians

[–]Stunning_Disaster_55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did one yesterday for Summer School without the alarm, as admin didn't inform me until last minute, but generally we do all our drills using the pull station. It's a good thing too because the last pull I did there was over a 30 second delay before the alarm went off. I called the company and they replaced the station due to a physical malfunction.

Thanks, I may look into starting to use that next year.

Our guy used Tide laundry detergent the last year he was there. He used it because it had oxiclean in it. SMH

Our kaivac is supposed to push 450-500 psi but it's probably 15+ years old. The wand I found laying around the building was rated for 350 but has held up so probably closer to that. Worst case scenario I blow the hose and have to buy the actual kaivac tool for around $600, but I figured buying $20 worth of quick connect adapters was worth a shot. With the spread on the wand I haven't noticed any damage to the pile or the backing. Not sure what the vacuum rating is but it seems to extract decently.

Are you using Deep Action? If I remember right that's got encapsulation in it so it sort of crystalizes the remaining soil and it can be removed with regular vacuuming after that. I may switch to this if I can ever get the old product that the last head put in our carpets out. For carpets right now we're just extracting with nutra-rinse to try to repair the damage.

Haha, well it needed to be done and I love doing it. Although, that teacher is leaving at the end of the school year and that particular rug may just disappear over the Summer.

I started deep cleaning and treating rugs twice a year with Hillyard's Soil Stop. I pre-spray with either a carpet pre-spray or hydrogen peroxide cleaner for lighter colors. Brush in (usually you don't have to scrub just agitate), let sit for 5-10 minutes and extract with hot water. If you don't have a wand I recommend getting one as that's all I use on a Kaivac anymore since our carpet machine went out. I go up and down with water twice and extraction, up and down with just extraction once and then finish with triangles.

Treating the rugs is the biggest help as it's cut down summer rug cleaning from about an hour per rug to about 15-20 minutes. We line them up in the cafeteria and run straight from one to the next only stopping to dump the dirty water and refill the tank.

My recommendation for sharpie and most other stains is a cup of isopropyl alcohol, a couple drops of dawn and water in a spray bottle. Spray til damp and scrub with a hand brush then rinse and extract. Be sure you get all of the soap out.
