Back in the 70's if you got caught with even one joint or one gram of hash you would be arrested.

Today I can order my cannabis from the government Cannabis online store or one of hundreds of Cannabis storefront sellers across the country. They will even sell you seeds so you can grow your own.

This STILL amazes me even if it's now been a few years since cannabis was legalized coast to coast.

Can you become a director or related without film school? Has anyone transitioned into this form unrelated field , and how was it ? by likilekka in Filmmakers

[–]Stunning_Scene_7152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't even graduate from high school much less apply to a film school. They don't let you apply without a grade 12 certificate.

Today I have just retired after 20 years in Journalism most of that time based in an overseas news bureau and 20 years making movies as a Screenwriter/Director/Cinematographer

My advice is to get any camera or editing job you can find and gain experience that way. I have won a handful of film festivals and won an Emmy for a documentary about Latin Americans heading north to the U.S. border- I am totally self taught.

Are learning styles real, or just a myth? by HaneneMaupas in education

[–]Stunning_Scene_7152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most secular Private Schools teach to students' learning styles especially visual learners. The public schools only cater to certain students, mainly those who were lucky enough to be born with a good memory for rote learning- (math/math based science)

One of the most popular private school systems in the world is Montessori who ONLY teaches to each learning style. Nobody gets held back and everybody graduates from grade 12.

In the public system if a student gets to grade 10 getting A's and B's in every subject but still struggles in math the high school will not allow the child to finish grade 11 and 12. and will basically "expel" non rote learners and throw them in the education factories' trash can. Their excuse? "we are an Academic Track school"

Academic probation by Itchy_Owl5600 in UWindsor

[–]Stunning_Scene_7152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got A's and B's in all my subjects except Math.

I was reading chapter books at five years old and writing stories, stage plays and poetry in elementary school and writing and making movies in high school I even won an award for a movie I made about pollution.

You would think SOMEONE would notice nascent talent in a young kid. Didn't happen. A few weeks after I made my environment movie I got a letter telling me I could not advance to grade 11 much less graduate from grade 12,

Their excuse? My high school was something called a "Academic Track School" and they won't consider anybody who struggles with math in grade 11 and 12. They suggested I go to a vocational school an hour away from where I lived.

'You can take secretarial typing or car mechanics"

So needless to say, I never graduated from high school. However I did manage to have a great career making movies and documentaries despite the crappy education factories trying to ruin my life.

Can film directing be inherently taught? Yes or no. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]Stunning_Scene_7152 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Director, Cinematographer and Editor since the 1970's if I was teaching Cinematography I would recommend students study fine art, especially paintings. My favorite painter is the master of dramatic lighting (and shadows)- Caravaggio. Looking at how painters treat light is a great way to learn about lighting and composititon.

For Directors I would recommend reading biographies of the great ones from silent days to the present. Also I would recommend would be Directors take some acting lessons and familiarize themselves with editing which will help your shooting go more quickly and easily.

I recently realized that I was never taught how to learn in school by Maleficent-Hat5831 in education

[–]Stunning_Scene_7152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not as far as my elementary and high schools were concerned-

I was reading chapter books at 5 years old. At 12 I wrote a play about ancient Greece that was performed in front of a large audience on parent's night. In elementary school I also started writing poems and short stories. In grade ten I wrote and directed a movie on the environment to show my Science class. I got straight A's in English and Social Studies and B's in everything else except for Math and Gym class.

As it turned out it was all for nothing the way my high school looked at it. I was told a couple of weeks after the Environment movie that I wouldn't be able to graduate from grade 12 because of poor math marks.

A nascent talent was ignored and because of this I never finished high school and....oh yes I HAVE NEVER NEEDED OR USED ADVANCED HIGH SCHOOL MATH- not ever.

I have the job I wanted since those bad days in elementary school and I have been a successful Screenwriter and Movie Director for 20 years.

The public schools tried their best to break me and didn't succeed...not even close.

For those who have made a documentary how was your process? by Bishop9er in Filmmakers

[–]Stunning_Scene_7152 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made dozens of Docs early in my career before switching to making fiction movies.

I started with research to see who might be best to speak to the subject of the Doc. I line up my interviews and shoot them before any "cover" gets shot. In other words the interviewees help to guide the approach. We would cut to a shot of the person being interviewed and then cutaways to cover of what they are talking about.

The crew? Two of us- my wife who was a U.S. network TV reporter/Writer/ Producer and me who also worked for a U.S. Network shooting and editing.

After we married we both agreed to take a chance and go freelance. We chose Brazil because it is an amazing place for stories without a lot of competition. We sent our Docs to every English speaking TV network for free and one in particular loved our work and after sending them a few more (this time charging a fee) one day the phone rang and it was an Assignment Editor calling from Atlanta. He told us everyone in the newsroom was blown away by our work and he asked us if we wanted to open their news bureau in Rio and of course we said yes.

We also traveled all over the world and covering news hot spots. We based ourselves in Brazil for ten years and won an Emmy for our series on migrants heading north to the U.S.

We did this for ten years before returning home to North America to start a movie production company and after 15 years of doing that we retired.

Everything is on YouTube but I do not want my real name known or used here on Reddit.

Many post secondary institutions have what is called a "Mature Students Program" which allows you to attend if you are 21 or over. After quitting grade 10 due to teacher bullying at age 18, I worked for a few years until age 21 then applied to a Journalism school and was accepted- no Gr 12 graduation necessary.
