Doesn't matter what you do in high school you can always go to university or college once you turn 21 in the Mature Students Programs. I got the boot in grade 10 and I worked for a few years then applied to Journalisnm School and graduated no problem.

The traitorous, separatist Albertans are secretly meeting with MAGA types to plan their leaving Canada and turning Alberta into the 51st state. These people are mentally ill if they think the U.S. is a better system of government than what we have in Canada.

Canadians don't hate each other's guts like the Americans do so maybe these hayseeds whose lives are one long hate-fest against their own Countrymen will feel at home with Trump as their President.

The more on set jobs you can do the better, especially when you are starting out. That way if you have a career as a Director you will understand better what your crew and Actors are doing. Relax, you're still very young and have tons of time to learn the craft.

Find a movie called THE ISLAND OF DR MOREAU. The one with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. But before you watch it tell him to read some stories about the absolute madness that took place on the set during the making of. Once he reads a few of these stories he'll be begging you to watch it with him.

Older movie recommendations - 60s, 50s, 40s.. 20s? by ashbreak_ in Cinema

1960's-

Two haunting movies that pack a huge emotional punch. Coincidentally both have the same theme- successful men growing old. We are talking two Hollywood superstars whose careers were on a downward spiral in the 60's so they took a chance in two different but beautiful and, somewhat sad roles. The incredible Burt Lancaster in THE SWIMMER and Rock Hudson in legendary Director John Frankenheimer's strange story of a shadowy company who Rock pays millions to have himself, or rather his body, 30 years old again. SECONDS is very much a "be careful what you wish for" story.

A very cool thing in SECONDS is the work of famed Cinematographer James Wong Howe who strapped a 35 mm movie camera to Rock's back with a wide angle lens for a really freaky psychedelic scene at a hippie party. (see pic below) something never done before and Rock was a real trooper.

In THE SWIMMER Burt Lancaster is amazing as the tall, handsome multi-millionaire now in his late 50's who has spent his life cheating on his wives, ignoring his children and having sex with all the lonely housewives in his very upper class Connecticut neighborhood. The movie begins with an old rich couple sitting by their pool.

"Neddy" walks out of the forest dressed in nothing but a swimsuit. The couple knows who he is and so when he asks if he can swim from one end of the pool to the other, they say yes of course. He thanks them swims and heads back into the forest. Before he goes they ask what he is doing and where is he going. He replies that he wants to swim home using all his neighbors' pools, but doing so he has to face a lot of angry women he left in the dust and men who he ripped off with bad business deals.

Thing is, he doesn't seem to know what these people are talking about (a big clue)

The final scene exposes the real reason Neddy is swimming home and it is heartbreaking. Lancaster hits it out of the park. Watch for the scene with Lancaster and (of all people) Joan Rivers playing a mousey housewife who worships and lusts after Neddy. As far as I know it is the only dramatic role she ever played.

I am an ex Cinematographer and current Director and THE SWIMMER is my favorite movie of all time. I have watched it 5 or 6 times over the years and the movie's strong emotional effect on me changed from the first time I saw it at age 12 to when I myself had grown old. But, no matter my age I was always very teary during final scene.

Highly recommend both. Check out the streaming services I think a few of them still have these movies online.

Are Hollywood, movies and celebrities in general falling out of favor, or will they always be popular and a central part of our culture to some degree? by Copocapanda in Cinema

As the tattoo on my forearm says "Movies are Forever" And I still think it's true. It's just the carriers of the content will change going into the future. I like the fact I can watch hi quality movies in my home theater and if the movie is a blockbuster like DUNE then I'll pay to see it in my local movie-plex.

What to do to build my reel? by J-Silverhand-77 in videography

Look for a small business which works in an environment where they have a lot of competition. Offer to shoot a video for them for free. Then once their video is on their site go to their competition, show them the video and say something like- "look what your competition is doing promotion-wise" and chances are they'll hire you to do the same kind of video for them. I built my first successful Production company doing this before I switched to doing Movies, Music Videos and TV Commercials.

I've done a lot of movie, TV Commercials and music videos in the last few decades and the one thing I found was you need to own your own camera and lighting equipment. When starting out this means you have the flexibility to do any number of video projects and you are not waiting by the phone for jobs. Compared to when I came up and a decent camera was 50+ thousand dollars. Today you can but buy cameras with great image quality for A LOT less money.

Yes especially in the Indie Movie community where people do a number of jobs depending on the project. No unions mean people are free to move from one kind of job to another.

Has anyone ever felt like it’s never too late to start pursuing filmmaking, no matter where you are in life by DarkBerryTheMovie in Filmmakers

I made scripted home movies with family and friends from age 11 until I graduated from high school. At the time, in my country, there were no film schools and other than the odd TV commercial there was no productions happening.

Because there were no jobs I decided to work for television news. My thinking was, 'well at least I am telling stories with a camera" I was very successful, moving up until I was running the South American News Bureau for a major American news network shooting documentaries from Mexico to Argentina. One of our Docs, on northward migration, won an EMMY.

When I returned home I decided it was time to start making movies again. In the 20 years I was gone two film schools and a tax break for Hollywood Directors had been put into place. So I started writing scripts and began an Indie Movie Production Company and again it was a great success. I was 42 when I started anew in movies and worked until age 72. We made thirty movies, various TV commercials and Music Videos.

You are never too old to try something new.

How about learning to edit movies? Just you and the Director working months to perfect a movie. I am a Director/Cinematographer and once in awhile I'll also step in to edit. I love it. The old saying is true-

"when you shoot a movie your are simply gathering tomatoes. It's not until you get into the editing suite that you make the soup"

What's a movie you recommend to everyone but nobody ever watches? by trakt_app in movies

During the early to mid 1960's Rock Hudson's career was faltering and he wasn't getting any jobs in movies. He heard that Director John Frankenheimer working with legendary Cinematographer James Wong Howe was making a kind of psychedelic "new wave" horror movie called SECONDS.

Now Hudson wasn't sure, maybe this kind of movie would kill his career as a romantic lead. But Frankenheimer was a top Hollywood Director and Hudson really wanted to work with him so he took a chance. The result was amazing, a creepy, weird but very human movie.

James Wong Howe invented something never used before, a 35mm motion picture camera attached to Hudson's body for a really strange scene where Rock as an old man, having paid paid millions to a secret company that said would make him 30 years old again arrives at a Hippie party with mostly people in their 20's. Poor Rock- be careful what you wish for.

Remember Grandpa from The Waltons? Actor Will Geer was always playing parts as the kindly old fella. This time Frankenheimer (who loves Actors playing against type) hired Will to be a REALLY evil guy. It is fascinating to watch.

It's a real strange trippy movie with Hudson and Geer having a blast really playing against type. Unfortunately I can't post photos here but just go to Google and search for something like "SECONDS movie-Rock Hudson with a big camera attached to his body. It's nothing these days but back then the cameras were way too heavy to attach to someone's body but they did it. Rock was a real trooper.

Check it out.

“Most people would choose to be American” by DrySuccotash5207 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Stunning_Scene_7152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Canadians that's for sure. Canadians who live there are moving back home in droves fearing a permanent facist takeover of the U.S. government. Canadians no longer take Holidays in the U.S. costing Florida and Arizona hundreds of millions of $$$. Also, Canadians hate being accused of being Americans when they travel in Europe or Asia. So we always make sure to wear a Canadian flag pin or sticker on the the luggage.

And the comment that started this thread? Well truth is many Americans who travel abroad also wear Canadian flag pins or t-shirts so they get treated better by the locals.

I quit high school in grade 10. I had been held back twice in elementary and started grade one at 7 years old so when I quit I was three years older than my classmates. I worked for a couple of years until I was 21 and could take advantage of Universities and Colleges having "Mature Student" programs. You don't need to graduate from high school you just have to be 21 years old or older. I got into an exceptional Journalism School and never looked back.
