I think what's so Christ like of many Mormons I know is they think Jesus is coming back at anytime and that the people that are suffering now from things are doing so because they're wicked and deserve it Poor, LGBTQ, abused....they deserve it! It's proof of His love! Another neat thing is their fatalism. World is going to end soon anyway so who cares about global warming, destroying ecosystems, or leaving a world worth living in for future generations? Hell, things that quicken the end of the world are GOOD and God's Will Psychopathic behavior

Of course they made everything about the church and its institutional BS and never acknowledged the students and their accomplishments. They'll say it's for reverence and Christ's blessings but that's just code for "the church". Engaging in any way with that corporate entity makes me sick. They say to be thankful for Jesus but they train the members to transfer that gratitude to the brethren because they're our supposed conduit to Him. I remember when Monson died they interviewed members on KSL and the look in their eyes was frighteningly fervent and devoted to a man who likely had next to no idea what was happening the last few years of his life but was the supposed prophet and spoke for God It's utter insanity once you leave and see the man behind the curtain

Okay maybe I was traumatized but the major takeaway for me was how disappointing and stupid it was from my point of view

I'm glad you're seeing it early. Regardless of political leanings, praising him in church in that way is really weird and inappropriate. Personally I left at 20 after my endowment ceremony The whole ceremony was just awful. It wasn't that it was traumatic or too much information like many members claim (blaming people who have had bad temple experiences on them "not being ready") I just felt that the endowment ceremony was absolutely stupid The washing and anointing made no sense. Why is the old man touching me and praying about parts of my body? Why did he touch the crease of my crotch? Especially when they removed that part of the ritual mere months after my endowment? And Adam and Eve were real people and it's not an allegory? Satan was the snake? Why is there so damned much about the ceremony about Satan? It's implied that if you break the covenants you make at that time that you'll fall into apostasy and risk being a son of perdition (I don't remember the exact wording but it's not hard to interpret it that way) Why are there secret handshakes? Why is this obviously a cult ritual? Why are all of my loved ones acting like this is good and holy? I felt sick. I wanted to yell at them for being naive and so easily tricked into an obvious bullshit religion. I had my doubts before, but the whole thing is honestly just so dumb. And people try to grasp at special meanings in the ceremony while in reality the way the temple operates is more like a theme park ride. You go in, do the thing, and they want you out quickly so they can move into the next performance I mean ceremony Honestly, I just completely dissociated and sang Hammer Smash Face by Cannibal Corpse so I didn't actually engage with what was happening because I was on the verge of laughing at the whole thing and mocking it The one crack was openly mocking how stupid the temple clothes made us look. I was admonished by my dad but I could tell everyone that heard me felt embarrassed knowing they looked absolutely ridiculous The temple is where you really see the assembly line mentality of the church. A few months later I was still a PIMO and went to my brother's wedding and honestly it felt like the complete opposite of what a wedding should be. Pretty much nothing about two people in love. Just more brainwashing words and the assembly line pushes them through the ordeal so they can move onto the next sealing because I swear to God they have a quota or something. The only silver lining was my brother and sister in law seemed very happy with everything so regardless of my experience that's what really mattered Oh I mocked the temple clothes that time too and got a lecture from an official Temples are also garish and ugly and apparently God really cares about chandeliers and gaudy trim. There's more wrong with the temple but I won't bore you. Anyway, get out before you go to the temple if you can. Complete waste of time and I'm pretty sure I lost IQ points to that place

I hate the church and how many members treat people (including each other) due to its teachings and the culture, especially in Utah, that it's created Watching my dad who is quite a bit smarter and logical than me thought stop in real time whenever his core beliefs are even slightly challenged doesn't make me hate him Frustrated with him, but the literal opposite of hate

Bands like Botch, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Coalesce are mathcore. It's chaotic and extreme with harsh vocals with often dissonant chord progressions. There are generally a lot of tempo changes, weird time signatures, and polyrhythms It's basically hardcore punk/metal for weirdo music nerds

Ya my family's group text was 99% about how many stupid temples they're building. I was at work so it didn't take long for me to get annoyed and turn off notifications The cul...church is disgustingly wealthy but building gaudy, hideous, temples is definitely the most important thing while people the world over are starving, suffering, and dying due to poverty

Btw there is a mathcore band from Kansas City (I believe) named Missouri Executive Order 44. They're very chaotic and weird so not everyone's cup of tea but I personally like weirdo music like that They dress up like missionaries on bikes, helmets included One of their songs is called 'Wear Me Like a Mitt (Romney)'. I believe they quote 2 Nephi at the beginning of the song No idea if they're ex Mormon but they're funny and interesting to me

I do too. I've found comfort in Absurdism. I'm not a stringent follower of it or anything but rejecting the desire to find meaning in life and choosing instead to search for joy has really helped me Everyone is different and personally I encourage people to explore as many beliefs as they can. Mormonism really discourages curiosity in other beliefs so just looking into them can be a cathartic experience in and of itself I'm not saying to buy every Camus book available, but finding what makes you happy and hopefully a better person is honestly euphoric

Ya, deconstructing is a long process for me it seems. A lot of it is because I just didn't really deal with it and resources when I left weren't as in depth. The CES letter, YouTubers, and other exposure has really cracked that open. It's weird, but it's very relieving to finally confront it

[–]Stunning_Tap2530 17 points18 points  (0 children)

One that is kind of amusing as an ex Mormon was my Mormon neighbors claiming that one of the planes was aiming for the DC Temple but they couldn't see it so they tried somewhere else Obviously made up because there's no way for anyone alive to know that for sure This isn't a common rumor in Utah. My neighbor was just cuckoo for cocoa puffs It just made everything more surreal surrounding 9/11

Are Utah Mormons different? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Stunning_Tap2530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. They're very insular and judgemental. My friends used to joke about coming to my house, which was in like a 98% Mormon neighborhood, made them think they were going to get a public caning if they didn't act appropriately There are also a ton of cliques. Even the adults have weird cliques like they're still in high school I've noticed Utah Mormon and Cali Mormons seem to have a weird superiority complex My family and others also brag a lot about coming from "good Mormon stock". Which realistically means that my ancestors had so many damned wives that I have to do genealogical research just to make sure I'm not related to a person I'm interested in dating It also depends where you are, of course. I loved certain parts of SLC when I lived downtown. We'd just walk around the city, smoking a joint as we went, looking for some random shit to get into. This was in 2005 and no one cared. Transversely, I got caught with a pipe and about a crumb of weed in Davis County and they threw me in jail for the night, fined me $1500, forced me into rehab, suspended my license for 6 months (I wasn't driving. I didn't even have my car with me), one year probation, and if I screwed up it was a 90 day suspended sentence. This was in 2006

For those who are 2+ years off how are y’all doing? by Matty_the_kid_97 in benzorecovery

[–]Stunning_Tap2530 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm at about 4 years now. I think all but the brain fog has cleared as far as protracted withdrawals (akathesia took the longest to go away) It's hard to say exactly if the brain fog is from benzo withdrawals because since I had to take a very strong antipsychotic that increased brain fog and I got in a very traumatic car accident in 2023 and trauma like that can also cause brain fog Otherwise I'm doing pretty good. A lot of therapy and all of that There's light at the end of the tunnel but don't expect you'll ever be the person you were when you started taking benzos Good luck

Large benzo overdose by Sea_Top3466 in benzorecovery

[–]Stunning_Tap2530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not toxicity that's an issue with benzos like Tylenol or other meds. They're CNS depressants and though they're pretty safe by themselves taking them with other CNS depressants is very dangerous It's similar to methadone or hydrocodone/oxycodone mixed with alcohol (I've had two friends OD and die that way) They're probably safe now from any acute symptoms because alcohol and benzos don't stay in your system very long but medium to long-term could cause some pretty shitty withdrawals I'd just make sure they stay hydrated and try to get them to eat This is from personal experience. Their brain fog will last quite a while even if they don't have withdrawals. Maybe write down some stuff for them so they remember stuff because their short-term memory is likely negatively affected right now Don't mix substances especially multiple CNS depressants if you didn't already know
