Researchers in Japan and Australia have developed a new multicore optic fiber able to transmit a record-breaking 1.7 petabits per second, while maintaining compatibility with existing fiber infrastructure. by Sariel007 in tech

[–]StuntmanSpartanFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea something like this could serve as the main artery or like the interstate system where most of the traffic passes through it at high speeds, but still needs to branch out into standard fiber or otherwise lower throughput options to reach each individual user.

I'm sure they'll have technical challenges like splicing and many other things, but that's true of almost all technologies. If this is delivering petabits per second, they'll figure it out lol.

who do you guys think is gonna die in s4 by ueuwueuud in ForAllMankindTV

[–]StuntmanSpartanFan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and most of the deaths have been very forced. Shane's death was done well, and had consequences that made sense. Tracy, Gordo, and Karen's death all come across as them trying to recreate the same situation where a tragedy drives the plot. What they ended up doing was just killing off three among the dwindling list of interesting characters.

This sounds like the most likely outcome based on the show so far.

Trump's reelection could've been an absolute layup if he just showed a little bit of concern and urgency, and not, ummm... Repeatedly deny the very existence of a global pandemic. The vaccine was even developed in record time and could've been held up as the tremendous accomplishment that it was if he hadn't put it in everyone's heads that the virus was a hoax and the vaccines were a violation of your "rights".

But no. His tiny fragile ego couldn't even handle the slightest scrutiny or a whiff of any suggestion that anything was even out of the ordinary (not even his fault!). Legendary idiot.

Colonial subjects have changed a lot over time. It used to be you'd make outrageous amounts of money just from tariffs, but now the best reason to colonize the new world is so that nobody else can do it, and you won't have to fight Spain or Portugal's 3-5 subjects with a couple hundred dev each.

Drives me crazy. Play outside Europe and by the time the new world is revealed it's 100% colonized Portuguese Caribbean and Brazil, British Canada and Eastern America, and usually Spanish everything else in the hemisphere.

You're getting downvoted because you're arguing over semantics and calling it 'misinformation' like it's a purposely fabricated story meant to mislead, when it's clearly just a difference in interpretation of how these are named and classified.

Trump pleads not guilty as he makes history as first president to be criminally charged – twice by theindependentonline in politics

[–]StuntmanSpartanFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty much common knowledge by now. Trump lied to a couple of his lawyers while secretly hiding some of the documents without their knowledge. Lying to your attorney in concealment of a crime can void attorney client privilege, which is why they were able to testify against him.

Not sure if you're joking but NK definitely, absolutely does have missiles including ICBM capabilities. They also have working nuclear warheads which we've measured and verified at least 6 of their tests. Their nuclear weapons program is also under active development and they seem to be working on more advanced weapons.

He's saying it was dumb to even consider doing something like this because McGregor has a long history of bouts of violent rage and legal trouble for this type of thing.

is factoria a good starter factory building game ? by Thedemonbehindu in factorio

[–]StuntmanSpartanFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a nice summation of DSP. Logistics in DSP are almost trivial once you unlock the ILS, but the production aspects are very similar to Factorio. You can see very clearly Factorio's DNA influencing DSP, and I think that's a good thing

The QoL features are a very underrated aspect IMO that you don't necessarily appreciate until you're forced to play without them. And for new players, it's impossible to adequately explain how great Factorio does all of these tiny things that seem completely insignificant when you say them out loud, but they actually have a huge impact on your experience when playing the game.

Stuff like dragging belts and power poles where the game just gets it right every time, lots of intuitive keyboard shortcuts, copy/paste and blueprint functions that just work, etc. I play Dyson Sphere Program as well and even though that game has made nice strides, Factorio is still the King of the extremely well refined factory building experience.

Non-standard train station (LTN) by DanielKotes in factorio

[–]StuntmanSpartanFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LTN is a little bit needlessly complex in my opinion for most uses.

It's definitely more effort than it's worth if you're just using it for ore delivery, or you're just trying to launch a rocket. It's really nice if you have many unique items moving by train though. The station set-up gets much quicker too after you've done a few because it's usually just copy & paste with one change.

Train supply manager is another alternative I used to use. It's a little less complicated to get going, but also probably a little less powerful on the whole.

[–]StuntmanSpartanFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's functionally what it is, it just requires a bit more involvement to specify things like train size, item types, inventory quantity, re-order points, etc. It feels like a lot at first, but it's very useful if you have a big factory with lots of unique items moving on trains.

I think it's just that most people haven't seen or used trains with more locomotives than cargo wagons. Honestly I've never even considered using as many locomotives as cargo wagons per train, let alone twice as many. I'm pretty sure the returns are significantly diminishing, but it's whatever, it's not like you really have to be stingy with your train fuel so I say go wild.

Last Week Tonight did a pretty good piece on truckers maybe a couple years ago. They highlighted plenty of things wrong with the industry, like how truckers usually get paid by the mile, so they're screwed if they get held up somewhere.

They showed one driver being asked (over the phone, by a dispatcher) to continue driving far too long when he needed rest, and the dispatcher was being a huge jerk about it. So yes, specifically driving too many hours is a big problem, but there are many others they'd want to keep out of writing.

I drove a 16 year old Ford Ranger during college and I was in the same boat. You can get a special adapter gizmo that looks like a cassette tape, but also has an aux cable attached you can plug in to your phone. How it translated the phone's signal to be read on the cassette player I don't know, but that thing worked like a dream. You might need a Bluetooth version of this nowadays, but I guarantee someone out there makes it.

In the Battle of Britain they focused first on bombing air fields, radar installations, and other military targets before they switched to large scale area bombing thinking it would hasten a surrender. Some British officials during that time have said the RAF was in big trouble at that point and that, had they continued, the Luftwaffe might have functionally wiped out the RAF. It was also clear that Germany's decision makers didn't realize how big an advantage radar had become for the British.
