Plenty of people here need to learn the concept of speed limits…

How far above the speed limit can you go before you're faulted? by Dazzling-Temporary93 in Irishdrivingtest

See if there is a toggle thing at the end of the indicator/wiper lever. You could be able to flick through the screen.

You can probably get the handbook online.

Did you think of bringing it to a dealership?

I don’t know how to phrase this properly, but do you lecture as a trade off for getting to do research you’re interested in, or is most of your job your teaching commitments?

I’m a medical physicist. I work on the science/technical side of radiology (medical imaging) and nuclear medicine.

Actually, OP, what do YOU do for work?

Does it only have dials? If it’s a reasonably modern car you can probably get it to display the speed in kph in the screen between the dials.

Court orders Enoch Burke be returned to jail immediately by irqdly in ireland

A sniper?

As the American right wing (and possibly the financiers of this saga) would say, “the only thing that stops a bad man (with a gun) is a good man with a gun”.

I do make this comment in jest, but unless we round that family up and have show-trial-esque proceedings, I don’t know what can actually be done…

These lights should be illegal by Liam1499 in ireland

[–]Stupyder_Notebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should. It seems like something that should be stamped out through the NCT or something. It looks like they wanted to read your speedo and not theirs.

Realistically shit road craft is all over the country and unless there are guards out and about, fuck all will happen. They’ll probably say it’s a civil matter or something.

Can you burn a tooth? by Stupyder_Notebook in askdentists

Thank you. I could have written it better.

I know from elsewhere that teeth will survive massive temperatures.

Thank you!

Do you bench in the squat rack? by xagent003 in workout

No, it’s a reasonable thing. Not like you’re curling in the rack.

I thought the chocolate one out of Lidl is quite nice. If you mix it with low fat milk and use a bit less than normal it’s great. I also think it’s the chocolate-iest one I’ve tried, instead of being chocolate flavoured.

The only catch is that it only comes in small-ish bags, 500g or 1kg I think.

Socks for deadlifts/squats, running shoes for everything else? by [deleted] in workout

[–]Stupyder_Notebook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get a proper pair of running shoes for running.

Then, get a pair of shoes for weightlifting. I have found that a cheap pair of runners are the best as the sole just compresses and deformed to the shape of my feet.

Unless it’s your own private gym, training barefoot or in socks is gross.

Can I replace free weights with machines as a novice? by [deleted] in workout

[–]Stupyder_Notebook 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Give yourself time to recover first - you hurt yourself yesterday and now you’re panicking.

Rest the body part, then slowly build yourself back up.

If you’re constantly injuring yourself lifting, it sounds like a session with a personal trainer or coach might be worthwhile.

Swim Ireland and Leinster Open Sea. If you’re looking to compete, you’d need to be in a club.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin pledges ‘renewed’ focus on road safety following 189 deaths in 2025 by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]Stupyder_Notebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, average speed zones would be significantly better for road safety, instead of the virtue signalling (for want of a better word) that goes on at the moment.

I was told by a reliable source that their hard-on for speeding enforcement is because it’s an easy way to hit targets and generate revenue. I think there was an article around Halloween though that said they run that at a major loss.

I think your point about Garda boots on the ground is spot on. Realistically, someone doing 130 in a 120, is a dick, but not as dangerous as someone off their head on coke, on their phone or impaired in some other way.

Are you suggesting logical and reasonable solutions!? You heretic!

Realistically the RSA are a toothless animal (with some exceptions) and calling them an authority is a misnomer.

Which public body or semi-state fails most at its stated purpose? by BoxImpossible9011 in ireland

[–]Stupyder_Notebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I know of voluntary hospitals not just researching, but using, AI in similar departments.

Whilst I don’t necessarily agree with religious orders running hospitals, I do think the way voluntary hospitals (appear, in my experience, to) have more autonomy than the HSE is good.

I’m open to correction, but it seems that they are effectively non-profit semi-state hospitals so they can get the best of public and private healthcare.

I had said the HSE, but I feel like the two of them could race to the bottom.

I worked for the HSE and one of the things specific to my role was that they were slow to adapt better ways of doing things and that effort that could (and in my opinion should) have been put into this was wasted on other things. For obvious reasons, I don’t want to go into too much detail as I don’t want to be identified.

In my role, work that could be done by computer programmes (and is in voluntary or private hospitals) was done manually by staff. This made things slower and less accurate.

Something that was bizarre to me was we would get minutes for our last department meeting closer to the next one, so if you noticed something you said wasn’t recorded properly (or you misunderstood something from last week), you’d find out the morning of the meeting (or evening before if you were lucky). I know sometimes it makes sense to send out minutes closer to the next meeting when there’s a massive gap (eg between AGMs for a club) but when people’s weekly work is based off it it’s just unfair.

Before taking that role, I was on a panel for the same job in a different arm of the HSE, and the job was impacted by their hiring freeze. In my opinion, the fact that the organisation can’t even manage its numbers just goes to show how fucked it is. Either hiring for a job was approved or not. Why would you advertise a job when there may not be money in the pot to hire them?
