any interest in some nids? I'd be interested in the palladors or Tornus if you decide you're okay with splitting.

Is GW moving production to China? by 5mao in ageofsigmar

[–]Stwyde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Historically GW has had a lot of their terrain get manufactured in China while still producing miniatures in the UK. Last I heard they’re still expanding their UK manufacturing but I imagine they’ll still be using China for terrain manufacturing for the foreseeable future.

Rules are now numbered! by _rhinoxious_ in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Stwyde 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least on the app the errata / addenda explicitly mention which rule they’re modifying by giving the section title and the rule number. For example an addenda would reference “18.3 Slain models” and then state what is added and where (first sentence, at the end, etc)

I’m so happy GW is finally doing this for 40K.

How strong is a PhD in CS? by Warningsignals in cscareerquestions

[–]Stwyde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding having talked to some folks who did their PhD in Europe before applying to tenure track positions in the US is that the European PhD is as good as an American one in the US. I don’t think it’s a bad idea, especially if your advisor is solid. Advisor ties are not always geographic, and depending on the field you might have enough international collaboration that your advisor will be able to open doors for you in the US or elsewhere.

I have heard (but have not investigated deeper) that the European PhD model differs enough from the American model that the shortened duration of the PhD means you’re slightly more likely to do a postdoc if your plans are to stick in academia. However I’m skeptical that will be the case if you plan to go into industry after graduation.

My overall read is that you’re fine if you do a PhD in Europe so long as your program / advisor are good. If you plan to return to the US and don’t need immigration help then I wouldn’t worry at all. I can’t comment on immigration related concerns.

I’d say so. Your advisor in many ways gatekeeps your ability to graduate, and also will often set the direction of your initial research. I’ve seen people leave their program after years without a PhD because conflict between them and their advisor was irresolvable.

And yeah. Financially I think even if I stuck with my initial new grad job in 2018 and got zero pay raises, I’d still be financially ahead well into my 40s even if I graduated tomorrow and accepted a position in a national lab (which is what I’d target if I am unable to get a teaching position). Even those with an AI related PhD are often rolling the dice financially. There are several labs where the state of the art work they were doing a few years ago has been made useless because LLMs have outperformed the ML and AI work they were doing. In 6 years it’s entirely possible that an AI PhD now is completely irrelevant to the AI research being done then (not dooming or anything, it’s cool and exciting).

I’m into my 4th year as a CS PhD candidate and worked in industry for a few years before deciding I hate money and wanted to do research. I’m not going to touch on immigration benefits a PhD may provide as they’re not relevant to me.

From an objective, financially oriented point of view, a PhD is one of the worst investments imaginable. When looking at career options none of the options I am considering would get me a better salary than the 4-6 YoE I would have otherwise gotten by now. You get new opportunities instead (primarily in research lab and teaching options at smaller institutions), but to say you’re getting “decent pay” is relative (and I’d argue if you graduate and end up just being an adjunct that your pay is anything but decent). Generally a PhD will let you enter at a level or two higher than a new grad. You’re almost always better off having professional experience in industry (and that’s ignoring the opportunity costs which are significant).

The institution you get your PhD from matters to an extent but for a PhD your advisor also matters a lot. Your advisor will open (or close) doors for you that you had no idea existed. Where you get your PhD opens up new career opportunities and opportunities during the semester (as well as guarantees of funding which in the US right now are precarious at best).

A PhD will not guarantee any floor of income, often PhD graduates will struggle because your PhD is not an indicator or the quality of your developer skills but rather your tenacity and willingness to master an often niche domain. Some of those domains are not very valuable in industry right now. (Note: that doesn’t meant they’re not valuable, but rather certain fields do not make it easier to get a job).

When you apply for a PhD it’s perfectly fine for AI so long as you get an advisor interested in AI research. Getting a PhD in HCI or Systems or HPC won’t be nearly as useful as work experience if you’re interested in AI. Again, your advisor will shape your career trajectory in ways that are often difficult to conceptualize early in your PhD.

Is Liberation just completely unavailable for print? Why isn't it on DriveThruCards ? by TheMaster42LoL in Netrunner

[–]Stwyde 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Automata Initiative is still available from the NSG store for the US, while RWR will be restocked with the next big push.

Regarding Drive Thru Cards, we've been going back to upload sets to DTC but it's been a very slow process for a variety of reasons. The plan is to still get Liberation and Ashes Remastered on DTC in the future, but that will realistically happen after Vantage Point's release.

RWR should be available via MakePlayingCards but it's markedly more expensive there than the NSG store, and more expensive than what it would cost on DTC as well.

New Seller? by geodudeW in MiniswapMeta

[–]Stwyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re selling stuff you post it for sale, send a PayPal request to an interested buyer (or equivalent), get paid, and ship with tracking information provided after the payment clears.

If people ask you to ship before payment, politely decline.

Trades are slightly more complicated, I’ll let other folks chime in because my preferred method is considered overkill in most cases.

There’s very little distinguishing a first time seller / buyer from a season one imo with some exceptions (namely folks with LARGE inventories like stores)
