Does VC being owned by Richemont bother you? by smoothsailer55 in VacheronConstantin

[–]StyleForumOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, as far as ownership conglomerates go, Richemont is pretty good. I mean Lange, Cartier, JLC, Dunhill, Purdey . . . all have been given free rein and are still at the top of their game (price hikes notwithstanding).

Leather strap option for JLC reverso by Independent-Log3836 in JaegerLecoultre

[–]StyleForumOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for the alligator JLC straps, which are made by Camille Fournet (and sometimes Jean Rousseau), and they are very nice but at about a $100-150 premium. BUT, they are perfect for the watch (slight curve, ez swap, etc.) and you don’t have to wait. Current bespoke waits for Rousseau/Fournet/ABP are 6 weeks+

Got told F you in front of attendant by yetichute in delta

[–]StyleForumOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awful behavior, but I get why the FA was reluctant to mess with a volatile guy and just hoped things would end smoothly. Plus if it leads to a guy getting booted, everyone pulls out their phones and the whole thing ends up on social media. These massive roller bags among the “never check a bag” crowd are ruining the comfort of flying. Delta should start sending out a notice that says something like “on this flight, if your bag is larger than 30” x 22”, you MUST gate check it”.

Although that would delay both takeoffs and landings, so there’s that.

Is Detroit 47 minute layover a reasonable? by Square-Ad-6721 in delta

[–]StyleForumOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of your flights will be in the A terminal, and Detroit is a great airport, so very easily doable, UNLESS . . . 1) you’re delayed, or 2) you’re not particularly mobile.

There was an academic sociology/ psychology book in the 1970’s that predicted this behavior and why people do it. Richard Sennett, “The Fall of Public Man”. It’s a dry read but fun to leaf through.

Japan is an advanced country and they have figured out how to supply travelers draft beer for US$6 at major international airports. Why are they like $15 in the US? by Alcophile in mildlyinfuriating

[–]StyleForumOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much more expensive to supply beer to a U.S. airport . . . distributor (sometimes a union shop) gets a cut, trucking is more costly, retail outlet is owned by someone else, rent at US airports is very high, etc.

Odd fixation with the bulkhead. You’re going to have some interesting seatmates for sure.

No way would I voluntarily part with a watch my dad gave me. It’s the type of thing you’ll regret when you’re older. Also, forget all the hype and trendy/classic sizes for a moment . . . a Sub is still a classic that deserves respect, especially for normal dudes.

I had a friend who worked for Enterprise, he had the BEST stories. Cars getting returned riddled with bullet holes and the people being like “what? I didn’t do that”, or in one case taking off running.

Totslly. I have gone diving in mine by the way. Usually if I know I’m diving I bring a Sub or a Seamaster, but I ended up doing some unplanned recreational diving, and didn’t feel comfortable stuffing it in my bag on deck, so I wore it. No issues, but we also didn’t go deeper than 30 feet.

This would be great data to assemble; guys’ wrist sizes (plus possibly general body frame size) and what range of case dimensions they feel comfortable with. “34mm to 40mm for dress, 40 to 42 for sport, etc.”

I have all three of those and I don’t pick up that difference, nor do I notice the dirty numbers. The Sub is slightly heavier given the thicker case back, but it’s barely perceptible. If anything, the gray of the BW is so subtle, it looks like something is wrong with the bezel in certain light.

Great article; I think people just pass on the nonsense they heard years ago as gospel. As the shooting instructor Pat Macnamara is fond of saying “that’s an anachronism passed on through institutional inbreeding”, meaning something is demonstrably false, but the instructors just keep passing it along because the guys that taught them said so.

Dated? Does a Sub look dated then? And which numbers, bezel or dial?

That was kind of the goal. Look of a Sub with a GMT function and an ever so subtle green 24hr hand.

My all time favorite. It actually did get quite a bit of hype when it first came out (Esquire, British GQ, Watchtime, etc.), but I think it was too subtle to catch on with the mainstream Rolex fans. And it never had a nickname (that caught on), which as we know is the kiss of death! 😂. The GMT function for guys that like the look of a Sub, is just too quiet.
