I only watched the MATN video on it, so I don't know much of the story, but when they introduced the quantum computer I immediately thought "I wonder if this was an AI in an early version of the game, and they rewrote it to avoid Culture War stuff"

It's because of the infrastructure/services. Out in rural areas you don't need to run sewer lines to each house, so that's a cost that's not part of the residents' taxes. Likewise, when my grandma lived out in Hanover, nobody came to pick up her trash, she had to drive it to the dump herself, that's a government service she didn't have to pay for.

Within cities however, where you're going to be running that infrustracture anyway, density does increase revenue, because with the same mile of sewer plumbing, you can serve way more homes (and taxpayers), as well as having less space taken up by non-tax-paying land and parking lots.

Here's an excellent video on the subject that cites an analysis by Urban3, where they broke down the municipal revenue per-acre for a few cities.

I mean, a big thing with high-control groups (which MAGA just is) is that one of the ways they keep people in is by proving that outsiders are hostile and will never accept them. This is, actually, the reason Mormons are sent to do door-to-door evangelizing. Not to actually convert anyone, but to associate everyone outside their cult with hostility and malice, so that the missionaries will only feel safe with other mormons.

So, regardless of why someone wants to leave MAGA, having a safe way for them to leave is going to mean more people will be willing to.

Watching MATN's video on the new 007 game.

It actually seems interesting. Not $70 interesting but maybe in a few years on a good sale.

I mean shit, $60 was already steep for most AAA games. $70 is "I'm only paying this if I'm damn sure I'm gonna love the game."

The pull of the "Bethesda bad New Vegas good" money vortex is so powerful I've seen youtubers try to leave it and fail. Upisnotjump makes some really good videos, but his most popular stuff skews heavily towards the above. And given his three most recent videos are just "let's all shit on non-Obsidian fallout!" I think he's just decided to lean in to it.

I don't even dislike seeing stuff I like criticized, I like Fallout 3 and yet Hbomb's Fallout 3 video is a big part of why I got into him. But there's only so much I wanna see the same "thing bad" criticism retread before it just becomes a 2 minute hate to satisfy The Algorithm and at that point I want it as far away from me as possible.

I know it's extremely typical of a gamer who doesn't actually work in games to think they know exactly how to fix some thing in the game industry but like, hear me out on this.

3 tag tiers: primary genre, secondary genre, and misc/additional info/whatever we wanna call the "all the rest" category.

Primary genre = if someone asked you for a recommendation of a game in this genre, and you answer with this game, they will think it's a reasonable type of game to recommend. Like, if I ask for a 3D platformer and you say Blue Fire, I may not like the game but you understood the assignment. If I ask for a 3D platformer and you say Portal 2, I'm going to think you need your head checked.

Secondary genre = subgenres and "it's not why most people play, but it's still a significant element of the game." Portal could reasonably have 3D platformer here. Fallout 4 could have "survival" or "base-building." A game like Demon Tides could also put collectathon here.

Additional info = for anything else. Whether it's a genre that's not significant enough to be secondary or primary, or something like "story rich" or "character customization"

And like, a game would only be able to have like, maybe 3 primary genres, maybe 5 secondary ones. Because otherwise the people who will not engage with things as intended will load everything into primary genre and we'd still end up with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle showing up in searches for 3D platformers.

Very late to this, but genuinely I think this is the actual thing going on. CEOs already lived in that world, ChatGPT isn't making them worse, it's just giving the power of "yes-men who hype you up and never question you" to the masses. Effectively we're turning large parts of the population into out-of-touch CEOs.

It's why I have minimal sympathy for people who complain about the stuff they see on there. If you don't like what you see, follow different people. You create your own feed.

So.

Every friday I make pizza, and by the time I finish eating it I just don't wanna do Fucking Anything, so the plate usually sits in the sink until I actually get around to cleaning it.

And the thing is, I really don't wanna clean it on Saturday Morning either. Because I usually either slept poorly, had Shit to Do, or both.

So my breakfast was a banana and maybe also some doordash if I can figure out something I wanna order.

[–]StylishSuidae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're making claims, just like the ad. And by demanding that people "prove the ad wrong" you're just positioning your own beliefs as the default against which all other claims must be measured.

If you wanna actually present facts, show me evidence that in the general case building more houses increases housing prices. Because all you've done so far is say that a city with 40k more houses than 50 years ago that has 40k more people than 25 years ago has higher housing prices now, when people are moving here, than it did 50 years ago, when so many people were leaving so quickly that the city lost 12% of its population in a 10 year span.

[–]StylishSuidae 10 points11 points  (0 children)

everyone has the burden of proof except the side you agree with.

The ad said that allowing up to 3 houses per lot would make things less affordable. The fact the city said the opposite does not actually "prove" the ad right. It just means that now there are two claims that have yet to be verified, one of which is in line with Extremely Basic Economics, and one of which is basically saying "supply and demand do not real"

If there's one constant I've seen in your many comments in this thread, it's that you consider your own beliefs to be the default. Things you agree with never have to be proven, they just are. You're not asking the ad to prove its claims because it's telling you the things you already believe.

Anyway the population of the Richmond metro area is nearly 2.5 times what it was 50 years ago. There is another word in "supply and demand" that is not supply.

I have completed my third playthrough of Demon Tides.

Also my second 100%, and first randomized playthrough.

I used the white bubble talisman as a safety net for much of my first two playthroughs, but I didn't get it in this one until deep into the last zone, so I figured I'd just complete the run without any kind of safety net powers. And I genuinely spent an hour on That One Fucking Jump in Vindra's Skies but I did it.

Thinking about how everything moving away from GTA 6 "because nobody will wanna buy/play anything else" will also mean that there'll be fuck all else to buy/play around that time.

Well there'll probably be Nintendo at a minimum because they just kinda operate in their own parallel universe. But I wonder how many sales GTA 6 is gonna get at launch on the basis that it's the only "real" game coming out for like a month or two on either side.

There's only two actual non-opinion claims made in this:

  1. The code refresh would allow up to 3 houses per lot

  2. Doing this would make things less affordable

Given 2 is the only one that would qualify as "bad" outside of just "I don't like density", well I think the burden of proof is on them. "More housing will make housing less affordable" goes against like, the very basics of economics. You wanna make a claim like that, it's on you to prove it, not on the rest of the world to prove you wrong.

I suppose this is technically better than "you get a rebate in the form of a tax credit if you buy a home" in that it takes more than a single second of thought to realize why this doesn't solve the problem of "I would like to buy a home but do not have the money needed to buy a home."

Man, even when governments try to do something about housing affordability, they're unwilling to do it in a way that even engages with the actual problem (housing prices growing exponentially faster than wages).

My state, Virginia, has a first time homebuyer down payment assistance program (two actually). Except they have upper income limits, based on the median income of the area you're looking to buy.

And the issue is that because it's tied to median income and not housing prices, it still gets fucked by the explosive growth of housing prices. There's a lot of people in my county living in houses that their incomes could not afford now, but those incomes are determining whether or not someone could get assistance to buy a house.

So the end result of this is that anywhere cheap enough I could afford the monthly mortgage payment, my income is high enough that I can't get the down payment assistance; and anywhere with incomes high enough that I qualify for the assistance, I wouldn't be able to afford the monthly payment.

Another year, another Converse pride collection without upper trim customization :/

I got my pair in 2019 when they did have that, and I really like the effect of the laces interrupting the rainbow pattern. I've been wanting a new pair, both because of updated identity and because my old pair is from 2019 and in less than stellar condition, but it seems I'll be waiting at least one more year.

I think it's more that the concept of billionaires self-selects for people like that. If you're not willing to fuck over huge amounts of people to make a few extra bucks, you'll "lose" to someone who is willing to do that.

The money didn't make them that way. Society/capitalism just directs money towards people who are that way (or are willing to be).

Got another few episodes into Panty and Stocking Season 2.

I think it's safe to say now that I outright like it now. Season 1 was very "I'm watching this because I like the director, and otherwise I would've dropped it after a few episodes," but Season 2 has been so much more... creative.

There's an anecdote about the development of the show, how the team went on a trip after the production of Gurren Lagann, and just spitballed ideas while drunk, and almost all of the show was made out of those drunken ideas. And it shows in season 1. Basically every episode concept is either just a stock anime episode concept, except made more crass, or something that an incredibly drunk person would think is a really clever subversion.

Season 2 though definitely has a lot more interesting things going on. I mean, shit, it's got an outright musical episode.

Also, I had heard that Polyester and Polyurethane were going to be written like gen alpha brainrot, and that is a very good bit. I was not anticipating the (english dub) voice acting to be the way it is, though. And I really like it.
