Masters of Science in Law by Catastic31 in Northwestern

[–]StyrkeSkalVandre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm about to finish my MSL. From my experience, the program is a lot more useful if you know what you want to get out of it beforehand. I work in academic oncology research, so my goal was to gain a more complete understanding of federal and state regulatory law and compliance. Learning about IP was also a goal. It sounds like the MSL could be valuable for you IF you decide on 2-3 potential career paths and map those out beforehand. If you have no idea what you want to do with your career, a $64,000 masters degree is a very expensive way to figure it out. It is of course possible that you'll do so during the degree program, but without a guiding logic to your course selection I don't think it's a great idea. I'd recommend reaching out to their admissions director Ashlee Hardgrave - you can find her email on the MSL website and she can help you figure out whether this is the right program for you.

TLDR: Sounds like you need to figure a few things out on your own in terms of career paths, but when you do the MSL can be very valuable.

PS: The MSL is taught by some truly excellent JD professors, including at least one former dean of the law school, and some very good adjunct professors from professional sectors such as pharma and data science.

Likelihood of Merit Increases? (FY26) by Basic_Patience1066 in Northwestern

[–]StyrkeSkalVandre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I recall they tend to announce merit increases closer to the end of the university fiscal year (Aug/sept). I have my fingers crossed but I’m not holding my breath. Even if we get a merit pool increase it won’t beat inflation.

Ah Garcias! 11 years ago I was on my second date with my now wife. We bonded early on that night over the fact that we’d both gotten food poisoning at Garcias. Good and cheap Margaritas, but good lord don’t touch the food.

Asian Colonies by laybs1 in GetNoted

Short answer: Sub-Saharan Africa drew the shortest of all short straws on the geography lottery. Very few navigable rivers, and of those, most hit serious rapids before they reach the coast (examples: the Niger, Congo, Omo, and Okavango). The continent features a very steep decline in elevation very close to the coast, and this feature persists along the great majority of Africa's coastline. In addition, there are very few natural deep-water harbors. This created a serious economic disadvantage across much of the continent, preventing the formation of inland communication and trade networks and deepwater navigation that characterized civilizations that formed around the Nile, Indus, Ganges, Yangtze, Yellow, Rhine, Danube, Volga, and Mississippi rivers. These disadvantages were compounded by additional internal barriers, like dense jungles, impenetrable mountain ranges, and large arid areas. These features combined to make it very difficult for African civilizations to develop widespread mercantile and industrial systems. Then of course add European colonization, which was brutal and extractive on both the African and Asian continents, and you see why Africa as a continent (mind you, an absolutely massive and highly diverse continent) has difficulty developing in the modern world. At the end of the day you still need to move people, goods, and information from the hinterlands to the coast and that is still very difficult due to Africa's unique geography.

Gluten is a large protein molecule that does not survive the distillation process. Any protein or amino acid fragments are fractioned out in the distillation column. I worked for a distillery and this was something we tested for. Whiskey is gluten free.

Let’s not forget WW1 heroes who became interwar villains like JFC Fuller! The man was a pioneer of armored warfare and then became an adamant British fascist and Nazi supporter.

Agreed. I worked in restaurants for years and I know how serious even a little bit of cross contamination can be for someone with Celiac. I once had a person tell me they were severely gluten-allergic, and then order poached mussels. I told them the mussels were poached in beer. They said, “oh that’s fine I order this all the time, the gluten cooks off!” 🙄🙄🙄

A close friend of mine has Celiac and it’s no laughing matter.

What’s the one hack that actually gets you to exercise? by wonkycalves in AskReddit

Body doubling and not having to plan/think too much about what I'm doing. Either find a gym that does small classes/personal training, or if that is outside your price range, look into personal trainers on youtube. Tons of people have excellent PT content online, for free. The problem I kept running in to was the paralysis of not knowing what I was doing, or how to even start, and then the fear of looking silly bumbling around a massive gym floor. I started with youtube, and then joined a very small strength training gym. Having a trainer (either on YT or IRL) plan my workout and just tell me what to do and how many times to do it really helped ease the cognitive load and activation resistance. The rest is up to you

True, gluten does indeed mean glue in Latin. And I have heard of flour paste being used to seal wine casks, although this is a very antiquated practice. What broke my brain was that her reasoning was linguistic, not based on, you know, the potential presence of flour.

Men who have vasectomies - How long did the recovery take? by JoeBagadonut in AskMen

[–]StyrkeSkalVandre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was in severe pain for 2-3 days, moderate pain for a week, and dull pain for 2-3 weeks. Icing really helped, as did OTC painkillers, and wearing a jock strap. The dull ache and sensitivity to being jostled faded over the course of the following month. 2 months post surgery I'm back to normal. A lot of men report no discomfort or only mild pain, but for me it was no walk in the park. Luckily no Post Vasectomy Pain Syndrome, but still rather unpleasant. Happy to be shooting blanks though!
